Never in my life did I think I'd be spending an evening watching the restoration of a vice.... and loving every bit of it. Awesome!. Only problem now is that it looks too nice to use
Putting in all the time and effort working like this on a vice always makes you think twice before abusing it in any way. Over the years, It is bound to pick up a few dings and scratches , that cannot be helped. If I do need to 'take things to the extreme' or weld in the vice, I have an old 'beater of a vice that soaks up all the abuse and, if I really need do do some heavy hammer work, I have a 120kg blacksmiths leg vice. Truly the work of a craftsman. Everything was done to perfection. No shortcuts were taken. There was the benefit of having a lathe and a mill handy. ;-) Greasing everything well during reassembly - including pins, screws, locking collars and inner surfaces - will keep the rust away for years to come, just like the visible surfaces. The paint was a nice touch. It looked great. At the end you were able too crank the vice all the way in and out using just your finger. The restoration was flawless. Also, your English is very good.

I wouldn't say people do refurbishing, even. More like cleaning, lubing, and painting (especially with vises...and there are a lot of vise videos on youtube).
Keep this in mind people who are DIYers, this is an excellent way to get cheap tools. You don't have to restore them as good as he does, just clean them up and make sure they work. My uncle used to buy semi junk tools at auction and fix them up. If he couldn't make it work he had a couple of buddies who would help him. He had a shop full of tools you would think he paid thousands for. Most were only a couple hundred or less. Nice machines from the 30s, 40s, 50s, the good heavy duty stuff. Drill presses, a small lathe, band saws. None of them worked when he got them. Now he can build almost anything out of wood.
So at first, (Like a lot of comments I see on videos like this) I am very glad that you did not add a sound track and that you added quick tidbit of text commentary. The video, in my opinion, is fantastic! Truly I thought, "How can someone make a restoration video of a vise, interesting?" Well I watched it all the way thru and somehow, you did it. I am also very impressed with the end result. I also like your solutions to the issues you faced along the way. Nice work sir!
I never expected to watch a video about restorating a vice the evening of Christmas; but me and my cat both enjoyed watching this. Excellent work, if only I had a sanding machine... I could restore a lot of old tools !
If you are talking about the sand blaster, you can use electrolysis too. Look up collecting old tools. They will give information how to build one. Not hard. Good results.
Depending on the size of items you would have to bead blast there are many price ranges from $89.00 to several thousand. I only have a small one but it works for what I need it for and cost me around $359.00. Treat yourself, it pays off many times over.
I have never seen a transformation like this before. As a metal worker myself I can only appriciate the truely amazing effort you put into this. Well done! You just earned a new subscriber, and I'm hitting the bell!
'Necessity is the mother of invention' you make a new tool to do one specific job on one specific item to use one specific time. Brilliant. Lovely finish on this restoration
Cool! i've got one of those vices rusted out in my garage...now all i need is a Lathe, a petrol wash bath, a sand blaster, and a welder and a free week, and i'm set.
Well done. Thank you for doing this restoration and showing the stages you had to go through. I wish I still had some of my father’s old tools that I would love to restore like this.

Watching from South Alabama. I, too, am delighted to watch this video and to not have my ears subjected to some awful soundtrack, thank you for that. I enjoyed the precision and craftsmanship you displayed. Not many people would go through such trouble to restore an old bench vise. Bravo to you, sir. The end result is spectacular.
I had no idea you can make something like a vise so beautiful. The 3 colors are amazing and I love that you dont have music covering over the sound of the tools you use to fix it up. Great content!
This is 100% art. If this was just for function it would be MUCH cheaper / far less time to toss it in the recycle bin and buy a new one. This guy did a better job than the factory does with these things.
I just watched this for the second time at 3am. During this 17 minute video, all my troubles were gone. I think I have watched all your videos now. Please make more!
There are tons of people like this, we don't all bother with TH-cam channels. If you're on the OCD spectrum, this sort of hobby is EXACTLY what brings you peace.
Wow, I said earlier that the air hammer/riveting tool was the coolest one but the more I watch the more I become Indecisive... I will just say your skills are amazing and the things you restore compliment your skills very well. I wish I could send you some neat things I have from my great grand parents collection of antique things. I live in the original home place that was built in 1824 along with the grounds that have been untouched in as long. So in almost 200 years the generations that have come and gone and the things we’ve amassed are amazing. We have several barns, building, and even the home full of things from centuries ago.
Just let my dinner grow cold watching this! absolutely brilliant!! Hats off to you and i totally love the lack of shed music too..doesn't need it at all. More more more..
I've found that if I'm patient, I take these rusty, valuable items and let them soak for 1-2 weeks in automatic transmission fluid. Pour enough of it in a bucket and allow the vise (or any rusty item) to be completely immersed in ATF. After a week or two, you won't have to pound or struggle greatly to get the parts separated. Good video. Thanks for posting.
I have seen many restoration videos on TH-cam. But one thing I have to say is that you clearly put your hands to work on this one here. IMHO The best Restoration I have ever seen. Well worth the work. These devices go for a pretty penny brand new and at this restoration point. You got your time well spent and worth the effort with the evidence to back it up as proof or Restoration. The other thing I have to say is… Your hands and skin texture says you’re young still. Means Lots of Restoration more to go in your life. Awesome is not the word I’m looking for with this video. Pristine craftsmanship is still not enough. Just keep doing what you do man. At this point you have lots to go and lots more to show us. High 5!
Thank God for metal shop back in the late 70's. I have worked with all these tools and understand this video because of it. This is VERY HARD work but the results speak for itself. Good channel....... nothing but the steak ....

@@mariegriffiths Oh he was fine; comfy next to the laptop... he seemed to enjoy this as much as i did.
I can not begin to express just how much joy I got from watching this. Honestly think one of the best resto jobs I've ever seen.
Cool! i've got one of those vices rusted out in my garage...now all i need is a Lathe, a petrol wash bath, a sand blaster, and a welder and a free week, and i'm set.
Indy Jones you are saying it like if its not alot of stuff😂😂😂
you will have plenty of free weeks when you retire,
When i wanna go to sleep i watch a restoration video. it calms me down.

It looks very slick especially with the new black jaws

Absolutely wonderful how he got fitting spare parts today from the same company who made the object he was restoring. Quality persists!
I just love seeing old, useless stuff like this restored to not only beautiful but functional. Good job!

Best restoration channel out. No music or talking, plus his skills are amazing
Thank you so much for just letting us listen to your work and not torturing us with some stupid soundtrack. This video was a delight. Much respect from Georgia, USA
Where in GA?
Watching from South Alabama. I, too, am delighted to watch this video and to not have my ears subjected to some awful soundtrack, thank you for that. I enjoyed the precision and craftsmanship you displayed. Not many people would go through such trouble to restore an old bench vise. Bravo to you, sir. The end result is spectacular.

I couldn't agree more.
Agreed
Incredible! Mad skills. I can appreciate that, my father was a tool and die maker for 35 yrs. Worked for Raytheon for 20. Great job.
I had no idea you can make something like a vise so beautiful. The 3 colors are amazing and I love that you dont have music covering over the sound of the tools you use to fix it up.

This is 100% art. If this was just for function it would be MUCH cheaper / far less time to toss it in the recycle bin and buy a new one. This guy did a better job than the factory does with these things.

Wow! A new Gressel vice! That's worth about 600 euros. Of course, the time and knowledge you put into this restoration are worth far more.

Everyone needs a vice.
I like that you film everything, showing that restoration is real and not just staged
I have no idea how i ended up here, but this was oddly satisfying to watch.
I came here thinking it was "natty dreadlocks"

I wish I could send you some neat things I have from my great grand parents collection of antique things.

A better recipe is 1/2 ATF and 1/2 Acetone. Works better then any rust penetrant I've seen.
Good idea.
