Thankfully two guys who were afraid of getting stuck inside Zanskar took their chances and reached Shinkula Top to reach Manali and I hopped on in that car to reach BRO post below the pass. See how we recovered the Gurkha from there. I was lucky otherwise had to walk down for hours to reach the BRO post.

There are anti freeze sachets available at BP petrol pumps(kashmir)which can be added to the diesel tank, it would have helped you to get the engine running. I use them when I go to Gulmarg(8500feet) for few days and it never let me down. The temperature at Gulmarg is -15 which is lower than what you experienced but still the anti free would have helped for sure.
Thank God you are safe. After seeing ur last episode, i was genuinely concerned about ur well-being.
I don't think we should only blame force for cold start issue , I think battery which is outsource product by EXIDE or Amaron is equally responsible for failure , so battery manufacturer should go for R&D and design a good product for this cold start issue. Thnx

HI Deepak A quick suggestion. I always keep 2 water bottles with me in the blanket in extreme winters which have always saved me. Just a small hack gives you dirkable temp water in exterem temperatures. My 2 paisas. :)

Actually petrol engine mai spark plug fuel ko ignite kr deti hai somehow but diesel engines mai fuel ignite krne ke liye kch nhi diya hota, it is purely on compression, that's why diesel engines ko cold weathers mai start rakhna hi padta hai
Bro always add Antifree to diesel. Diesel engines are always pain in A** BEYOND -10 DEGREE.
Cover engine at night and keep running it.

Bro u should always carry small kerosene stove and matchbox with u as desi jugad for heating engine or water they never dissapoint u at time of emergency and for diesel treatment i am using HOTSHOT WINTER DIESEL ANTIGEL works pretty well here at keylong.

Why don’t you make route maps for people like us if they want to do your trip like you.
For Gorkha after 10k kms I would recommend 0w-30 than 5w-30 synthetic oil. Even if it’s not the recommended grade. It will help you with cold start but won’t affect engine performance, since the operating viscosity that is recommended falls under 0w30 oil. It will help you in cold weather and when engine is hot it will act the same as recommended by manufacturer.
Engine oil being viscous enough to pump is the single most important thing to cold start a vehicle. The other most important factor is CCA rating of the battery, this aspect is most ignored in India. Use a battery with highest CCA rating you can fit your car and also have a backup.

Always carry petrol in a bottle. Spray little petrol in air filter or intake manifold. It should start the engine.

Try to put the smell of petrol in front of air filter of diesel car, the diesel car could start! Just a small tip. You know way beter than me.

1. Always stay near a populous area.
2. Carry Petrol, Matchsticks, Camphor, dried coir, wood, etc material.
3. Put anti freeze in your diesel tank.
4. Never trust a machine and carry your precautions.
5. Last but not the least, carry clothing and oxygen cylinder.

In such temp -40 -50. U need to keep engine warm up after avery 2 hours. Its about to keep battery charged and most important not to let oil freeze in pan. Always put new oil and fully synthetic blend oil before making new trip in such cold. Keep jump starter in car

Satellite phones not allowed in india.. needs special permission to carry which is difficult to get
Whilst 4wdriving I never leave without a bag of firewood and firelighters which is crucial for cold climate and lipo4 batt junp starter that can jump start upto 10ltr engins like trucks too.

Will k oil stove will help? In extreme whether conditions Russian army burn fire under engine compartment to heat engines. If u have k oil heaters it can help in heating engine.
