Beat your opponent with quick counter topspins (with Paul Drinkhall)

  • In this video, pro player Paul Drinkhall, shows how to do a forehand counter-topspin.
    This is a shot played close to the table. Your opponent plays a looping attack. Instead of blocking, you play a short counter-topspin attack instead.
    The result? Usually a clean winner. The ball goes past your opponent before he or she even realises.
    This is an advanced shot. It requires a lot of practice and skill to do consistently
    In the video, Paul explains how to execute the shot, how to practice and when to use the shot in matches.

    This is actually one of the most important things in advanced table tennis. If you are playing against an advanced player, blocking the ball is a very a high risk because he will finish the point with a loop, unless you made a very well placed block. You will never be able to compete in advanced table tennis without learning the counter topspin.

      So true. I've always considered this a high control shot. Though it looks simple, doing it well is tough!

    Thank you very much, Paul Drinkhall and Tom Lodziak!!! A very necessary and important lesson. It would be nice if you did a lesson on how to hit the ball correctly after bouncing off long spikes.

    Hi Tom, love your videos. When your opponent top spins, what makes you decide between counter-topping and chopping?

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your playing style. If you are defensive and like to chop, then chopping is an option. For me, I would block or try to counter topspin, as this suits my playing style. If I tried to chop, it would probably go horribly wrong.

    • @percevalzinzin5983
      @percevalzinzin5983 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomLodziak Gotcha! Thanks. So it's mostly a personal choice. I imagine other persons would also have a complete palette of chops/blocks/countertops and use them opportunistically depending on the context...

      The key for slow and spinny topspins, is to close bat angle more and contact the ball soon after the bounce.

      Maybe it's just me but if Tom has professional Paul Drinkhall in for filming, I'd prefer he go over some shots & tactics. Something more advanced we can learn from him. It'd be a waste of a valuable resource to ask a pro something like "how do you hold a bat?" For shakehand grip, click here. bit.ly/2MFojoG

      This shot will definitely work against those kinds of topspins. You just need to close bat angle a bit more and contact quite soon after the bounce.

      Nope, this is actually a great video if you want to do a NEAR TABLE counter top spin to surprise your opponent. But you are right that people should be aware that counter topspins are more often used away from the table (as can be seen in most professional matches).
