    We had the same system fitted to our Swift Elegance 645 in 2017 after I had owned the caravan for twelve months. The reasons for putting the E&P system on our caravan were the same as you, however due to deterioration in my health we sold the caravan a year later. £3,500 was spent, and £3,500 was lost as we didn't get a penny more for the van whether it had the system on or not. I have to admit that the system was fantastic, like you, the caravan was incredibly stable, no bouncing while you walk the length of the caravan, it was absolutely rock solid. As for the ease of pitching on site, I pressed a button on the remote and while the van was doing all of the levelling, I set up the water and started to connect the electrics, it was incredible, it also caused a bit of a stir on the campsite! My health has improved following an operation, and so we're back caravanning again, but I won't be having the E&P system fitted, I'll save my £3,500 and put up with the bounce! Enjoy your amazing caravan, and have fun.

    Graham it made me smile, you were worried about waking the neighbours up with the motor movers, etc, the drill on the legs makes a good attempt and comes in a close second!

    Hi Graham.
    We took delivery of our new Coachman in July with the E&P system with jacks fitted as standard. Worked great the times we were away last year.
    2 weeks ago I raised the legs with the remote no problem off the 7.5° drive and took the caravan to the dealer to get some warranty work done. Collected the caravan last Saturday and drove nearly 2 hours to a site in the Scottish Borders...unhitched the car , lowered the nose with the jockey wheel , got the E+P remote out to start the self leveliing and both Auto and Manual buttons were greyed out. Tried re-pairing the remote to the main unit and it wont re-pair. Pressing the emergency retract button under the front seats and no noise at all from the hydraulics. Checked the 30A fuse supplying power to the main hydraulic unit and its good. Had to hitch the car to the caravan to use the back area of the caravan a few times followed by a 30 mile round trip to a DIY store to get some logs and an 8' plank of wood to pack under the rear legs to get the caravan "levellish" as it was too low for axle stands. Taking it back to the dealer on way home tomorrow to leave it with them to sort it. They reckon there is a 9 pin plug under the caravan that I cant get to which needs pulling out and reconnected while trying to pair the remote.
    On the plus side the Tweed Valley along the A7 from Jedburgh/Hawick to Peebles is absolutely stunning.

    Hi Graham.
    Thoroughly enjoyed this VLOG.
    We had the full E&P system with the upgraded feet fitted with the money we saved by not being able to go abroad for two years during the pandemic. It can be a bit temperamental on uneven pitches but absolutely love it and wouldn’t go back to blocks of wood or an airbag. I was told by the E&P installer that the system adds around 28kg to the weight of the caravan in total. That figure includes the difference between the manual corner steadies that are removed and the new heavy duty E&P ones. When in storage, I manually set the front and rear legs so the nose is down which allows rain water to run off. The first couple of times I used Auto which levelled the caravan and I subsequently got a bit of a soaking from a pool of water sitting on the roof when I raised the hydraulic struts and corner steadies.
    The foam blocks you refer to are called Enigrun ProBlocks. I have two sets and they are brilliant. They do exactly as described and weigh very little. I used them last year with the E&P on a very uneven pitch in France and there was no wobble at all over the three week holiday. I did contact the manufacturer about custom sizes but they only do the ones advertised. My payload is significantly less than yours at 155kg and I didn’t know that the leisure battery isn’t included in a caravan’s MRO and has to be deducted from the MTPLM. So, I have to carefully watch what my Wife puts onboard😂
    Something I have done recently is to remove the dreadful AlKo spare wheel carrier from under the caravan. If you haven’t tried getting the spare off yet, I suggest you try it at your leisure on your drive. It’s a horrible job and I would never have wanted to do it at the side of the road. I carry my spare wheel in the car now which saves me 24kg in weight. It lives under the bed on site and in storage.
    Have fun.
    Regards,
    Steve

    When levelling manually put the centre rams down first. Then do the fronts to level fore and aft. Lastly the rears to stabilise. It’s how E&P recommend to stop you twisting the chassis.

    I had this system installed on a coachman laser 620 2023 model. I have a back injury and retired early. It certainly helps me also using centre jack for fitting the alco wheel locks. Locks fitted and level in a few minutes. Yes expensive, however it helps the old back.

    About time Graham , weight wise there not much difference
    The only thing I do with my E&P is leave it up when I not using the caravan, especially winter.
    You tend to get a lot of crap sticking to the rams.
    They have a scraper on the piston to remove this but it can only do so much. Just had no issues with my system by doing this preventing seals leaking over time.

      I prefer down as centre rams is a security feature. I have a can of silicone spray (on advice from E&P) which i spray on rams on about 3 monthly cycle. No problems after 4 years and it reduces some of the grunts and groans when it closes up.

    I like to store my motorhome with the wheels completely off the ground which stops anyone towing it away without the controller, more relevant if you store on a storage site. Good video Graham. Love the e&p on our Buccanner it’s also great for fitting Al-Ko wheel locks as you raise the one side of ground to fit the twin locks easy. Must do this 1st thing when arriving on site. But make sure you use chocks on the other side as when you take handbrake off to turn wheels it could roll. When you then auto up before auto levelling the caravan the wheels will rotate as the wheels turn with the suspension struts retracting. It scared me to death the 1st time this happened. At home I always use manual as prefer to have the front low down for water to run off then just lower rams and rear steadies to touch the ground. Always carry blocks too as I’ve been on 1 site last year in France and rear steady was at maximin point and still didn’t touch ground so had to use blocks. You will find it great. Happy Caravanning

    My sentiments exactly, E&P justified by me not getting any younger so like your good self, future proofing. As you say, not for everyone. I don’t have a slope issue at home but leave the centre rams up so they don’t corrode and manually drop the four legs to leave the van nose high to prevent standing water on the roof. Not ideal if you sit in it regularly though.
    Always thought a facility to switch on the road lights when not attached to your car would be a good thing. You have a 12v supply so shouldn’t be too difficult. Indicators for hazard lights if nothing else.

    Evening Graham, the video was both entertaining and enjoyable. My new van arriving next month has E&P as standard and I wanted it for both future proofing as I age and perhaps slow down and because I want my life to be as easy as I can afford to make it.
    Not sure why you are reluctant to go to weight bridge you are clearly not tight? My new van will travel with approx 2100 Kgs ( so I still have an extra 125 Kgs to play with if needed). I wanted to see how heavy my car weighed compared to the What Car 2560 Kg stated weight. The weight bridge said my car was 2920Kgs meaning I am travelling about 72%, so well within the so called safety margin.
    Why my obsession with weight? 18 years ago I had a severe snake on the motorway and lost control fortunately coming out of it unscathed apart from needing clean under ware. I am also keen to avoid the boys in blue. So by travelling with the knowledge that I am both legal and erring on the side of caution make me feel less stressed.
    Keep up the Vlogs.

    Hi Graham I just about put my foot in it by saying i though you were not supposed to use the corner steadies for lifting the van but at the end you said you were given the old ones back . I actually thought the system was aĺ like your centre supports and the system was actually mounted on the Alko Chassis didn't think the van floor was designed for that kind of use.👍👍

    • @CaravanVlogger
      @CaravanVlogger  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree; you're not meant to level the caravan using traditional legs. The legs are mounted to brackets that are fixed to the floor; they are large brackets which can obviously withstand the pressure of the leg lifting the caravan. But the centre rams are fixed to the chassis. The system does life the front and back of the caravan using the legs...
      I have read through the manual a couple of times and nowhere does it say don't lift the caravan using the legs. I think the legs move as a pair; I assume that's to stop the chassis twisting. Still, a lot to learn; I'm being extra careful in manual mode.

    I thought about E&P when buying our new van 10 months ago (a Swift Icon Trend 560 which is a dealer special centre bathroom fixed bed from Kimberley Caravans - which with all its additions is probably somewhere between a Challenger and a Conqueror). I thought you'd have to go to the E&P people to have it installed rather than going to your "local" dealer. Was I wrong about that?

    Hi Graham. I agree, its E&P for me. Haven’t had opportunity to use our van since installation but have payed at home. Be aware that if you use a motor mover (Quad) to get parked up and then level with E&P as i did when i got home every thing went pear shaped. Only two movers disengaged and E&P stopped when i lifted the near side to fit the Alko locks. The reason - battery ran low. I had to hook up overnight and was able to reset in the morning, so now i know that it all drawers lots of power. My battery is 100 amps, 110 would be better.
    Now i like you but, like others, I am worried. I just looked at a 2023 650 Challenger which has an MRO of 1580 kg and MTPLM of 1740 which leaves you with a payload of 160. Te sae as my Crusader. Like you I upgraded the MTPLM which gives me only another 24 kg.
    Quad mover 60 kg, E&P 28kg. That leaves you with 72kg, less the A/C to load. Just don’t want you to get nicked.
    Keep up the good vlogging😊

      @@Andeecee hi. There is a button that allows you to retract the legs and rams but if the battery goes low due to lots of motor moving etc. then you can’t use it. Fortunately the van was in a convenient position to connect to power overnight. I suppose that with a higher rated battery you would be safer. I am thinking that I won’t stay anywhere that doesn’t have an EHU to keep the battery topped up.
      All said and done tho if I didn’t have movers and E&P I would probably not be able to caravan due to health issues. So I love both.

      My understanding and my only experience so far (only fitted two weeks ago) is that the override button allows everything to retract. At the time it ran out of power I was fitting the wheel locks so only one side was up. As it was dark I decided to connect the 240v power and come back in the morning at which point I used the override to lower the van and then operated as normal.
      I am not aware of any other way of retracting E&P.
      The quad movers which also ceased operating can be wound off but I would imagine even with a drill this might be time consuming. Again revisited in the morning and everything worked. Regards

    • @M..R....
      @M..R.... ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi
      I found when just raising one side to fit the left hand Alko lock (i fit one lock first on the ground and then the other using the ram to minimise time off the ground with the handbrake off) even when carefully raising the ram to lower the caravan the caravan pivots slightly when lowered to the ground meaning its very slightly off perpendicular to the drive. Using both left and right rams takes all wheels just off the ground so when the handbrake is released to allow you to rotate the wheel(s) needing the Alko(s) to be fitted means the caravan wont roll (remember the wheels are all off the ground I wouldnt rely on chocks to stop rolling on a sloping drive but with all wheels raised its not going to roll). Once the 2nd Alko is on I apply the handbrake and gently lower the caravan to the ground alternating inch by inch raising the RH and LH rams to lower the caravan and minimise / negate any twisting.
      Not sure why both rams cant be raised at the same time when lowering the caravan manually.

      Hi, thanks for watching. Yes, it’s working well for us, don’t regret buying it at all. 👍🏻 The one thing to be aware of it that the front needs to be lower when it starts to level otherwise it complains. But this is when the pitch is uneven front to back. As our car is high we do sometimes have to lower the front steadies and move the jockey wheel so that we can get the front low enough. I hope that makes sense, it’s no big deal but isn’t always as simple as just pressing the button..

      If the slope side to side or front to back is more than the steadies will extend you’d use blocks.

    Hi Graham, are you sure about the payload of your caravan? The figures I have seen for Challengers is 160kgs as standard with a 96kg upgrade possible which gives you a potential payload of 256kgs, not the 400+ kgs that you said. The dealer who fitted the E&P system to my Lunar Delta said that the nett weight penalty was 20kgs. I'm interested in your figures because I am thinking of fitting a four wheel drive motor mover to my van but understand that would eat into the payload by about 60kgs. So then I have a penalty of 80kgs plus the weight of the two 13kg propane gas bottles in the front I only have a 160kg payload so it would be getting a bit borderline. One other thing I have discovered is that it pays to leave the van attached to the towbar if you are lifting the nearside to attach the Alko locks. I found that the caravan can slew to the right when you lift the wheels on even a slightly sloping pitch. Chocking the offside wheels just makes a pivot point around which the van can rotate. Enjoy your vlogs, keep 'em coming!

    Hi Graham my second comment on this Vlog and it is about the number of negative comments regarding the value of the E&P system. How a person spends their post tax income is totally up to them as long as it is legal and not immoral. I detect some green eyes from your readers comments. The mickey taking I understand and find amusing as I am sure you do, but some comments seem totally out of spirit of your Vlog and are plain rude. I don't always agree with you but respect your right to be wrong without feeling the need to be rude. As I said earlier it is your money and up to you ( and your wife how you spend it).
    Personally I caravan not to save money but to have freedom to do as I like (without negatively inpacting others). I want luxury, comfort and convenience and am prepared to spend my cash to achieve this. I had my last van for 18 years and want 20 year from the Bessacarr. If I get that I will be 83 and do not want to be crawling on my knees winding the corner steadies either now or then. Its my money saved over 40 years of working and I wont be changing my approach because someone else has differing priorities.
    I feel better now that is off my chest . Enjoy the NEC and I am looking forward to the next Vlog.

      @CaravanVlogger  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. I agree. Normally, due to how I present the vlogs, there is usually an amount of banter, which I like and expect. On a few comments, I did sense an unpleasant undertone. But of course, it's hard to tell when reading. Sometimes it's down to my mood when I read them, and whether they're from regular contributors or a newcomer.
      Same here, we expect our set-up to last us out :-), but you never know what's around the corner.
      BTW you won't have to wait long for the next vlog; it's out this afternoon. I address some of the comments on the E&P vlog.
      Thanks again, Graham

    What is the point of auto leveling if it doesn't work on unlevel ground?

    • @CaravanVlogger
      @CaravanVlogger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does. The legs are only so long and there has to be some limitations on how steep a slope it can handle. It can’t defy the laws of physics 🤪
      The nose has to be lower than I can get it. The levelling system can’t lower the front as the jockey wheel would prevent it, it can only bring the front up ⬆️ Like I say it’s the law of physics. ( I learnt everything I know from reading Bill Bryson books 😄)

  • @edwardhouston8838

    HI Graham, Please to see you have the e&p fitted now. I had it fitted to my new elegance 835 at the factory last year and I have the same as you parking at home a big upwards slop. I find it a dream to use when on site and I am sure it will be the same for you. However, I am a little confused with the payload you say you have. What is the MTPLM of your Challenger ? The reason I am asking is my MTPLM is 1976 kg and I have an update plate to 2000 kg the maximum allowed and therefore I need to be very careful to not go over my payload.
    My last three caravans all new at purchase have been up plated and every time I was only able to round up the next 100 kg mark, ie Bailey 1530 kg to 1600 kg, Luna Delta 1760 to 1800 kg.

    • @CaravanVlogger
      @CaravanVlogger  ปีที่แล้ว

      The MRO is something like 1540kg, which is the weight when it comes off the factory line. I up plated to 2000kg. So that’s 460kg payload. The last caravan we had was a Bailey and the payload was 160kg 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @edwardhouston8838
      @edwardhouston8838 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is not making sense to me I do not know of any caravan on the market that has a payload of over 400kg even with a plate upgrade, If the MRO of you van is around the 1540kg then I would think that your payload without upgraded plate would be around an addition 200kg giving a MTPLM of around 1740kg If my figures are about right you have a up plate of over 200kg. I would have thought with a MTPLM of around 1740kg the maximum new MTPLM plate would be 1800kg. I generally think you have something wrong in your calculation and I not having a go at you but trying to assist and understand your calculations.

    I can't understand why anybody would spend over £3k or so on E&P levelling. I bought a Milanco side to side leveller for just over £100, a 1/2 inch drill drive to socket from screwfix for a couple of quid and a socket the right size, I already had, to drill drive the Milanco leveller. (If you have a double axle it is just over £200 for two). It now takes seconds to level, with the milanco leveller and the jockey wheel after the motor mover has placed the caravan on the pitch. I can now spend the £3k on more outings. E&P = waste of money in my opinion.
