I also do not agree with Jeremy sinning it. 11:22 - 11:36 - I do agree with Jeremy here on that it's a sin when we get the "thing doesn't do what it normally does once someone's watching" cliche, it's been done many times now, going back to the Warner Brothers singing frog who always stopped singing once someone besides the main protagonist was watching. To answer your question, basically, yes, the Mask is God. Death Battle even did a thing pitting the Mask (specifically the character from the original comicbook series nobody tells you this movie's based on) against Deadpool, with basically the same resolution as Goku v Superman for similar reasons (ie, one's story is about fighting bad guys, and one's story is about being omnipotent). Also, as they said in the movie, it only works at night and the Mask's host isn't fully in control of their decisions while transformed; hence, internal and external conflicts. Penultimately, I'm not sure why the mask boomerangs back to Stanley. Maybe it prefers, but doesn't require, its host to have a goofy sense of humor. There are several cut scenes, depending on where you watch it. On TV for example, they would cut out the scenes of him handling the car mechanics and the next-day scene with the police and the ambulance at the scene. Also, in the scene where he turns a balloon into a machine gun, in some TV versions he never fires the machine gun at the thugs.

Additionally, having grown up in the 80s-90s with a father working in the newspaper, and thus spending MANY after school hours in the press room and offices, yes, archives like this do exist
11:21 That's what I used to think too until someone pointed out to me that Ben Stein's character had just mentioned that Loki was a 'night god'. This is the only time in the movie where anybody tries using the mask during the daytime.
there was a deleted scene in the printing press room where they explained more of the plan BUT it ended with them throwing a dude into the press and like... printing newspapers with a front page story of the guy dying in BLOOD.
Milo was f'ing awesome in this movie! You could really feel his personality when he wouldn't give up the keys and feel how sad he was at the jail when he couldn't make the jump that Ipkiss needed him to make.
5:55 “Is he just able to conjure shot out of mid-air?” CinemaSins struggles with a concept that teenagers grasped immediately with no explanation over thirty years ago.
Two words, Jeremy. Toon Force. You hit the nail on the head when you "Roger Rabbit, but without actually acknowledging that toons exist." The mask has the same kind of overpowered wacky antic abilities as any old time cartoon character.
5:50 I mean, I have seen a guy in Italy who was jumping between balconies and scaling up a wall with just his hands to haul up lights for the upcoming winter display. I mean the most he went was three stories, but still it was wild to watch. His buddy meanwhile had just been using the doors like a normal guy while their supervisor looked like he was going to have a heart attack on the ground level.
I think it's fair to say that the Mask is so powerful that there shouldn't be much conflict in this movie. And there isn't anytime Stanley is wearing the Mask, because you're right he basically has God-like cartoon powers. The real conflicts stem from how wearing the Mask affects Stanley's real life and how he can stay away from the police and gangs without ever going on a straight up murder spree. The only people the Mask (Stanley) ever hurt were Dorian, who we assume drowned after being flushed down a pool, and his swindling mechanics who had...bad things done to them. And it's interesting that this movie was as tame as it is because in the comics, the Mask was really good at murder. He did it a lot.
That makes this movie even better, to me. That means that this entire movie, Stanley/The Mask was HOLDING BACK!!!! lol Knowledge that he could have been much worse makes it all the more better a movie, to me. He CHOSE to be nice, rather than NEEDING to be nice. 😁
He should be OK, he's out of the 90 second scan range, will take some reports to get it flagged for an age check. I'm not sure whether that's the joke given the subject matter of the sin.
I loved this movie when I was younger, and I loved Richard Jeni's standup. I always wished there was a sequel where he'd get a hold of the mask and he could go all out. Rest in Peace, Richard Jeni.
to be fair, The Mask is a comic book character, hence all the physics-breaking and spontaneous manifestation of props, weapons, etc...but also this movie is somewhat of a showcase for Jim's 'natural' physical comedy
13:37 actually yes, they cut the printing press scene by a few minutes, because it progressed into Dorian violently murdering the reporter by throwing her into the printing press, so a little bit of dialogue ended up getting removed in the edit.
@@AuntieL_ATL They would have addressed that in the sequel (with her coming back) if it was ever made, but Jim Carrey never wanted to make it. If ya ask me, prime time for the Mask of the God of Mischief to make a come back.
@The_Mecha_Archivist I know they did make a sequel. However, ot was not The Mask II that they were aiming to make. But I think if the story had the same feel as the original, Jim Carrey would make a fantastic comeback. If not, I'll settle for a reboot closer to the spirit of the original comics since Deadpool is proving himself insanely popular.
@The_Mecha_Archivist He did do Ace Ventura 2, which is kind of what made him turn down more sequels in the first place, but there was also Dumb and Dumber To
I'm impressed that you got Matthew McConaughey to narrate the 33rd sin. Also worth mentioning that they made another one of these movies where they explained that the mask once belonged to Loki so wearing it does basically make you a trickster God.
Exactly what I came to say… For all intents and purposes he _is_ a god. Most of the time I don’t mind ridiculous sins, but questioning a fact over and over gets pretty grating.
He does not. Jeremy missed SO many opportunities to take off sins for Jim Carrey's funny moments. He only took off one sin for Jim Carrey's physical comedy
All those sins at the end are really Jeremy's way of removing a sin for Milo being awesome. He just doesn't want us to know that his heart isn't full of ash and hatred.
@@thanatos_razl That's what makes the scene so funny. You don't know that fact about the mask until he puts it on, making it hilariously unexpected when it doesn't work.

The Mask is actually based on a rather gory and violent toon comic about Stanley using the comical powers of the Mask to wreak terrifying vigilante justice and do whatever he wants with his powers
@@Gcsmith12 Ugh dont remind me. I hated that they did that. Thats neither in norse mythology or yhe og comic books, idk why they called it lokis mask that was such an unimportant detail to add
@@SpecsCloud it makes sense in a way. Ipkiss represents the lovable rogue sorta mischief, you know the "harmless" fun practical joke type...the lighter side of Loki. While Dorian is Loki's vengeful, dark and twisted side. Ipkiss sorta has more power because he has the imagination (influence from his love of cartoons) to bring them forth, while Dorian is only shown really using the invincibility, him spitting the bullets back at his attackers is somewhat symbolic of vengeance...he gave them back what they gave to him. That's my theory anyway
@@davidmathieson8661 Thats what he is in the movie. The mask draws out ones deepest thoughts and brings them to the forefront. Ipkiss, angry at the world for his loser status turned into a sadistic murderer, breaking the laws of physics to harm people in the most brutal ways possible. As a flipside to this, when the Police chief comes into possession of it he becomes a (albiet violent) vigilante stopping all the criminals he cant move on as a police officer because of how the law works

I'm from Kanas, and the Kansas City comment was hilarious! Now, considering I work at a newspaper, I beg to differ - we have tons of excess stacks of newspapers in our back room. Leftovers that get recycled, and we intentionally save issues up to one year prior because it never fails, some idiot will come in wanting a copy of something from eight months ago. Who else paused this video during the Pig Latin so they could decipher it? I think the Mask must give him Genie-like powers lol, and the theory is that Loki was a night god so the Mask only works at night, which is why it didn't cause Stanley to transform in the author's office. And let's not forget - this is the movie that introduced Cameron Diaz. Yes, this was her first movie. :D
"Just make this sh*t a cartoon" Um.. They did, and it was good. It even had a crossover with the Ace Ventura cartoon. Then again, back then, just about every movie had a cartoon spin-off!
If I remember right Mask basically is god, but the conflict is the fact that you lose all self-control wearing it no matter who you are. So sure, it might get you out of a pinch but if you only end up a mass murderer that's a relatively good outcome after wearing a it. In a crossover comic Lobo wore it and it went horribly for everyone involved.

paused and took me like 4 minutes trying to read it over and over to translate now my head hurts hahah
Thank you. I am too lazy to try to figure out what that actually was in English
Wow I never knew that 🤯
all sins aside, this will always be my favourite movie. such a classic and amazing movie along with the music and scenes
there was a deleted scene in the printing press room where they explained more of the plan BUT it ended with them throwing a dude into the press and like... printing newspapers with a front page story of the guy dying in BLOOD.
The dog that played Milo is the most talented dog actor I've ever seen.
Best bonus round ever!
Milo was f'ing awesome in this movie! You could really feel his personality when he wouldn't give up the keys and feel how sad he was at the jail when he couldn't make the jump that Ipkiss needed him to make.
"Stanley hasn't taken Milo on a walk this entire movie."
Isn't that why he used the bad guys as a fire hydrant?
yeah pretty much XD but why not? they did have it coming & he did need it ;) lol xxx
wait, did Jim Carrey just ding the sin bell 3 times and add 3 sins to the counter at 3:26? god thats amazing
Haha good eye on that part brilliant 😀
Lol
5:55 “Is he just able to conjure shot out of mid-air?” CinemaSins struggles with a concept that teenagers grasped immediately with no explanation over thirty years ago.
it's been a couple years since i've watched any sins videos and damn does he add sins for literally everything now.
Two words, Jeremy. Toon Force. You hit the nail on the head when you "Roger Rabbit, but without actually acknowledging that toons exist." The mask has the same kind of overpowered wacky antic abilities as any old time cartoon character.
With a sprinkle of Loki
The sin off for Surf Ninjas makes me so ridiculously happy. No one I talk to ever seems to have heard of it and it's such a fun movie
as a Turtles fan growing up, was stoked to see Keno in his own movie, too bad he fell off after that.
Surf ninjas.. so bad it is good.
😂😂😂😂 you lucky dawg.
This was one of my fav movies from childhood... Every time it used to run on TV it was movie night even on school nights...
I remember watching this movie with my friend for the first time, we had such a good time laughing at this all night.
@@NightSide139 Yeah there was enough of Stanley still in control to keep from killing people. You saw a huge difference when Dorian had the Mask on.
And the thugs he met on the street... having a monkey come out of your butt probably causes some permanent damage :)
@@ericrosen6626 That was Bruce Almighty, not The Mask.
2:27 Woah he missed one! I don't recall Jeremy letting the bomb of F go through without even an attempt at editing it, at least on the main channel.
Holy crap! I hope he notices it.
😲
He should be OK, he's out of the 90 second scan range, will take some reports to get it flagged for an age check.
I'm not sure whether that's the joke given the subject matter of the sin.
“Is he omnipotent?” Short answer yes. Reasoning is the mask is basically a reality breaking god being that brings out primal desires
Yeah he kept asking if he's god and I'm like kinda. He's like Deadpool
Way more godlike than Deadpool thoigh
@@goldenboyadrokk1742 oh definitely 👌🏾
Their death battle is hilarious
@@lawofthedingle Exactly. When he asked if the Mask is like the Green Lantern, I said no, he's Deadpool.
The newspaper bit 😂😂 I had to pause “these are the same, these are the same”
I loved this movie when I was younger, and I loved Richard Jeni's standup.
Kinda like Freakazoid....was it?...but Freakazoid is more like Deadpool and The Mask's kid cause he doesn't give two shids
13:37 actually yes, they cut the printing press scene by a few minutes, because it progressed into Dorian violently murdering the reporter by throwing her into the printing press, so a little bit of dialogue ended up getting removed in the edit.
I always wondered if she got away with selling him out. That just didn't sit right.
@The_Mecha_Archivist He did do Ace Ventura 2, which is kind of what made him turn down more sequels in the first place, but there was also Dumb and Dumber To
That sinning in sync with the main character hitting the bell at the car shop was quite delightful
Jim Carrey is a national treasure! NO ONE could EVER be like him.
Signs the CinemaSins guy is a dog lover: I present, this video. :)
Also, thank you for bringing back the audio outtakes. :)
I'm impressed that you got Matthew McConaughey to narrate the 33rd sin.
Also worth mentioning that they made another one of these movies where they explained that the mask once belonged to Loki so wearing it does basically make you a trickster God.
Alright, alright, Alright!
They also kind of explain that it’s lokis mask here as well.
We.dont talk about that movie....
"Is he god?!" .... Yes. Yes he is. Loki's mask, Loki's power. Loki GOD of mischief.
Exactly what I came to say… For all intents and purposes he _is_ a god. Most of the time I don’t mind ridiculous sins, but questioning a fact over and over gets pretty grating.
Yup, God of mischief and BOY
Not the god but a god
Groundhog Day
Also, the green face. Jim Carrey played the Grinch. It really did foreshadow his movie career, never realized that until watching this.
Green: also the Riddler.
@@JDizaster That's worth 3 sins.
1 for the Grinch
2 for the Riddler
The most realistic and heartwarming part is the love and loyalty Milo had for his dumb owner. He didn't deserve Milo. Milo was too GOOD a boy!
I will admit I had to pause the pig Latin to puzzle it out.
And the sin off for surf ninjas? 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 well played sir.
Jim Carrey better get a sin off for his performance in this film. Especially at the "SSSSmokin!" part.
He does not. Jeremy missed SO many opportunities to take off sins for Jim Carrey's funny moments. He only took off one sin for Jim Carrey's physical comedy
@@Xgendude14 and surf ninja poster
Fun fact: "Ssssmokin!" was improvised by Jim as the original line was "Ssnazzy!"
He made the right choice.
I still love how Jim Carrey played three characters associated with the color green, and yet this is the only one that was actually in a good movie.
There's the mask, Grinch, who else did he play that's green?

Yesssss
I thought it would never come. The movie is one of the best in the genre.
"The thing doesn't do the thing it usually does cliche!"
Doesn't the mask only work at night?
Love this movie but this is still hilarious.
That was explained exactly after Stanley tries. "OK, you said Loki is a night god. Maybe it only works at night."

That's what makes the scene so funny. You don't know that fact about the mask until he puts it on, making it hilariously unexpected when it doesn't work.

I purposely skipped this movie in the Jim Carrey catalog. I felt that with all of it's praise and hype it wouldn't live up to my expectations. Especially having had been a huge fan in the 90's.
@@mattmarzula damn, i watched every Jim Carrey movie growing up, this one is (imo) one of Carreys funnest films...seeing him just go ape shit overacting as the mask was a delight for me.

A sin for efficiency, on introducing the plot and characters during the opening credits. Usually it's sins for taking too long with the opening credits and getting to the point of the movie.
I love the consistency of this channel, it's so arbitrary, unreasonable, petty and smeggy. Delightful. (because it's honest about all of those things, and more)
😂back to back videos where an F bomb slipped, I love it
I love the respect given to Royal Crown Revue. Daniel Glass is one of the most underappreciated drummers in the world.
2:28 “How do you f*ck this up?” I don’t know if that was an intentional f-up that they didn’t beep Jeremy saying fuck, but that’s hilarious hearing it uncensored.
The Mask is actually based on a rather gory and violent toon comic about Stanley using the comical powers of the Mask to wreak terrifying vigilante justice and do whatever he wants with his powers
"Is he God?"
The movie doesnt do as well to show it as the comics do but basically yes. He can do whatever he feels like doing
They do literally mention "It's the mask of Loki, Norse god." So I think, yes, he's god.
THE MISSED BLEEPED F BOMB MADE MY WHOLE DAY😭😭😭
