    This video came with an additional tip: I never thought to use dice as health/sanity/resource counters instead of the standard tokens. Brilliant idea! I'm always looking for ways to cut down on table clutter whenever possible.

    Started AH with my wife last week. Love it!!! So much to take in and learn and in truth it can be quite overwhelming. Your channel has been excellent in our enjoyment of this game. The story pulled us in right from the get go. Played the first campaign on standard as we didn't want to feel we set it too low :) Had a great time. Thanks for the vids. Blessings from Australia

    This Video is exactly what I needed to see. I'm a role player primarily but I enjoy co-op board games...the tip "Play for the Story" is right where I "live". 🤓

    You are my new favorite channel for AH:TCG! Such great videos for beginners - so much good content that goes beyond the initial tutorial!

    Reframing the thought process to embrace losing, or at least not winning, was big for me. On some level, I think it might help break people out of a perfectionist mindset.

    Great video. Very insightful and well made. Justin's autofail rant at the end really tied it back to all other PBG Arkham content.

    7:20 resonates with all of us.
    Me: I have a plan. It's perfect!
    Chaos bag: Here's the autofail.
    Me: Well, at least let me evade so I can move and resign.
    Chaos bag: Guess what

      The autofail is hands-down the shittiest part of the design.

    Great advice. Good music, but I like when your visuals match what you are talking about. Generic gameplay doesn't reinforce your point as well.

    Here here about 'Easy!' I have played 80 games of Arkham, but I still play on Easy because I typically prefer it, especially on first runs. If we're going in blind, we want to give ourselves the best chance of seeing as much of the story as possible. Sure, we wouldn't play 'Night of the Zealot' on easy anymore, but when we started Innsmouth for the first time? Absolutely.
    On Healing - I agree completely. Healing cards lost their spot in our decks as we got more experienced. However, I've recently come around on healing if you have a super-efficient healer like Carolyn and a very horror-happy campaign. I do think beginners are better off learning to use allies and assets as soaks, though, because that's generally the better strategy.

    • @christopherlarter4386
      @christopherlarter4386 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the key to having healing be effective is to be minimalist in healing with cards that allow you to search for a heal when its totally necessary. As a general rule though the only healing I will typically put in a deck is thermos in the event I've taken multiple traumas, using backpack in a deck helps you grab things you need including but not limited to thermos

    • @lazulin
      @lazulin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christopherlarter4386 Hallowed mirror is my favorite. Guardians are also likely to actually need the healing, which makes it especially good. Can be hard to draw without search cards though.

      @@lazulin its a helpful card or a decent second accessory with relic hunter
      I think you can make room for it in a deck if you've taken a couple traumas especially if it's mental trauma

    What game would you reccomend me? AH 2nd ed or 3rd ed or eldritch horror? I prefer boardgame over cardgame but i want to have big replayability and i don't want to spend huge amount of money so the base has to be good enough for a long run. A nice story and theme would be big bonus.

    As someone just starting, should I just get the core game or are there some must have expansions?

    • @PlayingBoardGames
      @PlayingBoardGames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We recommend players start with the core, give it a few plays to see if they like it. Then, you could look at getting The Dunwich Legacy expansions.

    The big thing that keeps me away is the extra card packs. As a new player how vital are they? Without them what am I missing?

    • @nickkowalski5209
      @nickkowalski5209 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically everything, unfortunately. New packs contain new campaigns and scenarios, new player cards (assets etc.), new characters to play with and new game mechanics as well. Core set is really just a demo version of the game, designed to teach you the core mechanics. And only for 1-2 players, you'll need more cards if you want more than two decks (booo ff games). So yeah, it's a bit of a bummer and the game is expensive in this sense. But at the same time the core is perfectly fine if you just want to try out the game, and provides almost enough to decide if you want to delve deeper

    • @anaphysik
      @anaphysik 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      All that you really *need* to enjoy what the game has to offer is the core and a *single, full* campaign cycle. (by 'the core' I mean either the newly-released 'Revised Core' *or* 2 of the old-Core-sets, which contain only single copies of the class cards; the Revised Core is basically 2 old-cores in one box.)
      That's a significant investment on its own (a full cycle (campaign box + its 6 packs) is ~$120 USD), much larger than a generic boardgame, but it provides a full 8-part campaign to play through again and again, 10 investigators to mix and match in different teams, and a sizable collection of player cards from which to build different decks for those investigators. It's a board game that gets played over multiple game nights/weeks and offers a lot of variability/story/challenge/co-op-fun regardless of whether it's first-play or fiftieth. Also, since it is a team game, that investment could be made by a group of friends rather than a single person.
      Beyond that first cycle, what the other cycles/packs offer is kind of 'more of the same' -- another full campaign, more investigators, more player cards. After a certain point there's greatly diminishing returns from getting more player cards (there are currently so many in existence that probably almost no one with a 'full collection' has actually played with every player card they own) -- the internet tends to breed a 'you gotta get this card from this pack!' mentality but the truth is that there are plenty of great and fun cards that do the job just fine in any of the full cycles, and you don't need more beyond that to have fun. Investigators are somewhat similar, although they offer more variability, since even without extra player cards they change the way you think about current cards you owns.
      The extra 8-part campaigns on the other hand offer a lot more value as 'expansions', since they're essentially additional board games to play. The company is going to be changing how they release 'packs' in the future, btw, moving to releasing things as 'campaign in a single box' and 'single box full of extra investigators/player cards' (instead of the whole box+6packs scenarios-and-player-cards-mixed-together weirdness) so *eventually* it will be easy to pick up campaigns just like picking up a normal board game.

      Considering this is for the absolute new players with no clue what’s going on, rather than relatively new players with a bit of an idea of what’s going on, I think it’s for the best. Having a bunch of in-jokes is great for the long term viewers, but a straight faced explanation is better for people trying to get their bearings.
