I’ve had that same Music Man since 1988. A bit beat up. Same Color, and the birds eye neck, but with a rosewood fretboard. Best bass I’ve ever played.

    I have 3 SR5’s. A 2000, a 2001 Fretless, and a 1991.
Love em all, but that 91 is a different beast!
If you find one - BUY IT !!
And run it thru a pre-Fender SWR!

Hi, friend. I am writing to you from Argentina. I have the same bass but year 89 and it happens to me that when I put it in parallel the sound is super clean without that "hum", but when I put it in series and in single coil it sounds that "hum". Does the same thing happen to your bass? Because I had understood that in series or in parallel it eliminates the "hum", but in my bass it only eliminates it if I leave it in parallel. Thanks!!

I have a similar Music Man 5. Black with Birds Eye Maple Rosewood Fretboard. I purchased mine in 93. Could be a 92. Not sure. I also have a 97 and a 2000.

Hey Johnny, do you reccomend rosewood? Or maple fretboard? I hope to buy one soon!! Not sure what fretboard to go with

Sweet. I've got a '98. I was playing a Rick 4001 but once I started using a 5-string I couldn't go back. First thing I did when I first got it (original owner) I took it to a luthier and had the neck glossed. Were they glossing the neck & head back in '88? I can't tell, does it have the wheel truss rod adjust? Why did you want an '88? Looks and sounds like mine.

The neck on that bass doesn't have a skunk stripe in back, so that means the truss-rod was installed from the front, therefore the fingerboard must have been glued on over the maple neck...? Fender used to do that, using maple veneer "caps" on their capped necks - curved veneers of maple over maple necks. The only maple slab fingerboard I've seen by Fender is on my 1997 Hendrix Tribute stratocaster. She is period correct to the 1968 stratocasters Jimi used during his last years, including pickups wound by Abigail Ybarra. Everything about this Hendrix guitar is period correct, except it's like a lefty-strat played righty, a mirror-image of the righty Jimi played lefty. The only difference is the fingerboard on his were maple capped, while the 1997 Tribute is a slab board, so no skunk stripe in back. Now Fender has skunk stripes even on necks with rosewood fingerboards, so they don't have to change their jigs from when they make one piece maple necks - both have the trussed installed from the back.
Birdseye maple is the hardest of all the hard rock maple wood types,, besides being pretty, which probably transmits vibrations better than a softer maple neck would. She sure does sound good Johnny, but you make any bass sound good...!

How are you there good sir?
    I have 2 questions if I may.
    1. Is there a different approach to slapping on a 5 string? Because I try on my 5 and I just can't. That B string just gets in the way. Strings are just going nuts all over the place. Now I'm confused cuz i see vids that tell me about hand placement. Place my thumb on the neck opposite my index n middle fingers and not to wrap it around the neck. So how the heck am i supposed to mute that B string that way.
    2. I own an OLP, MM2 I think. It looks just like your SR5 anyway it's all stock. How can I or better yet, if it were your bass what would you do to it, to make it sound as close to a music man as possible?
    🖐🏾 shadakakaahhhh!🤚🏾

Johnny you tend ta lean towards the metal sound to much treble or slap sound. Roll off the treble for a more punchy bottom end. I had 2 musician man bases but I found the G string didn’t have enough sustain when slapping E and A string were great but G👎🏻By the way Happy Valentines Day. Your fun watching
