AK acted in small roles in Hamare Tumhare (1979), Ek baar kaho (1980) & Shakti (1982) and lead roles in regional films (parallel cinema) Vamsa Vruksham (1980) & Mani Ratnam's Pallavi Anupallavi (1983) before becoming a full-fledged Hindi film hero in Woh Saat Din (1983). Then there was no looking back - he signed big banner movies like Yash Chopra's Mashaal, Subhash Ghai's Meri Jung & Karma, Raj Sippy's Andar Bahar, Gulshan Rai's Yudh, Anil Ganguly's Saheb & Feroz Khan's Jaanbaaz where he also had meaty roles. Commercial success and critical acclaim followed. Well-deserved.
