Hello and Greetings from Oamaru Sth island New Zealand Dan.
I see you are in Taishan.
My late father was Gin King Toon from Taishan village Canton i think there's i little part which in Chinese its pronounced "Dahn gaun toin'' (Elephant neck village) which my late mother use to say. My mother was a Ng and her mother was a Lee from that region too before she went to Hong Kong in late 1950's then married my dad here in 1963. It always mentioned the various families villages like Ng, Lee, Yee, Wong were only like 5, 6, 7 miles apart from each other but dont communicate much with each other so i always wonder how mothers parents like Ng & Lee met?. My Dad was given open passage to Californias in 1923 as a 13 year old but ended up opting for Sydney Australia then changed his mind again comming to N.Z. apparently theres lots of Gins in Broome Australia of all places. My mother's dad was Chinese government attache in 1930's Newark NJ who ended up being poisoned in China after his return.
Dad said the Hakka people came down from the north of China then raped the woman in Taishan, I remember only meeting one Hakka in our community here which dad got on with well but always cautious of him.. Cheers C
    Carl.

Hi Carl. Greetings to you in New Zealand. Actually I was in Hoiping (Kaiping in Mandarin) which is a short bus ride from Taishan. Our dialect is often mistaken for your dialect because they are so so similar. Our dialects belong to the Four Counties dialect known as "Sai Yip". The other 2 counties are known as Yinping (Enping) and Sunwui (Xinhui).
Thanks for sharing your family history. It's really interesting. Just wondering why your mother's dad was poisoned after his return to China?
What kind of work or trade did the Gin clan members do in China? From what I heard, people from one clan would go to one part of the world and other members would follow based on their occupations in China. I'm not sure if that happened in New Zealand but in some parts of California that kind of pattern happened. Sorry I can't recall the details but somebody did some research on migration patterns.
I'm always interested in Chinese migration from southern China to all parts of the world. I'm certainly interested in Chinese people's lives growing up in Australia and New Zealand. My mom had an offer of marriage to go Australia. I often wonder how different her life would have been if she went to Australia instead of Canada. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and checking out my video. Much appreciated. Dan

I visited Hoiping , Chikan in 11/2018 , my place of birth 7 decades ago. My grandparents built this tall 6 story brick tower. I was disappointed to see the town was shut down for renovation. Hope to revisited it soon!

I was there in January 2019 and it was mostly closed. I went in through the workers gate. I have some videos I need to post. I think the town might be open again but I haven't been able to confirm it yet. I think I will be shocked to see the changes because it will lose some of its authenticity. I hope you do revisit it soon. I'm looking forward to visit too. Thanks for checking out my video. Take care and stay safe.

Thanks for the tour. I know people from the Kaiping region; genuine and hardworking as with most Chinese. Hard to understand the local dialect like Taishan.
Remember it is pure sesame paste unlike the diluted with black rice and refined sugar they sell in the packages at supermarkets across Canada. The quality of freshly grown asian produce wherever it is imported from, have diminished considerably post pandemic and prices are absurd.

You're very welcome. Thanks for the tip about sesame paste. I don't buy it a lot but I'll remember what you said. Thanks for checking out my video.

OH,,, MAN,, this is my hometown----chikan,, very nice video,,
BUT I am hardly able to recognize all of it,, some ,, there are two big last name by that town---- seto and guan,,, seto last name residents mostly reside along side the TANJIANG river,, Guan last name folks reside a bit further north from the river but close to the hwy...
IT seems this is an old video recording?? how many years old?? I thought that Chikan town has been sold and rebuilt in a fresh scene,,,I never gone back since 2019,,, YES,, I love hometown food,,, far better than the food in san francisco,,, I guess that you have better food in vancouver,,

The footage in this video was made before Chikan was closed. I have not gone back since the Pandemic but I heard that Chikan has since reopened.
The food in Vancouver was pretty good but since the Pandemic a lot of restaurants have not been as good and some have closed down. Thanks for checking out my video.

My grandparents were from hoiping they finally got to visit last summer from what I’ve heard from my parent my grandparents they were poor my grandpa and his family had a house where they lived although having a house they had no money due to rich people stealing all the money from all people who had houses, so my grandpa all he could do was fish and eat fish and rice and vegetables 😢. Also he could only fish there, no food he could buy. That’s what my grandpa did even when he married my grandma and until my grandpas sister brought my grandpa’s siblings and my grandparents and my oldest aunt and my dad to Hong Kong until they got to America. Seemingly now knowing my grandparents story now I know why my grandpa so rowdy. That’s my grandparents story.
Also I loved the video I hope to visit here to see my what my lineage is from, both my parents are from hoiping so nice to see videos about this place.

If you're coming from Hong Kong, you can buy a ticket which covers taking you by van to cross the China border. Be sure you get the proper visa to visit China. The van will take you to Zuhai transfer station. From there you take a bus to Hoiping or Toisan. I did it this way on my trip to Sunhui in 2019. You can take a public bus to Zuhai transfer station which is cheaper but slower and progkokbably more tiresome.
I have also taken a bus from Mongkok directly to Hoiping but I'm not sure if that service is still running.
I also hear there is a fast train that goes there now from Hong Kong. I might try it next time I travel there.
I hope you get a chance to travel to your hometown.

Compare to other progressive places in China Kaiping is still very backward, hope Kaiping can catch up. I would put it on my wish list when i I visit China, my father is from Taishan.

From what I heard, there were some factories and businesses that were set up, but since closed. Overall, as you say, it is still very backward. I hope you have a good trip when you visit Taishan and surrounding areas. Thanks for checking pout my video.

Chikan on the video was no longer existed, they bought up the whole town and converted it to be a tourist area. They made up a story about the town and rebuilded it according to the story. The old town I went there many times. I will be going there in October 2024, my ancestral home was near by. I will not be going to the new fake town which is far from the real old town, I don't have any interest at all.

It's sad what has happened there. I have seen some videos and as you say has converted into a tourist area. I know if I go back there I will be in shock. Thanks for checking out my video.
