CHRIS BLOM In the FDNY signal 5-5-5-5 means a firefighter has died. It comes from the days before radio and telephone when fire departments were alerted via telegraph. In the event of the death of a firefighter or other important person the central fire department office would send 5 dashes, pause, 5 dashes, pause, 5 dashes, pause, 5 dashes over every fire department telegraph line to inform them of a death and to lower their flags to half-staff.
