  • Harlan on A. E. van Vogt and the absurdity of the SFWA's lifetime achievement award rules.
In 1995, the rules were changed, and in 1996, it was awarded to A. E. van Vogt.

Well, they must have listened to Harlan Ellison, because every writer whom he brought up got a grandmaster award, save for Robert Sheckley I believe. Right on, Harlan!

Half-Full Update: According to Wikipedia's link to the SFWA site, "The award was originally limited to six per decade and twelve were presented in the twenty years to 1994. From 1995 it has been conferred annually except in 2002." Eventually, they relented and did the right thing and even Harlan received an GM award in 2006! Sadly, Bob Sheckley died on December 9, 2005 at Age 77 but Kate Wilhelm is still alive at Age 85. The squeaky wheel got most of his grease at least! Way to go Harlan!

Update, Kate Wilhelm passed away in 2018, STILL with no SFWA Grand Master award for her. Here's hoping!

Having read 'Space Beagle' only recently,Grosvenor was clearly the template for 'Mr. Spock' from Star Trek and other analytical characters.Give him the award.

Not only that but Philip k dick took huge influence from AE Von vogt. So blade runner, minority report and many others wouldn't exist without Vogt. AE deserves more recognition without him sci fi would not be where it is today. I to my shame only discovered Von Gogt a while ago.

Today's SF writers stand on the shoulders of giants and their fans barely understand where the wealth of this genre has come from. A time when the exercise of imagination and wonder was considered perverse and childish, but which now fuels a multi-billion dollar a year industry that churns out so much crap that the rare treasures of the Masters are lost in a avalanche of dreck. Harlan performs a terrific service in this commentary and in his championing of work that challenges the imagination.

"Any rules that people make can be put aside. They're just words!!" What a quote to remember when one thinks how many times people don't do the right thing because of words.

Words that people write and live and die by. But yes they can be changed. Most of us write and will NEVER live as they.

Before Ellison was a Writer, he was a FAN, and it's what got him into writing in the first place.
Obviously, the most (professionally) honored SF Writer of All Time (at least up until the time of this piece) never stopped being a FAN.

although "slan" and "voyage of the space beagle" were excellent stories, do not forget that one of the greatest science fiction persons of all time described a.e.van vogt as a "pygmy using a giant typewriter." who was that person? why, damon knight himself!

Cameron admitted to someone that he "ripped off a bunch of Harlan Ellison short stories".
Ellison sued him and Cameron had to add him to the credits, which a decent guy would have done in the first place.

Ellison did write Demon With A Glass Hand (with Robert Culp) for The Outer Limits. Pretty decent episode (I think it was a two-parter) if you can catch it on a re-run channel. There are some interesting Burke's Law episodes too.
