Hanging Wick Planter

  • DIY Hanging Wick Planter
    I bought a pack of hydroponic wick cord the other day to set up a drip irrigation system for some of my houseplants. And then suddenly I had this idea for a new project. But before I could start working I had to test the wicking capability of the cord. So I dipped an end in water for about 15 minutes and found out that the cord did have good wicking properties. My reading came out as 25 cm in 15 minutes which is very good. The cord must be made of polyester which has good wicking properties. Cotton does not have good wicking and also it would not work out for my project as it would break down.
    So I proceeding to cut down the cord in small lengths based on the height of my jar and cable tied a bunch of them to prepare a sort of thick rope toi be used as the base of the wick planter. Next I wrapped this rope with Fissidens moss using regular polyester sewing thread. Then I proceeded to add some details using thin pieces of coconut tree roots. I also covered the exposed bottom with a tuft of aquatic Christmas moss. Next I added some epiphytic plants to it. I used Bucephalandra, Anubias and Peperomia prostrata for the planting.
    I used a suction cup holder to hang the planter from the lid of the jar. Finally I poured water in the jar and gently placed the lid with the planter hanging from it. The bottom of the planter was submerged in water and I am sure the wicking property of the cord will keep the planter hydrated at all times. The enclosed container will also ensure that the moisture is trapped to provide a humid environment for the moss and plants to thrive.
    Will this survive outside the enclosure? I think it will if the bottom of the wick planter is kept submerged and outside humidity is above 60-65%.

    Interesting project. Couple of things I have questions about. Instead of using zip ties (which look like they might restrict the flow of water) I think using cotton string, smaller diameter and use a cable tie method to group them without binding them with compression. (See the method used by electrical workers with cable bundling. th-cam.com/video/N6H7ZP5gJmg/w-d-xo.html)
    You did an amazing job of 'upholstering' with moss and decorating with plants and coconut roots, but I'm wondering if you let it curve, was that out of an intent to not have it symmetrically shaped (straight)? Last for other projects that wick water, you used a pebble base to 'hide' the wicking process instead of just putting them in water. (Your Wabi Kusa ball th-cam.com/video/kO0ewCAGGDg/w-d-xo.html) Why did you just use water? Thanks again for the project, I look forward to learning from your choices.

    • @TheUrbanNemophilist
      @TheUrbanNemophilist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. I wanted some rigidity to shape the planter so I used cable ties. Whether it is restricting the capillary action is something I need to wait and find out. There wasn’t much space at the bottom for gravel or pebbles. It would have looked nice but I like this plain and austere look as well. It will be easy on maintenance too.

    No springtails? It seems the wood will rot quite easily

      Thats why i used coco roots this time. They tend to do better in such environments. Lets find out in time. Springtails can always be added and any mold outbreak can be removed manually by brushing as wick planter is removable. However lets keep this fact in mind that any wood will breakdown over time inside a terrarium.

      Why not if it makes things more interesting. I however like to take things slow so that I can enjoy the beauty that lies in little things around me in my life.
