During just a 2-day backpacking trip, I was dehydrated in 90 degree heat, had digestion issues, kept losing the trail, got DESTROYED by mosquitoes & couldn't sleep. But goodness, I learned a ton and can't wait to get back out there. Your videos remind me why we go through the pain sometimes!

auw, not all young people are addicted to the phone. My daughter likes her phone but she LOVES nature, animals, birds....etc. I feel sorry for people who freak without technology. They never learned to love the outdoors...it's sad really.

You can absolutely do it. I'm 17, turning 18 in one month, just graduated and am solo hiking the JMT (John Muir Trail) this summer! Don't let anyone tell you you're "too young" or "can't" or "aren't you worried about bears" etc. blah blah blah. You can do anything you set your mind to! Good luck Mia!

As someone who cowboy camps, if at all possible, to the point of pushing my luck against the weather, I almost always get to watch the stars at night. I think I setup my shelter on the PCT maybe 9 times. Not that I'm against night hiking, particularly when you can do so without using a light due to a lack of vegetation along the trail and the ground color being a light color so it reflects star/moonlight well. Hiking above treeline in the Sierra Nevada with all the light colored granite can be really magical at night .
But one thing I learned from all the cowboy camping I do, at night, I always put all my unneeded stuff that I care about inside my backpack, close it up, and cover it with my rain jacket (in case of dew or frost), including my water bottles which usually keeps them from freezing unless it's really cold. Late September 2017, on the JMT, on one very cold morning surrounded by a few inches of snow leftover from a storm the day before, my water bottles (which had not formed any ice overnight in my pack), started to freeze up sitting on the ground in the short 10-15 minutes it took to pack up my cowboy camp so I had a Gatorade flavored slushy with breakfast. Just shows you how even a minimal amount of insulation overnight helps against an unexpected freeze.
I'm really enjoying your CDT videos as I'm starting to think about hiking it, so it's great to see what I may be getting into.

Hey Dixie, I just wanted to say thank you for all the videos, and for giving all of us that watch an outlet to learn from you and join you in some way on your adventures - You truly are an inspiration and guiding light to so many. I'd also love to give a shout-out to your good friend and trailmate, Perk, for also being such an amazing fellow hiker and person - no major thru-hike of yours would seem the same without him. I can't begin to tell you how much you and your videos are helping me deal with something personal in my own life at the moment, providing me with such valuable insight and things to consider as I prepare my own great hiking adventures into the wilderness. Throughout your videos, you've exuded the perefect balance of true kindness, confidence, determination, honesty and humility that I wish more people, myself included, would learn to have in their daily lives. If anything, even if someone isn't thinking about going out hiking, you've truly inspired us to be honest with ourselves, to hike our own hikes, to live our own lives and to stop listening to the negative voices in our heads, and the people & circumstances that surround us that try to convince us differently. Best of luck to all of you as you continue to put one foot in front of the other, moving closer to your completion of the CDT and earning your Triple Crown. Sincerely, thank you Dixie!

109,000 subscribers Dixie! Holy crap! It's awesome to think so many people are following you on your quest for the crown. I talked to a ranger on the PCT who said that since Reese Witherspoon did the movie Wild that they have seen a big spike in women hiking the trail. I'd like to see if your crown run will do the same. No disrespect to the author of Wild, but I think your hiking story is way more awesome. 20 years ago who would have thought a girl from Opelika, Alabama would be followed by 100,000 people. You can feel proud Dixie. Rock on!!!

Great episode Dixie... Because of you I had my first backpacking experience last week with my daughter (who has autism) and we loved it. Everything went wrong in our trip, the air pad had a hole, it was freezing at 34°F, my sleeping bag was too light and I picked the wrong campsite 😂... However we can't wait to go back again... Thank you so much for being such an inspiration to us 🤗🤗🥀

Bummer on freezing the Sawyer. Especially with your water sources, heh. Great attitude through that.
I agree and can understand what you said about "enjoying" the sucky parts that are integral to the success of what we want to do/see/achieve. I had a coach that told me, "Pain is temporary! Glory lasts forever! Chicks dig guys with scars!" And he was right. I've mostly forgotten the pain, and remember the glory clearly. And scars are just tattoos with a better story.
Thanks for sharing your trip with us. I really look forward to the next video, and am happy when I see the notification another is up. :)

Yay! They came in! Lol....Those little filters are life savers. But you showed that you can/could survive without them. After all, what did people do before they were invented? You all did great. And I loved the completeness of the visual story telling here. (Well done, Aaron.). It all ties in so well with the interesting book you talked about, Dixie. Never thought about what challenges we would choose in the pursuit of a goal. Something to ponder on my next hike. Thank you.

We used to use bleach if we had no halazone. Or boil the water. Or drink if it "looked" like a good source. My friend had amoebic dysentery from drinking "good" water about fifteen years ago, he finally got religion about sterilizing water.

I think your ability to get through the annoyances and struggles on the trail is what gets you all the way to the end goal. I love your way of turning things around, even when they suck, and putting things back into perspective. I also love your saying "a bad day on the trail is still better than a good day at work." (or something to that effect) :) Enjoying your CDT videos a ton!

I was exploring the Andaman Islands (India) about 20 years ago, myself and a German guy had heard rumours of a remote beach cave we could hike to and stay in. We also had the problem of finding a water solution, we bought local desert/sweets from a bakery in a small town & traded them with a local farmer in the area for water, we knew the secret beach was nearby. The farmer let us fill our water tanks from his water supply hose, OMG the beginning stuff came out sludgy green but finally flowed clear, we were on foot and managed to get our heavy tanks down the cliff side to the beach using ropes and after some exhaustive hiking, we found our cave! We spent several GLORIOUS days there fishing, swimming & hiking around naked all day like we were the only people on earth, we made fires to boil the water & cook, used tablets to purify it & had to add coffee because it was STINKING but we never got sick, thank goodness.

I was hoping for a vid from you today, and not only did I get it, I got one I really needed to hear. I'm at the Grand Canyon and having one of those days where everything that can go wrong is. But you are so right, if I could choose my struggles, I'd take high winds blowing my tent away, busted Sawyer water bags, and USPS being a day late with a resupply over any of the "real world" problems I left behind.
Now send some of that rain to the Grand Canyon!

Along similar lines, I quit my job last year to take care of my dad before he died. Contrary to what some people thought, even some of my friends. There were and are struggles from that choice but I have no regrets. As life would have it I had to quit my job again last week to take care of my mom. The struggles will still be there but the reward of loving on my parents is priceless. When my turn comes to hike the AT I'll probably play

I'm almost embarrassed to say that I've never listened to an audiobook - maybe I don't want my balloon burst when the voice doesn't match that of the character the way I envision him/her sounding. But after Dixie's Book of the Week review, "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Bleep (sort of...)," I downloaded the Audible app, got the book, I've been listening to it, and dang, it makes sense! And here I thought I'd just pick up tips on blisters, tents, water sources and hitching! I can see that there are at least 7 individuals who would greatly benefit from listening to the book....

I am currently reading that book and it completely applies to life and thru hiking- I am planning on starting the Long Trail in a few weeks and I know that thinking about the struggles I want to take on will help me succeed. Safe travels when you get back on the trail!

Elrond should have SO totally chosen you to take the one ring to the fires of Mount Doom instead of that Frodo. He just whined the entire way. But you’re so upbeat even when things go wrong! I’m just say’n...

You can test your filter with blue food coloring. The giardia molecule is between 4 to 6 microns and blue food coloring is .1 micron. So if you put food coloring into your water, filter it, and it comes out clear the filter works. I always pack with a small eye drops bottle with food coloring and it has saved me for this exact situation a couple of times! Love all of your videos, thanks for the inspiration!

Love the video! That last bit about the book is pretty inspirational and definitely plays into the mental game that is all challenges! I've always loved a good challenge and that aspect of myself has really benefitted me since losing my leg 9 years ago in a motorcycle accident. I was planning to thru-hike the AT and it seemed impossible so I switched my focus to the Paralympics. In 2014 I competed in snowboarding at the Games in Russia. I just barely missed a spot on the 2018 team going to Korea. I push myself so hard and honestly I enjoy it. Next Spring I'm planning to start my thru-hike and after that get right back to chasing the 2022 Paralympics. It's not often that I find others inspiring so thank you!
