Fun Fact - all of the animation for this game was done by Cartoonland, a Bay Area studio that was only active in the 80's/90's - they animated such characters as the Trix Rabbit and Snap Crackle and Pop, did some award-winning ads for Levi's jeans, and helped out, uncredited, on the 2D FX animation for Nightmare Before Christmas, The Rocketeer, Ghostbusters 2, and Willow!
That is a fun fact.

What’s really crazy to me is that there must be such amazing animations for Luke and Palpatine killing people, but most players would never ever see them. Would love to see Luke take down the AT-ST or Darth, or Palpatine kill Leia or Yoda.
@@elsiebartlett6808 Can be done, but you've got to either play against a monkey, or be a master at out thinking your opponent.
You'll notice Arin's progress by the natural way he says "knight" instead of "horsey" (granted, this board in particular doesn't help, but it's something)
Also using the term "pin", it was a pleasant suprise

He got worse, he is supposed to reach "Horse" for IM title and "Pony" for GM.
But yes actually him saying "pin" surprised me, he also played very well excluding the multiple exchanges in the mid-game which I believe he thought leaves him down the exchange but actually left him down a full rook.
That he then managed to fool Dan into losing a piece easily overshadows how he blundered his bishop just to give a random check.
But also Dan missed a lot of tactics so maybe it's just Dan getting worse.

Honestly, I think this shows that all Arin needs to get over the early-onset freakout that Chess brings is a bit- that Palpatine stuff really kept his head in the game, surprisingly enough

This is a game I had as a super small child. I didn't know chess, and I didn't know Star Wars. I would move the pieces until one of them actually would move and would watch the cutscenes in awe. I still have the disc 25 years later even though it doesnt work on modern PCs. This brought back so many memories of being a child. Thanks Grumps

Some reason it makes me really happy to imagine some artist in 1993 working on C3PO's platinum dumpie in a cube far far away. I can't imagine anyone thought Star Wars chess would be huge, but this game feels very lovingly crafted, especially with the animations.
I forgot how funny the death scenes in this game are XD. The best ones are the ones where it's clear the animators were like 'Uh, how would this character kill this one?' '...They probably wouldn't be able to.' 'Well, you gotta figure out something!' 'Okay, okay, fine.'. And just threw something together lol.

The creators of this game unintentionally predicting that Yoda is actually a war criminal was really unexpected

Just did the math, and I'm pretty sure there are 72 different animations in this game. That's 6x6 for six different piece types in any combination, then x2 to account for the fact that each pairing can have either a dark side aggressor or light side aggressor. That's a lot of work!
Does that math include walking animations? Those probably change aswell depending on direction of travel
But also subtract two, since it's impossible for a King to capture another King (unless this game allows you to not save yourself from check, in which case yeah it would be possible)

I would love to see that. I think it might be a way for Arin to finally win: if neither of them have any idea what’s going on, then it’ll be a level playing field. I think the only other way would be to somehow make a chess horror game.

That is literally the worst possible angle to play chess.
They used over a hundred soviet scientists working 17,000 collective hours to find this most impractical angle.
A lot of the early chess video games had the isometric angle as the default, probably because it's the most similar to playing over the board. However, just like this one, the designers knew that top-down was much clearer so it was included as a setting, but realism has always had more importance than practicality to publishers.
Well that was a bit more violent than I was expecting. Wonder how many kids got traumatized by Chewie getting incinerated or the Storm Trooper offing himself.

Arin actually didn't go (drastically) negative the whole game. Proud of him... I mean, at 32:17 he did give up that pawn for no reason basically losing the game, but he played pretty solidly up until that point.
This game putting in the effort to give a unique animation for each character killing another is actually pretty impressive.
I will never get tired of Palpatine and Yoda voices. Love it so much

My favorite thing about this game is that it's title is "Software Toolworks' Star Wars Chess," so if you look at the box art, especially on the sega CD version, it's a cramped wall of text with "Star Wars" about equal size to everything else. It's horrible, I love it.
What's crazy about Dan's goof up, is that I knew it was the wrong play because I would do that play and I'm bad at Chess 🤣
Edit: It just hit me that Arin was playing pretty good the whole time and didn't freak out all that much if at all. Love to see the progress Arin!

Arin, my advice, as somewhat of a chess lover, is to learn to utilize your knights more. They have incredible mobility which can sometimes surprise average-inexperienced players with moves they didn’t quite expect. For example, here at 16:03, if you had instead moved your sandtrooper over to the left 2 and down 1, it would have threatened Dan’s 3PO, which could have seriously spoiled his queen-taking that he planned and executed. Great game, love you guys!
