The SS-E71,like the slightly larger and more rare SS-E70 and the older SS-2070,are pretty decent "japanese" budget speakers from the late seventies/early eighties. They all were constructed and build by Wega in Fellbach/Germany with OEM-chassis made by Seas. Typical compact 3-ways of their time with a too tiny enclosure for the bass that leads to a Qt above 1 and a accentuation of upper bass region without deep bass. Minimal crossover with 6dB filter,except for the 19mm tweeter which has a 12dB filter. Personaly i have to pairs of those and experimented a bit to get a more linear frequency response out of them. Firstly i changed the lytic caps in the filters for the midtone driver (15µF) and the tweeter (2,7µF) against 100V MKT and MKPs. Than i also replaced the inductor in low pass filter against one with lower Rdc. The inductor in the low pass is one with a ferrit core. Those age. Dont ask me why,but changing them with a fresh one of the same value helps to better the bass response all the time. Than i played around with the dampening of the enclosure which originally consists of 4 matts of fiberclass positioned on the inner walls of the enclosure. For my situation a mix of one matt fiberglass and three and a half matt "sonofil" per box did the trick. After all was done the speaker is now more pleasant to listen to. The sharp hights are gone without lost of detail and the bass is tight and a notch deeper than before without the tendency of boomyness it had before. The midtone is also clearer and seems a bit more detailed. Before i had often the impression that the mids were recessed and details got swalloed somehow.That is gone. So for a investment of under150 bucks (2 speakers plus parts) and a bit DIY i got fatiguefree listening to pair of speakers that fit perfectly in smaller rooms and are not offended if mounted near a wall.

the e70 was not a budget speaker at all. they were very expensive !
