Actually, do wear Birkenstocks and dad sandals. We wear them every day during the summer because they are comfy and easy and stylish (especially in the scandi countries). If you are going to be walking a lot they are great! We bike and walk a lot every day, so wearing something that is comfy is key. I can't go outside without seeing Birken or dad sandals. Also, Europe is huge and there is a big difference in what to wear in e.g. Denmark vs in Spain. So try and research the country you are going to and what are the norms there.
Totally agree with you on doing research before heading away - every country is different and these were more general guidelines. I personally am not a fan of the dad sandal trend (and never got on board with birkenstocks though I've seen people make them look very cool), but ultimately if you feel comfortable and great when you wear a certain type of shoe, then it's your prerogative to wear them for sure! :)
We wear Birkenstock all around Europe in summer (obviously without socks) because our cities are ones where we walk a lot so you will blend just fine if you do too.
I feel like in some ways this may ultimately come down to location. Here in Sydney, you don't see loads of people wearing birkenstocks (particularly in the city), they're more of a beach thing. Probably worth noting that I may also have a slight bit of bias as they aren't my favourite. That being said, I've seen loads of people pull them off (and very well) so definitely take that tip with a grain of salt. Tevas on the other hand - I can't deal! Velcro shoes, noooo...!!! XD
Tevas are definitely a no-go ;) Here in Paris many women wear Birkenstock with nice summer dresses. At the end of the day, it's not about what you wear but how you behave. We spot tourists from miles away especially Anglo Saxon ones because they speak loud!!!
Also in Holland we wear birkenstocks all summer! Not only on the beach, Than especially more flip-flops because water isn't that good for birkenstock's!
Thanks lovely! I will have a summer 10X10 coming which features some more modest pieces (midi skirts and dress) so might give you a few ideas. I think I’ve jotted it down to go up in a week and a half or so xx
In Paris, we do wear flashy logos haha. And I’d be lost without my designer bag ! I do feel like, in Paris or Italy it’s kind of the norm. But I do reckon, big designer shopping bags can make you a walking target. Though, in department stores, most of people coming from Asia come with rolling suitcased but everyone knows that they are tourists. We, in Paris, don’t do that. If you buy tons of expensive things, call an Uber right after your purchase so you can feel secure. Also, in France, if you dress like a Rouje girl, honest to god, you might be too much of a cliché. It’s all about the attitude, not the clothes. Be polite, do not talk too loud and try to blend by watching every day people for a couple of hours.
Ultimately I think you do what makes you feel comfortable - but yes those are great tips in terms of blending in (attitude is such a big thing!) and calling an Uber after luxury shopping too - best way to avoid getting into a sticky situation x
Sure! This is the one I bought: www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/ona-capri-leather-tote-bag It's great because it doesn't look like a camera bag though I will say two things; the price has gone up substantially since I bought it, and I personally don't think that the quality matched the price that even I paid. I've still got it but now would just rather carry a smaller camera or I just pop it into a small canvas tote bag and carry that on my shoulder so it's concealed.
As a photographer, I agree to carry a backpack that doesn't look like a camera backpack. I do suggest trying to find one that you can only access the camera from the back - it makes it harder for theft. I am a street/documentary photographer so it's kind of hard not having my camera on me at all times. I will always stick out - LOL. I do suggest shoulder straps vs neck strap as it's comfier for long days on the street. :)
For when we went to NZ, we did a lot of hiking so I knew I wanted a backpack - I ended up getting a Kanken and then putting the camera case in it. Dual zippers and the way it fit it would have been hard for anyone to just slyly pull it out (you'd have to seriously tug as it fit very snug!). Might be worth looking into if you're on the hunt for an alternative to what you have xx
I live in one of the most touristy neighborhoods on the planet and I would say a pick pocket will always know if you're a tourist. It's just in your demeanor. I've taken my LV backpack all over the world with me and have had zero issues thus far. But, I did have a conversation with a lady in Paris about how her and her husband were being stalked and she thought it was because of her LV bag and bought a cheap cross body to use for the rest of her trip.
I'd say that's definitely going to be part of it too, for sure, though sometimes it comes down to luck too. My mum and stepdad lived in Greece (both being born there and fluent in the language), and my stepfather was pickpocketed more than once while at places like the supermarket. I always feel like it's better to be safe than sorry, though ultimately as a traveller you'll know what you feel most comfortable with and if that's travelling with your LV backpack, then definitely go for it!
I’m off to Europe (late August) and would love a packing inspo video. The challenges of packing for multiple climates/ locations. (Example, I’m heading to Paris, south of France for a wedding, then up to Norway & London. Literally have a spreadsheet going to maximize outfits/ minimize packing. 😂)
Weather in Norway can change quite quickly and vary a lot, so make sure you check the forecast closely. Also if you are traveling within Norway the different areas can get very different weather. Today we have 20 C in Oslo and snow in some of the mountains. 🤷♀️
Mmmmartie thank you! I am traveling to Alesund in early September & very excited. Planning on layers (jeans & t/shirt, with knits/ puffer jacket) and a trusty rain coat in my bag at all times.
mademoiselle I’m on the hunt for comfortable shoe options to walk all day around a city 🌃 I have Birkenstock’s but don’t know if I can pull them off in Paris, of all places!
We just came back from a trip to Montréal and to blend in you wear athleisure, specially lululemon hahaha. I love my birkenstocks and backpacks. We're planning a trip to Italy next spring and I'm worried about pick pockets. We felt so safe in Canada : ) thanks for the tips. If you're in México, we'll recognize tourists but we love them, specially when they learn basic words, so no worries.
I've seen people get pickpocketed in Rome (my grandparents had stuff stolen from the boot of their car too) but I think as long as you're aware of the tricks, you should be fine. Just make sure your bag zips up and keep it in front of you :) Also if you're going with any male friends/companions, I'd suggest they keep their wallet in their front pocket too x
Hehe I totally remember that - I was on the fence for a while and ultimately decided they weren't for me. I've seen some girls make them look very cool but I can't help but associate them with tourist dads on holiday lol xx
Thanks, Jamie! Great advice. I'd like to add my pet peeve to the list... beachwear in the city 😱 Sheer sarong wraps and "barely there" swim suit covers look best on the beach, if not for modesty reasons, then just out of respect for the people living in the resort city ⛱⛱⛱🌞☀🌞 Have a great day, and I hope Nigel's cameo is coming up soon 💕 N
I've heard of this before but thankfully never witnessed it - same goes for me too. There's this great ad for Tip Top (ice cream brand) where a guy is wearing speedos. And it goes, TOGS TOGS TOGS TOGS TOGS TOGS UNDIES. It's only swimwear if you can see the beach haha. It might be on YT actually - quite a great campaign! And you too Natalya xx
The title of this video made me laugh haha It's such a great idea to ask for a plain bag so it's not obvious what you've purchased. I've never thought of that! I also get nervous with backpacks so I like something I can keep an eye (or a hand) on when traveling.
Hahaha! A lot of the tips for me are definitely centred around not being a target for pickpockets. I've seen it happen and it's happened to people I know, so I'm very cautious! x

FINALLY!!!!!!! Someone says that about flip flops, dad sandals and Birkenstock.... The ugliest and laziest shoes on earth.
Hahaha I'm not a fan for sure ! x
Understand the bias against birks, but those shoes have been a lifesaver for me! Wearing them regularly have made my fasciitis significantly better.
Totally agree on flip flops!
I see. Sorry for your problem. For something like that of course comfortable shoes are the best solution.
Wonderful video👍 but maybe pack flip flops for hotels' bathroom.
A great tip especially if you’re staying in a hostel! A lot of people wear them to the beach too I know (though I haven’t personally owned a pair in years - always just go with a classic pair of sandals 🙈🙈🙈)

But then again fanny packs/bum bags are trending again... so who am I to talk lol 😬 have a lovely hump day Miss J!
Hahaha that's so true! Same to you xx
oh my god why would you use an iPad as a camera though??? Why would you even bring an iPad on holiday?? People baffle me haha
JMin37 maybe it’s an older generation thing?? 🤷🏻♀️ who knows 😬 but it certainly is a touristy thing to do!

I
Those are great tips! Varsity sweaters aren’t a big thing here in AU/NZ but I totally agree they would make you stick out like a sore thumb!
Avoid cargo pants.
Yes that’s a great one! God I haven’t seen a pair of cargos in years!! 🙈🙈
