I remember my first year in college I wrote a postcard to their 4AD fan club and they sent me a big envelope with stickers, a poster, a photocopied hand written fan letter, and this song on a vinyl disc with Rupert the Bear on the b side. That was a great day.
Chris Acland was really Lush’s “secret weapon”. The songwriting was always good, the vocals and guitars were always good, but Chris’s drumming took it to another level. Particularly on this song and “Last Night”. He is dearly missed.
@Miracle Tire, I’ve never heard of anything has ever been released regarding his motives. Not to say that nothing has EVER been said…I’ve just never heard if it was.
Apparently he had just broken up with his girlfriend(not Miki), and had come off a long, exhausting tour with little success or wealth to show for it. Emma was also talking about leaving the group. To be in a great band and not be given the credit they deserved must have been tough!
Phil King's basslines are one of this band's secret weapons. I love it when he builds a guide tone line, out of the roots. It gives the chord progression a great lift ! Very musical !!
NB Emma wrote every part of her songs and demoed them on 4-track for the band (with drum machine and bass part included). The same instinctive genius approach to counterpoint can be heard in songs recorded back when Steve Rippon was the bass player: Deluxe, Breeze and so on. It’s all E. Anderson.
One of the greatest nights of my life was getting to see the reunited Lush live on their tour. After Chris died and Lush disbanded, I thought my chance was lost forever. I will always treasure that night. (Also, Tamaryn rocks. Lush could not have dreamed of a better opening act.)
Miki is so talented. It's a shame the band never really took off. We ought to have another half dozen Lush albums out there to enjoy (at least). Love their sound even today.
This is one of the last Lush songs that I "discovered" (after having listened to it dozens and dozens of times). It's intoxicating; wish it went on for 10 minutes more.
To think of how it ended still brings a little tear to the eye. I remember standing in the S.U. reading about Chris's suicide, disbelieving. I just stood there. The music lives forever with my memories of this fine band.
Lush was one of my favorite bands back when I was a rock musician and rock journalist. They were so refreshingly feminine, especially during a time when male grunge bands dominated the rock music scene.
"awful" grunge bands dominated the rock music scene. Sure, people liked them then...but now they look back and think "What that hell did I listen to that garbage for?" Grunge killed music for years. Luckily "alternative" rock like the Pumpkins and Radiohead were around when I wasn't listening to metal... I even turned to hip-hop when grunge garbage was getting crammed down our throats.
I have other reasons to hate grunge. For instance (I'm a metalhead at heart), one of my favorite bands of the era, Sanctuary, was pushed to turn to grunge by record execs...Two of the members liked the idea, and the other three members hated the idea. It ended up totally breaking the band up. This happened to more bands than just Sanctuary and "record execs" pushed what they thought was a money maker instead of letting artists release their own style of music. In this way, Grunge killed metal for almost a decade. Now I look back at the BIGGER grunge bands like Pearl Jam (who I never liked), and Nirvana and Alice and Chains, that either killed themselves with guns or drugs... You are a smart and open minded woman...Listen to Sanctuary's "Future Tense" from the late 1980's (if you will...), and just see what kind of band record execs wanted to turn to grunge, just because they hailed from Seattle. If you listen to that song, I'll then listen to any song/band from the era you'd like. I love Lush, but just discovered them recently. Now I want to buy their merchandise and grow my hair out like Miki's. Thanks for talking music from a "higher authority" of sorts. I could talk music forever, so I'll stop right now.
Awwww . . . . even all these years later, I'm *not* surprised at how much I still love and miss this band. This song can lift you up no matter how bad a week you're having
Great bands know that they don't have to "rock" all the time. Lush covers the gamut of emotion. They can aggressive, prickly, airy, somber, cold, and warm. Their sound it textured yet hazy, ambient yet melodic. This one (one of my favorites) is light and bouncy. Yep, there's nothing wrong with a happy tune.
Gorgeous sound. For me the combo of Never Never then running into Lit Up on their album 'Split' is just gorgeous. Can remember sitting on the North Cornish coast, looking out to sea, working out some emotional stuff to those two tracks. Thanks girls.
Now that I'm no longer on drugs and see this post, I say to myself... WTF WAS I SAYING AND WTH AM I THINKING! I'M 25 MAN! YOU'RE NOT AS OLD AS YOU THINK!
I love the 12 string Gretsch - Miki got amazing tones out of her guitars. She played a 12 string ES 335 as well. She didn't consider herself a great guitarist but I beg to differ. She knew how to get great sounds out of her instrument. Lush really holds up well after so much time.
vista7 This one is not a Gretsch, but an Epiphone Riviera 12 (actually made by the Gibson Nashville Custom shop in 1993, one of a kind, specially for her and identical to the vintage ones).

It's an reissue of the Epiphone Riviera made by the Nashville Gibson Custom Shop in 1993. Only 300 were made that year ; 299 with 6 strings and only one, this one, with 12, at Miki's request.
You're right. I always thought it was a Gretsch. Miki spoke of one guitar she found in a pawn shop that she uses (or used to use) for a really good price.
This was her Gibson ES-335/12. To think she got it for 800 $ around 1989 - wow. I have one too but I had to pay much more. I still don't know exactly how old is hers, given it was made between 1965 and 1969 (mine is from '67).
Emma, not anymore apparently. Miki founded Piroshka with Kevin Mc Killop (Mose), Justin Welsh (formerly Elastica and Lush), Michael Conway (Modern English), the band was active in 2019 and their first album was released, but not now. They can't tour anymore it seems.
"The future's yours to hold and you're really not very old" What a line. Another blinding song by Lush, "Split" is my favourite album by a long shot, it sounds to me like the truest voice of the band - "Spooky" was them finding their feet, "Lovelife" had a few too many commercial tracks for my tastes...
I know the tour is going back to Europe, but please come to Las Vegas sometime. I literally have listened to Lush at least 3 days a week since '91. I own all their CDs & singles on hard media. Shoegaze & dream pop forever.

I wish that was still a thing!

The most underrated band ever
Yes. Sensuality meets pop meets fragility meets groove meets spirituality meets melancholy meets spirals of endless sonic sugar meeting beauty as beauty meets timelessness...
AMEN!!!!
One of my Top 10-15 favorite Bands of all time and practically nobody knows who they are or were???
Off the charts Underrated!!!
There were so many amazing in the 90s, lots of competition out there...😏🍺🥳
Just love the depth of sound of Miki's 12-string Gibson. Beautiful full sound.
I love Lush!!! Weird how well this stuff ages. It's 1995 again!
Phil King's basslines are one of this band's secret weapons. I love it when he builds a guide tone line, out of the roots. It gives the chord progression a great lift ! Very musical !!
The guy is absolutely brilliant. So many people think this band was simple in their playing style but the chord and melody crafting is pretty amazing.
Chris was exceptional, also.
NB Emma wrote every part of her songs and demoed them on 4-track for the band (with drum machine and bass part included). The same instinctive genius approach to counterpoint can be heard in songs recorded back when Steve Rippon was the bass player: Deluxe, Breeze and so on. It’s all E. Anderson.

I discovered Lush in the summer of 1990 while writing my master's thesis. Great times.
Such an amazingly sublime and underrated song.
Absolutely. Lovely harmonies and wonderful key changes. Definitely an overlooked gem
Who on Earth would be still able to write such a song these days ?
I could watch Miki strum chords all day.
Miki and Emma have such soothing, relaxing voices... just like angels from heaven. Miki's not bad on the eyes either :) !!
Those who managed to see them in those times were lucky bastards
Twice. I was lucky
I was one of them too.I should have done more though (saw them twice) back then.
I’m that guy. Saw them twice in Toronto! Front and centre.
Saw them at Crystal Palace Bowl in August 1990. Great day!. They were on with All About Eve, The Cure and James.
I really loved Chris's drumming, specially on the song ocean. The guy was extremely talented.
He was a great drummer who complemented great songs....no more no less. His presence in this world is surely missed
he's one of the best
One of the most underrated Bands...
If I could go back to visit this moment in time. so lovely.
she had the best hair in rock--for a spell.
I'm a latecomer to Lush but I really really like them - haunting and etherial - beautiful
I love this song’s rhythm!
If I was present at this concert at age 13 I would have been in love for the rest of my life.
When I saw them first I was 23 but I get your feeling man.
Miki is so talented. It's a shame the band never really took off. We ought to have another half dozen Lush albums out there to enjoy (at least). Love their sound even today.
Lush sound never gets old and never will.
Check out Miki's new band, Piroshka. Good stuff.
Lush stopped making music after the drummer killed himself. I understand they didn't continue after that.
@@wanneske1969 Lush reunited in 2015 with drummer Justin Welch of Elastica filling in. They released an EP, went on tour, and broke up again in 2016.
@@pfink70 I know, but it just wasn't the same and they probably knew it themselves, hence the break up

Wonderful. So perfect. Took be back 14-15 years ago to a better place in time. Thanks for the memories, Mikki, Emma, Phil, Chris.
Biggest regret in life? Being born in ´95 and missing this
Happiest moment in life? Finding Lush as a 20-something and falling in love
I'm in the exact same boat
Me too I wish I could have seen them live what a band!
I was lucky to be there from the start and even luckier to see them at Lollapalooza 1992 downtown Miami at Bicentennial Park.
sames :))
Haha I feel you except 2001 & finding them at 22 (but really starting listening them now at 23).
Thank God everyone loves lush beautiful stuff

You feel like I do
Like the whole world's forgotten you
And your life is so dull and predictable
Your room seems like a cell
And you don't sleep very well
And your friends only talk to point and to mock
And to ridicule
One day things won't seem the same way, I know
Morning in the mirror
Things will suddenly seem much clearer I promise, it's alright
His words don't flatter me
And they're printed for all to see
I don't care, he's not there
It's all history
The future's yours to hold
And you're really not very old
And your life is so white, so clean and so bright
And holds mystery
Morning in the mirror
Things will suddenly seem much clearer I promise it's alright
One day things won't seem the same way, I know
One day things won't seem the same way, I know
