      Red and black, or red and small amount of ultramarine. This makes a chocolate brown. You can also use orange instead of the red, but it makes a lighter brown.

    Outstanding tutorial. I have 2 small 1/25 scale figures to paint with (enamel) flesh tone and medium dark brown hair, as well as a small cardboard box to paint but have no browns in my paint set. I wondered if I could mix a few browns using other colors without it looking like a cheap substitute. This video shows how easy it is to make an entire range of browns using primary colors and a few others. Now I don't have to go out and buy 6 shades of brown, I can just mix my own. Much thanks.

    Since when has black been a primary colour? I thought the black was made from yellow, blue and red, the real primary colours. If we are to consider black as a primary colour, then all secondary and tertiary colours must also become primary colours by that definition.

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have a time stamp of the point where I say black is a primary color? I remember demonstrating how I mix brown from primary colors- both the traditional primary colors of red, yellow, and blue. I also mix it from phthalo blue, magenta, and yellow.

    Which acrylic red, blue and yellow colours should I choose to make burnt sienna and other shades of brown you demonstrated in the video

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blue is easy: you can't go wrong with phthalo blue and ultramarine blue. I use Pyrrole Red but cadmium red is similar. If you've seen my other videos, you would know that I think magenta is the real primary color instead of red- so I also add Quinacridone Magenta to my palette. I used to use Hansa Yellow a lot but Golden discontinued it. Cadmium yellow would work too. Keep in mind that you don't need the exact same colors that I used in the video as there are other pigments that would work too. For convenience, you can also start with a brown like Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber and then adjust it to your liking.

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure which pigments are in crimson red, but I some brands of Alizarin Crimson contain mostly quinacridone magenta so that may be why you're getting purple. My video about mixing pink covers some of the different pigments that brands use for alizarin crimson etc.

    How about mixing red, yellow, and black?

    • @ChrisBreier

      I think that would work because that’s basically orange and black. I’d mix the orange first, then add in small amounts of black.

  • @preethishritpv6361
    @preethishritpv6361 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for making this video. I'm trying to paint a violin and trying to achieve the right color blend to get the violin brown/red color. Do you have suggestions?

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Finished wood is a complicated color because the stains are transparent and it allows the wood grain to show through. So if you use opaque paint to touch up an area it will probably be noticeable. But if you’re painting the entire violin a solid color, I would just choose a brown that you prefer. Brown is basically a dark red or orange. One of my favorite ways to mix brown is to add a small amount of ultramarine blue to red. Also, if you do paint the entire violin, I’m wondering if that would affect the sound quality.

    • @preethishritpv6361
      @preethishritpv6361 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisBreier Thank you. Yes, it's not an easy color to achieve. Like you mentioned, I'm planning to add multiple layers of different tones of brown to get the texture. I'm painting a violin on canvas, not the actual violin.

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oops, I took that literally 😂 It sounds like you have a plan. As for the brown color, you could start with something like burnt sienna and modify it to your liking. That makes things a little simpler if you have to remix more of the same color later. Good luck!

    Hi, can you show different skin tones with acrylic colors for indian portrait work?
    Which brand brushes are best for portrait work.
    Is oil or acrylic better for portrait work?
    Which canvases are better for portrait work granular or smooth?

    • @ChrisBreier
      @ChrisBreier  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I plan doing some videos about these topics. The oil/acrylic debate is somewhat of a personal preference though. There are “portrait canvases” which are smoother than regular canvases.A lot of these questions depend upon your painting style. For example, realistic portraits may be easier to achieve with oils on a smooth canvas. The downside is the solvents aren’t fun to work with. If this is a problem for you there are water mixable oils and slow drying acrylics. I would say start with the materials that appeal to you and make adjustments as you gain experience. I hope this helps!

    How would you mix a mid tone golden brown color that's vibrant?

      Golden brown makes me think that starting with orange might work. Add a small amount of blue to make it turn brown.

    3:16 the exact moment where I realised my printer wasn't actually shitting me when complaining it ran out of cyan to print an image without any blue in it 😬
