I don't think there is a bromeliad that doesn't do as well in Soucal. Here in the bay area..I have only had troubles with that darn Vresia flame- the common one that is cold sensitive. All others I've tried..I still have them all over the yards. The more tender the slower..but do ok here.
But soucal? The sky's the limit.
