    I imagine the baton shop to be a little like mr Garrick Ollivander’s store at Diagon Alley. The conductor does not choose the baton. The baton chooses the conductor.

      From the short time I conducted a wind band buying the baton was exactly as you say like buying a wand as it needs to be the right weight and style. You can try conducting with it in the shop before you buy. Mine has a wood rather than cork base.

    We all know one can go a really long way with piano, but it DOES give me pause that he was conducting his, presumably small, comedy orchestra before any conducting training. Had he been in choirs and orchestras as a pianist before? That would certainly help. It's kind of incredible that a fair group of musicians were like "Oh, sure -- we'll play in your comedy show and whatever you think'll work for conducting, if you're accomplished in piano, we can make it work." That process of building on whatever learning of conducting he already had would be its own comedy gold.

    I regretly just had notice about you some months ago but I really admire your work A LOT. I'm a conductor myself and always have tried to do some funny stuff on my concerts because I strongly believe concerts are more than just music and the audience DESERVE to enjoy a show that makes them happy. You're one of my main role models now and if you open a school of conducting and entertaining I'll be the first in line to be there.
    Also, I'll try my best to do the spanish captions of your videos because I want to show your videos to my students. Thank you very much, maestro.

    • @RainerHerschYouTube
      @RainerHerschYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comments. If I have given you inspiration, that is great. But, haha - a school of conducting and entertaining would have VERY few students, I'm afraid.
      If you are interested in providing Spanish captions to some of the videos, that would be great. It takes us toooooo long to get it right but we would love to reach out more to Spanish-speaking audiences. Feel free to contact me through the www.rainerhersch.com - the 'book Rainer' form.

    So nice you are open to peoples questions. Cant wait to see if you do another Q&A If I knew you were going to do one I would have asked 2 questions. 1 : where do you draw you comedy ideas from. And 2 : who are your favorite comedic musicians.

    • @RainerHerschYouTube
      @RainerHerschYouTube  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Comedy ideas come from just thinking about classical music and the craziness of it, in some ways: concert etiquette, how classical music is used and referred to, famous pieces and things I would like to see happen in them. Favourite comedic musicians: probably Victor Borge (who was a good pianist AND a a natural clown).

    Here is an off the wall idea, from someone who would not know a quaver from a quiver, but if I am right, it might be funny. Take two musical notes, beep and bop. it does not matter whether you play them that way round or as bop beep, they sound OK. Extending this, you might come to the conclusion that, because many notes sound good going forward, they might also sound good going backwards. In other words, instead of starting with God save the Queen and going on to the last line, forward, you start at the other end of the verse and play ''Queen the save Go'' and go backwards to the beginning. I have no idea what this would do, but it might be fun to try!

    I was interested in your comment about becoming tired when conducting, Maestro so my question is "Would you think a ball and socket on the end of your baton rather than a piece of cork would be helpful, particularly in fast pieces such as The William Tell Overture? If it was a long one - which I think Sir Adrian Boult favoured - maybe you could even reach a member of your orchestra who was not playing to your satisfaction and give the a tweak!
    Blessings and peace sir.

    I just can't wait until the pandemic is over and I can conduct my orchestra again. I was a late bloomer in a sense. Didn't get the chance to conduct an orchestra until my 40"th and my orchestras former conductor sadly passed away. Yes I was actually meant to play the tuba. I play trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, piano, accordion, guitar, drums and more. So it's kinda a multi musician. Lol
