Let's also not forget what rent actually is: it is the perfect manifestation of rentier capitalism. People and corporations with surplus money, buy real estate and then proceed to take money that other people earn by charging them for what should be their human right to have - decent housing. This is literally stealing the hard earned money of workers to pad the pockets of the owner class. And by owners I include everyone from the landlords of one or two rental properties to the corporate landlords who own hunderds to thousands of units to the scumbag slumlords. They're all the same - capitalist pigs.

They just approved the development of 2 skyscrapers in Halifax, which will require 110 comparatively affordable housing units to be demolished (many with existing tenants). I feel like the people occupying these new rental units/condos must have high paying remote jobs from another province or something.. there are only so many jobs in HRM that can allow a person to live in these new units, and at this rate our population is probably outnumbering available jobs.

Fairly comprehensive. I would add the fact that rent controls have been effective in stemming financialization. Provinces with rent controls also happen to be those with the lowest shares of rental housing owned by REITs.
I was initially scared this video would follow the recommendations of that “expert” committee which included a certain dal prof arguing against rent control. Thankfully not.

Does your t-shirt say Tara Naki?! Is that after the street in Coke Harbour?

The t-shirt refers to Taranaki, New Zealand. But I would definitely buy a Taranaki Drive tee if it exists

Didn't Sweeden face a recent government collapse about this?

“Collapse” would be an exaggeration: It faced a no-confidence vote after attempting to remove rent control.

Very comprehensive and appreciate the time it took to make this video. I have two points. First, when there is a 2% cap on rental increase when Halifax at the same time increases property tax 10% seems draconian. Also, insurance is about about 30% in the last year while lumber prices that have skyrocketed albeit settling down and inflation of goods puts large pressure on owners. So if the government caps rents at 2% they should be capping everything else I mention at 2%. If I can’t pay my mortgage on an investment because my revenues are capped while expenses are not then the bank will take my property. I support rental control if the property was designed for that purpose, but to extend that across the board for other rentals makes no sense.
