- DINAGSA FESTIVAL GRAND PARADE 2024 | DUMALAG, CAPIZ
It’s more fun in the Philippines because of the festivals that happen in all parts of the country. Year-round. These festivals are either based on a place’s history, culture, lores and myths, on products popular to the locality, or on religious beliefs.
There’s a festival that commemorates the bravery of heroes, of a battle that liberated a town from foreign rule. There’s a festival of flowers, of masks, of lechon; there’s a festival of harvest, of bangus. There’s a festival that expresses devotion to and veneration of a saint. Name it, Filipinos celebrate a significant activity with a colorful festivity.
Of these, the festival in honor of the Señor Santo Niño figures prominently as it tells the history of Christianitization of this country. How timely, too, that it happens in January-as it becomes a foretaste of more fun festivals all throughout the year.
The Señor Santo Niño, the image of the holy child Jesus Christ, is venerated through a month-long festivity in various parts of this archipelago-from Cebu to Tondo to Kalibo to Iloilo. During this period, the streets are filled with revellers who dance to the beat of the drums. These dancers, usually members of a tribe, move in unison; their movements a form of prayer to the Holy Child.
I have been to two of the more popular festivals in honor of the Señor Santo Niño-Aklan’s Ati-atihan Festival, and Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival. Each has its history and unique character, but both honor the Señor Santo Niño.
Less known to many, however, our quiet town of Dumalag, Capiz has its own version of the celebration held every last Sunday of January. The Sison Family has since sponsored the feast since the 1940s.
My 74-year-old mother has a story to tell about this devotion. She vividly recalls that she was 6 years old when she first joined the short procession around the plaza. Our pariente Melchor “Oyong Eso” Fajardo carried the image of the Señor Santo Niño during the procession. He also led the devotees in chanting “Viva, Señor Santo Niño!”
Aside from the procession around the plaza, there is also the yearly tradition of naming a “Niño.” The child, garbed in regalia similar to the Señor Santo Niño’s, is paraded as a representation of the child Jesus. He is also a reminder that a child, innocent and sweet, has a special place in Christ’s heart. The devotees, on the other hand, pray for that Niño that he grows in God’s favor, in the Señor Santo Niño’s likeness.
