I don't know. I kind of think they peaked in Season 5. 6 and 7 are good seasons, but Season 5 tops 'em. That's the season with _Darkmok,_ _Disaster,_ _Unification,_ _The Masterpiece Society,_ _I, Borg,_ and most especially, _The Inner Light._
Although Season 6 has _Relics_ and _Rascals_ and Season 7 has _Parallels,_ and they're each _very_ profound episodes, they don't elevate these seasons above 5.

  • @jimrobinson9979

@@MrChiddler Yeah, I thought maybe the first and/or second season of DS9 could be considered a bit weak, but there was a lot of good work there too. I went back to season 1 and 2 of TNG a few years ago just to see why I never felt like rewatching those seasons for so long, and was immediately reminded why. It is a slog. The quality jump at season 3 is wild, it's almost a new show, and much the better for it.

    • @corvus1970
      @corvus1970 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@OnTheRocks71 A big reason for that huge jump in quality in season 3 revolves around the fact that Roddenberry was far less involved. He was a visionary to be sure, but by the time the late 80s rolled around, he'd lost touch with how to tell stories relevant and entertaining to the audiences of the era.

It was a work of insane genius to make the new one look faster by making it wider and have smaller engines. The design is 100% counterintuitive, and almost any other designer would have made it pointier and have bigger engines. (See also, the Sovereign or Intrepid class...) By doing everything "wrong" in the design of the Galaxy class, you get some sort of intuitive sense that super advanced technologies you don't understand have changed the rules of how things are designed. Like a sailor from the 1800's seeing a 20th century ship with a tiny radar mast and realizing that a ship's mast no longer needs to be big enough for sails.

The sincerity of spirit that the Next Gen carries, especially in the earlier seasons, warms an old gal's heart.
I had the kindest parents in the universe, they bought me a Bushnell Star Machine Projector, went to the mall and bought "Best of Both Worlds" soundtrack for my Talkboy,
........and I genuinely cried when my Dad somehow went and bought the Enterprise D toy ship on his way home... from work for me....
annd I pulled all the curtains and turned the bushnell on nand flew my Enterprise around the room like a tiny idiot.
*wipes her eyes* I became an astronomer because of that. The Bushnell wasn't just a prop it was meant to be a sky chart device. We're able to target Messier objects by memory today on our seven inch Celestron thanks to that thing, and we're all happy.
Sometimes a Galaxy Class or Bird of Prey might still fly through the frame.

While the first two seasons had some growing pains to go through in order to separate itself from comparisons to the original series, there were a number of great early episodes, The Measure of a Man being of particular distinction. I think the writing got better, but another factor might be something Patrick Stewart talked about on Conan's podcast, promoting his new memoir. He said during the first season he scolded his castmates for fooling around on the set. But the outcome was they convinced him to lighten up and fool around, too. Sounds like a very playful environment.

I grew up catching random episodes as a kid, and finally did a full rewatch a few years back. I found the most interesting thing about the first season is the costumes. The onesie-style uniform were reportedly terribly uncomfortable to film in, and yet they drop the man-dresses and even Troi's Uhura-style outfit fairly quickly 😅 The evolution of the costumes across the seasons is also very interesting, and I really appreciate when the crew finally get some comfortable fits.

TNG is my favourite Star Trek series. It's what was coming out for the first seven years of my life, it's the one I had the most merchandise from, it's the one I watched in reruns and on VHS the most. It's my Star Trek basically. Worf was a very late addition to the cast, which is why he doesn't have a very big role in this episode. Initially Roddenberry didn't want anything he considered a retread of what they'd done on TOS, which is why there isn't a Vulcan in the main cast. However one of the producers convinced him to add a Klingon to the crew, to show how enemies can become allies given the right circumstances, so Worf was added and Michael Dorn was the last cast member to be added. But, that addition to the cast opened us up to learning more about Klingons than we probably wanted to know as the show goes on. Data is the TNG version of Spock basically. And De Forest Kelley agreed to appear, below the standard actors's pay of the time as a favour to Roddenberry.

I figured you would enjoy this series, Jen, but I’m a tad surprised that you clearly love it from the first episode! I saw it when it was originally shown in 1987, and I liked the show, but didn’t quite come to outright love it until around the third season, when it had settled into itself and discarded a few things that didn’t quite work before, plus Riker had grown a beard, and the uniforms were redesigned and became a bit less Spandex-y, but also more alien races had been introduced by then and we got to know the characters much better, and we began to get a better understanding of how the Star Trek universe was organized and how everyone related to each other and so on. The series ran for 7 seasons, 4 seasons longer than The Original Series (TOS), so obviously they did something right.
Once you finish with the final season, THEN see STAR TREK GENERATIONS (1994), which segues perfectly from the series and is a real emotional roller coaster, and then continue with STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996), which most fans consider the very best of the Next Generation theatrical films (as do I).
By then you’ll also want to start your deep dive into STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, which began in 1993. Some of the characters from TNG are in that series, along with plenty of new ones, and you’ll be able to see another side of the Federation and the various alien species and threats to the Federation encountered in that series.

1:53 "Is that a Klingon on the crew?"
Yes, as a matter of fact, it is. His name is Worf, and you've actually seen him before (sort of). Actor Michael Dorn, who plays Worf in the series, as well as Star Trek: Deep Space 9, appeared as Worf's grandfather, also named Worf, in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country as Kirk & McCoy's defense counselor during the trial scene. Since The Next Generation series premiered well before Star Trek VI, Worf's character was already firmly established, so the producers decided that Michael's portrayal as a Klingon in the movie would not be the character he was already playing in the series, but instead he would appear as a different character who just happened to share the same name. Of course, most fans got a kick out of it when the judge referred to him as Colonel Worf, and later on, it was established in the Star Trek canon that Colonel Worf was the grandfather of Lt. Worf. In fact, part of the reason for Star Trek VI was to establish peace between the Klingon Empire & the Federation in order to give plausibility for a Klingon serving aboard a Federation starship almost a century later.

And over the years did business with Lincoln Enterprises, the company Majel Barrett started to sell Star Trek items to the public and I bought a set of the Original Uniform Patches, a IDIC necklace, and a Miniature Enterprise Pendant like the one used in the episode "Cats Paw". Anyway the summer of 1987 we fans got wind of a new Star Trek TV program being made for that fall. I guess because of my doing business with Lincoln Enterprises, someone at Paramount had my address because that summer I got an official letter from a Mr Argyle introducing himself as a member of the crew of the new Enterprise and announcing the show and asking me to watch it. This is actually a pretty damn good pilot that has really grown on me. Yeah, its a bit wonky in parts, but it does a good job introducing the characters, the setting and new Technology, has great Special Effects for the time, some beautiful music (Dennis McCarthy making his debut here, by 2005 he would have scored literally hundreds of Episodes) while telling a Story that is TREK to its core at the same time. Plus, most importantly, it introduces Q! And that Data/McCoy-Scene never fails to pull at my heartstrings.
Overall, I can already say this: TNG is epic. Objectively, _Deep Space Nine_ is probably my favourite of all the Trek-Shows... but somehow TNG is closer to my heart.
