you are making a massive impact on people’s lives with your knowledge brother I started a microbiology degree because of you dude & will be getting into mycology soon you are the man 🙏🏼
Hey there! This is Josh with Wild Growth Mushrooms over in Illinois. I LOVE this video (love all your videos ofc). I've discussed this exact issue with various folks with the State of IL and University of Illinois when we are round tabling different nuances of this industry in regards to good ag practices. UofI and I are interested in collaborating on tackling some of these complex questions to avert problems down the road. When that time comes, I'd love to poke you to see if you have an interest in joining these discussions!
Thanks for all the great information you share, Gary. I'm starting a farm and your videos have been invaluable. I'll be making an order from your etsy shop soon!
Im a sing coach, you need to take 1-2sec pauses to expire through your nose. You don't breathe properly when making those videos . By the way, great video
Hey Gary! It's josh , Colorado springs. Hope all is well. I have a business proposition for you ( I need an hour of your time to evaluate what I have going on here at my lab in Colorado springs.) I value your feedback. Do you have an email ?
I can find a thousand and one vids on how to get a tub of magic mushrooms growing in my closet, but hardly any on actual genetics. My interest right now is about successive generations and what actually qualifies as a "second generation" and when like, during grain colonization, liquid culture, substrate colonization -when exactly is it considered a separate and successive generation and do they weaken as they go or de-stabilize?
I feel smarter knowing the difference now thanks, easy to follow, wouldn't expect new Zealand to have such a childish culture with their odd regulations
I am not sure that I understand what I have, but I have 3 plates that I made from an initial spore print. They're very dense and not what I (as a complete novice) to be strong colonies - that aid, they're also not contaminated. I have taken sections from one or two of them and have observed ryzomorphic growth from these sections that are actually rising from the agar. I have commented on a previous video asking you if a plate could be too dense with spores.
Hello. I have a question. I heard that should vary the nutrition of agar, so that the mycelium does not become enzymatically lazy. Is that correct? Thank you
Another awesome video! Thanks again. I really like that you talk about topics that other mycology youtube channels seem to overlook for whatever reason.
PH enotype - PH ysical properties | G enotype - G entetic properties In less than 6 minutes you connected the dots in a way that I'll always remember. The art of educating. Thank you...professor G. The vids are looking great!
Are there any comprehensive textbooks you could recommend on this subject? I’d really like to get well educated and hands-on with breeding crosses of genetics and obviously being able to understand genetic variability and the difference between mon/mon and di/mon etc Now that it’s been a couple years since you made this video also, which way have things gone? (Strict dna genotype ID vs phenos)
Im working on a book like this - right now the best resource is journal articles - I think we are headed more towards dna sequencing being the golden standard as it becomes more accessible
Gary we love you! Do you have any internships available? I don't live to far, I'm out in Littleton, CO, I can help you with any hard work you don't enjoy doing, just for the opportunity to learn?
Very well said. Thats why when we work with a strain we "domesticate" that strain to our grow techniques, environment and manipulations. In order to create better yields.
I appreciate the feedback these are all one take videos usually in between inoculations or receiving deliveries which is why it may seem like I’m out of breath. Mushroom farming is no joke and I just enjoy getting my thoughts out there
WOW, I started with absolutely no knowledge of phenotype vs genotype, except what the words mean (but not how it relates to mycology or the current dilemma). Now I completely understand! All in 6 minutes. You are seriously a *fantastic* instructor! I really appreciate your videos. Thank you very much for taking the time to create and upload them!
I love a good loophole 👌 Same thing with the united kingdom cant even cultivate lions mane reishi or cordyceps they even went as far as including chaga on the list even though theyr mainly symbiotic with birch and rarely grown
To my knowledge, it isn't illegal to cultivate lions mane, although it is illegal to pick it in the wild. I'm not sure about reishi and cordyceps though.
You sir are a beast. I head dived into mycology a few years ago and I have listened and learned from your experiences and your talks. Thank you so very much. I wish you and your family the best.🙏
Hi Gary..... so correct me if I'm wrong. Portobello is a specific genotype/strain of mushroom. An individual Portobello mushroom produces spores. All of those spore combinations will produce the Portobello genotype/strain however each spore combination will express a different phenotype which is a slight genetic variation within the Portobello genotype/strain. Is this correct?
Ben from Colorado Littleton to be specific . I am currently running into minor issues. How do I get the mycelium not to grow over my metal racks. I came up with a new technique but I'm afraid it has turned mycelium aggressive. I have a corn cake I have a dirt cake and I have regular straight out of the jar mycelium growth. Three different ways in shotgun Chambers. All of them have grown outside of the cakes and have spread to the edges of the metal racks they're sitting on. This currently will not allow me to rehydrate my cakes for they have grown into one piece with the metal. Any ideas personally I was thinking about putting Vaseline around the cakes next time on the metal.
our patch stalled out we got some promising grayish tissue but then nothing - its been cold and rainy and the wild ones nearby are popping so still hopeful and will make some adjustments for next round
That was a great explanation as well as practical example. Great info. It seems like our thinking is going to have to evolve to avoid so narrowly over-classifying a group of organisms that defy our best efforts to put them in buckets. I really want to get into sequencing mushrooms and have largely figured out the process from an Alan Rockefeller how-to.
I agree this needs to be addressed better than it has been so far - soon prices will come down where people can do all their samples on the fly in real time - it will be a game changer for breeding

How did it go? Interested in the same thing.

Absolutely! That sounds interesting and fun - best of luck to you and Ill be waiting for that email 👍

This is why I follow your work. I just got your reply email and I'm looking forward to growing your phenol types! lol

What kind of equipment u need gary?

it depends on each individual strain, Cordyceps is very susceptible to degradation while blue oyster strains remain robust for years
I feel smarter knowing the difference now thanks, easy to follow, wouldn't expect new Zealand to have such a childish culture with their odd regulations

Do they still need that strain i can get that genotype 😅easy i have a company in Australia who sends me genetic all the time gets through no problemz
You're the best! Thanks for the knowledge
master geek my brotha !! this lad knows a lot bout fungi ;)
This is good information. Thanks.

We will be expanding soon and can use a lot of help - stay tuned 🙂

Love your videos. But your lack of breathing makes it really hard to focus on you. Slow down, relax your throat, and breath from your diaphragm.

you are a pioneer. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us !

Oak N spore a cool guy, swear he is related to Alexander volvanaski ufc featherweight champ.
Damn you’re a genius, been going through your channel for a bit and it’s a gold mine of information, thank you very much sir.

Wow this was a semi deep convo.. I really enjoyed it and actually understood it.. shows how far I came from 2 years ago
dude you ask and you shall receive !! ☺️☺️ love ya dude thank you for this mate mush love
Very cool watch, thanks.
Very clear thanks to you

yes that’s correct but not every spore crosses there is a specific amount of spores that are compatible with each other 👍
Great stuff. Thank you!
Thanks for the this .

Thanks for watching - use glass or plastic instead for a barrier
Great video thanks for the info
How did the morrels produce? Found three two days ago. Yes more of your quality tutelage. Thanks.

bro you okay? you are out of breath
I do these videos in one take and this was after running around looking for my tripod hah so it is what it is
Why do you always sound like you're out of breath?
Anxiety. He's neurodivergent which means he's smarter than you. 😊
