  • Latanoprost or Xalatan treats both elevated pressure inside the eye and glaucoma. This very widely prescribed medicine favorably alters the course of intraocular hypertension and slows or halts progression of vision changes much more dramatically than its predecessor timolol.
Unfortunately in its early stages glaucoma remains totally symptom free. By the time an individual notices vision change, considerable irreversible damage exists in nerve cells at the back of the eye. Glaucoma tends to strike those over age 50. This is one of the reasons periodic eye examinations become increasingly important with aging.
Elevated pressure within the eye results from resistance to the outflow of aqueous humor manufactured by the ciliary body. This results in intraocular pressure in excess of 21 mm which jeopardizes the health of tissues of the optic nerve. Used only once each evening Latanoprost generally suffices to restore normal pressure. When necessary a second or third medicine may be added.
Opened containers of Latanoprost should be stored at room temperature. After 6 weeks any remaining material should be discarded. Latanoprost tends to degrade relatively quickly especially if exposed to excessive heat or sunlight.
Contact lenses should be removed prior to applying Latanoprost and not replaced for at least 15 minutes afterward. Side effects related to Latanoprost are limited to local irritation and redness. Some darkening of the iris may occur along with pigmentation of the eyelid skin and notable eyelash growth.

I also had no idea it needed to be in the fridge until opened for use. That info was way down on the last page of information sheet. Should be in large print on the bottle. This was not really a problem for me until I put my Latanoprost on mail order. Then I had three bottles in the cupboard at room temp.

I’ve been using Latanoprost for a year now. It has lowered the pressure in both eyes. My doc says there’s a lot of drugs for high pressure. I’m 67, & I’m not too worried about developing glaucoma. I hope you do well with the medicine 🙂

Thank you for this insight. I started to say it opened my eyes to another thing to look out for but it's a terrible play on the words. I really do appreciate the information as I have "big" eyelids and will be observant on what they are doing.
So far to good with the Latanoprost. This video was more helpful than the doctor or the pharmacist.

I had an eye injury about 20 years old, a pair of pliers flew into my eye and ruptured my eye right at the bottom of the irus which then made me lose my irus and lens. My eye was sewed back together and the doctor put in a fake lens. I also have a buckle around the outside of the eye because of a retinal tear. For years my eye pression was around 20 and then I stopped the eye drops (dorzolamide/timolol) because I wanted to get pregnant and worried about the effects of the drops to the fetus.. It took 9 years to get pregnant... And then after giving birth 2023 I got pregnant again.. So now I have a 1 year old and 4 month old... At 2 months postpartum I noticed a slight eye pressure pain and so closed my good eye and knoticed my bad eye had very little vision. My good eye over rules my bad eye and so I dont know 100% if this extreme loss in vision was sudden or not, but I feel I would have noticed if it was.
My doctor prescribed the dorzolamide timolol along with alphagan and my heart felt like it was going to explode.. so then i was put on latanoprost and eye pressured was checked last week (after only 1 week of use) and eye pressure went from 44 to 55. What would have made my eye go up in pressure? In the video it was said to not use after cataract surgery (if i heard this correctly)... What is the reason not to use it? I have a fake lense so would I be in that category of shouldnt be taking? I worry bc my pressure greatly increased and then my doctor wants me to switch to Rockalan eye drops which still have latanoprost in it. Im also taking Dorzolamide which I feel is helping.. been on Dorzolamide for this past week, along with the Latanoprost and my pressure is back down to 44. But idk if the latanoprost is working against the dorzolamide and my pressure would be lower if i used just the dorzolamide.

Terrible heart palpitations and chest pain after 1st use. Used them for about 6 months cause even after I told doc the side effect he said keep taking them. I got the heart palpitations well here it is a couple years later and still having intermittant heart palpulations. They want you to take it at night hoping you can sleep and not notice your heart beating out of your chest, thats kinda hard to do. Can you imagine they give these drops to small dogs, must kill them fast.
