    Great video. The rain makes all the difference in the world out there, huh? Nice to see a current year video and some of the same names below in the comments. We are all after the same thing here and maybe it really is a small world. Hopefully I will get some video when I head out there the end of October. Nice dog work too.

      Thank you sir. Yes the rain can be key, spring rains create good grass and insects for nesting and brood rearing. Drought can be bad at any time for sure but if they get rain early a lot of times it seems the broods have a better chance to survive. Good luck out there in October, look forward to the video.

    I like the way you hunt your dogs. I'm actually very impressed on how much control you have over all three of them at the same time. I do things a little different than most bird hunters myself. It comes from growing up hound hunting. I've been wanting to do a bird hunting Montana for a long time. I have two concerns cactuses and snakes. Do you ever have a problem with either of these? There is rattlesnakes in some of the areas I hunt but I usually don't hunt there until there's an inch or better of snow on the ground.

    • @timwagenmanuplandadventure8270

      Ran into a lot of cactus in the first spot we were at, not so much in the other place though and thankfully no snakes! My neighbor has a pack of hounds and runs them on bears and mountain lions, I’m hoping to go with him once it looks like fun!

      @@ryanchandler7434 they did yes, I had to look over their paws after each hunt and pull any cactus pieces they may have got. Some areas are worse then others for cactus but it’s definitely out there.

    The draught has had a bad affect on Montanna birds!!! I spend 8 weeks out there every year. The numbers have been going down every year!!! Hopefully the draught will break.It was so hot this year,you had to start hunting at daybreak,then you could only go 2 hours before it was too hot for the dogs.

    • @timwagenmanuplandadventure8270
      @timwagenmanuplandadventure8270  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first place we started in was really drought stricken, I talked with a few locals and they said they hadn’t seen any birds in a few months. It was my first time out there so I didn’t really have anything dialed in yet, sure was glad I moved! The last day and a half in a different area was much better. And I agree, it was brutally hot!!! We were lucky to get 2-3 hours in the morning, with frequent water breaks for the dogs! Couldn’t even spend time in the tent it was so bad during the day and it was in the shade of some big trees. Spent most of the day in the AC in the truck. What a beautiful place to spend 8 weeks though Scott!! You must get into the pheasants then too? Saw a lot of pheasants that last day and a half!!

    I'm heading to ND to hunt sharp tails and huns for the first time. What size shot do you like to use on these birds?

    • @timwagenmanuplandadventure8270
      @timwagenmanuplandadventure8270  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, I use the Boss shorty as they call it, 2 3/4” #5, 12 gauge. Shots on sharpies can be close for sure but not always and the #5 has worked really well for me and I’ve yet to blow one up so to speak. I was in ND a couple weeks backs, bird numbers were pretty good, hope you have good luck!

      Jason I pick up every one. And I’m always picking up others too, I’ve done it and showed it in other videos and I believe I even did in this one. And I think it sucks to pick up other peoples hulls too. In ND I picked up plastic pop bottles, candy wrappers too. I hate seeing that stuff out there too.

      I wish I had a month off straight, I’m jealous! Whatever region your going to call ahead and get a hold of a biologist. Their very helpful if your going somewhere for the first time. Some areas are drought stricken pretty bad and it has affected bird numbers. Also check rainfall maps for the year. Some areas received rain in May thru July but not much since. But those were the nesting months so that’s a good thing. Those 2 areas are where I usually start when I’m going somewhere new. Good luck out there, wish I was going back!

    Tim you are making a huge mistake rewarding your pointer for flushing. They need to hold a point and you flush.

      @jackhutson9194 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amen, pfhunter! Everyone has their own tolerance level, but I commented to a few of my bird dog clients about how this technique of using shorthairs as flushers drives me a bit crazy. The issue is that there is competition going on amongst the dogs. Better to hunt the youngsters solo until they are staunch. To each, their own! Glad you're enjoying your dogs.

  • @shug2795
    @shug2795 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tim, you would have a LOT more success if you trained those dogs. Those dogs are not even remotely holding and you're rewarding them for it by shooting at the birds. It doesn't matter if you drop them or not. Just shooting at them is enough reward for your dogs. Now that you'd done that, getting them pointing is going to be a lot more work too. Have you considered getting a flusher? In this regard, when the dogs flush/bump, they would be within gun range.

    • @timwagenmanuplandadventure8270
      @timwagenmanuplandadventure8270  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like hunting them together and the fun that I have with them, their family, basically my 3 kids. I know most pointing dog owners want to shoot a perfectly pointed bird most of the time, and as the season goes on I get a lot more of that but for sure not always. I respect that too and appreciate the time I know that goes into that. I do work with them and have been researching training methods especially for retrieve and whoa. I just spent 2 days chasing very few prairie chickens in mn, we ran across a lot of pheasants I did not shoot at because it’s not open. Many of those birds were flushed at my feet by me. A lot of times they point and don’t bump the bird till I’m right there. I plan to hunt them solo more at times too to develop them more without the competition of other dogs adding pressure. I love the breed and the energy. In the end I do the videos for memories of them and me. To be able to relive the fun good times I had with them. A different approach for sure and I know many won’t watch because of that. That being said though, I do work with them but I’m not the trainer a NAVDHA guy or gal is but it doesn’t stop me from trying. I respect your opinion and also respect and appreciate the time I know goes into the way you and many others hunt. I definitely don’t set out to offend anyone so if I did my apologies sir. When I walk a field I’m walking that field with many loved ones I’ve lost that I hunted with, my dad, my brothers…..a lot of loss over the years….walking those fields is therapy for me and a way to walk with them all again as I relive the memories I made with them. I don’t ask for subscribers or likes, I try to make the videos the best I can and if people like them great. But in the end I’ll watch them to remember the dogs and the memories of the places we went. I love my dogs and have fun with them and for me that’s what it’s about. Memories and time shared with them. Thanks for the comment and I respect your opinion and also your approach.

      @@timwagenmanuplandadventure8270 Tim, we all start somewhere. None of us start as pros. That said, you're having fun and that's cool. The only reason I made the comment is because FAR too many bird doggers hunt their pointing dogs like flushers so I struggle with why they don't just get a flusher. A high quality pointing dog is a lot of work BUT the greater the investment, the greater the reward. I wild bird hunt a number of species across America. Regardless of species, my dogs have to perform as class pointing dogs - completely steady and retrieving. THAT is where I get my fun and not just in killing birds. That said, I started out just like you.

      @@shug2795 we all hunt for our own reasons I guess. Thank god we still have the opportunity to do so. I enjoy watching a guy that can do that with their dog like you are doing. I’ll either get their or I won’t as a trainer and I’m fine with that as there is a lot more to it then just that for me as I stated above. I do love eating wild game birds. Each of us have our own journeys and I respect yours. Sticking together as hunters is what we all need to do, United we stand divided we fall.

      @@timwagenmanuplandadventure8270 SO true! Understand this: The adventures before you are yet undefined and as such, you cannot rate them. As I "mature", I appreciate the dog work more than anything. Then it's my shooting skills which I also hold at high esteem. Finally it's the table fair which supports your respect for the birds you took from this earth. There is no "catch-and-release" in bird hunting. The least we can do is be careful to maintain a high level of conservation and ethics. This is where the future of hunting lies. NOT in how many limits we shoot.
