So much is in this song. So, let’s get into it!: -First, we have the storm motif playing/ “holding on!” from Charybdis -When Odysseus slices the bag, Aeolus’ theme plays. That’s why DuvetBox drew her in the sky. -As Odysseus turns back to Poseidon, the Different Beast motif plays, conveying how he really IS a different person. -And, as he stabs Poseidon, buried in the music is Tiresias’ theme. “I see a man who gets to make it home alive, but it’s no longer you”. The monster fully came into being -In the livestream animatic, Poseidon is bleeding from his face, a throwback to Polyphemus being blinded -Also in the livestream, Odysseus “draws his final breath” during Get in the Water, passing out under the waves. He returns for 600 Strike with glowing red eyes, a visual the prophet previously showed him as “the monster”/the man who makes it home. -Jorge has confirmed that Odysseus pushed himself back awake, using every ounce of love for his family, his rage over the past 20 years, his drive to get home, absolutely everything to come back. In doing so, however, he became the monster. No god power up, but I’m sure using Poseidon’s own trident gave him a boost. I like to think Odysseus is now “neither man nor mythical”, since he gave in. Plus, we have the choir of “600 Men! as they fight, and only non-mortals can have choirs. This is also still just a concept album. Reasoning behind how he beat Poseidon can change, if Jorge wants it to. -For an artistic choice, DuvetBox made the image of Poseidon/Eurylochus being stabbed _in the back._ Fun dash of angst from them… This has been your report of a few song/animatic facts. I might’ve missed some, but happy to share what I know. Love your reaction and analysis. Now to prepare for the Ithaca Saga 🩵 (PS- I cannot tell you how hard my jaw hit the floor when I first heard this song).
This is definitely one of the best renditions of this song because while Poseidon is physically overcome, he also isn’t made into a complete joke. At the end of things, he’s hurt and his pride’s taken a hit but overall he’s still fine and more amused by the depths Odysseus has sunk to. Hell, he’s even laughing by the end of it. And in the end, while his own words have been turned on him, his philosophy is still being proved right by Odysseus’s actions. It’s a pyrrhic victory. Odysseus is finally home, but like the prophet told him, he died on the way back and is now the same ruthless monster that Poseidon is. The physical victory belongs to Odysseus, but Poseidon won the war for his morals and his soul.
Fun fan theory, and my personal one, is that Ody *did* die in the previous scene, and came back from pure willpower and his own divine blood as "the monster". Becoming something more than a mortal, due to him, technically, being part-god. Just not enough to be called a Demigod such as Heracles. But considering feats and blessings can change that in many a Greek story, especially for heroes, it feels likely as a nod from Mr. Jalapeño. He is "neither man nor mythical", something in-between. Combine that with a gods artifact (wind bag) and the *potential* favor of a few gods in the moment (Ares, Athena?, etc), and we get a traumatized baby godling handing one of the big three his backside on a well deserved platter. This is purely for EPIC theory/lore stuff as well, obviously the original Odyssey has a totally different build up and scenario, explanation, etc.
my favorite fan theory is that this is a multiverse. After all this story has many inteprations and each has different takes and epic is different than all of them, which is why prophet says "I see a world where I help you get home, but that is not a world I know" implying "yes dude... in many other stories I give you a good advice and help you a lot but not gonna lie... I don't know how to help you, you are getting nothing to me that is useful and you will learn what you need to do by yourself anyway. Sorry :/"
When his own philosophy turned on him is when Poseidon gave in. "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves," and he realized how much pain that mindset caused and created when and only when Ody got ahold of him.
Love how you catch the details the artists include! Fun fact, the artist confirmed that for the flash on Eurylochus, what part of his body Odysseus was stabbing was not a coincidence.
“Next to my wife” is one of if not the best mic drop in this musical. Let’s freakin go. Also just appreciate all the cut ins Duvet put in during the Poseidon stab-a-thon.
Odysseus to Poseidon probably: "Let me show your the effects of your own teachings you hypocrite and no I freaking hate it, but this is what you've been asking for."
Fun Fact: there was a fan theory that Ares empowered Odysseus in this fight(because he had red eyes in the original video) and it gained such traction that the singer who played Ares in God Games made a video voicing giving him the strength to pull this off. I'll see if I can find it for you.
"Hmphhe! Your boy's home!" Funniest reaction EVER! Oh that levity. Hold on tight to that for the end my dude. Fun fan (?) Theory: Posiedon's screams are sung because they are music to Ody's ears
I think its important to remember Odysseus tried "Open Arms" one last time in the previous song. He wasnt begging for forgiveness or cowering in fear "Arent you tired, Poseidon? How long must this go? We're _both hurting_ . . .why not leave this here & just go home?" Odysseus tries one last time to extend his hand, to reach out in empathy, to _find another way_ It is only when he stares death in the face, so close he can glimpse the other side, that he finally goes full monster, Because, above it all, he WILL get back to his son & wife
Yea Duvetbox did a wonderful job. I think it might be worth it to go back when you are done with the series and watch a couple by 1 animator.. like all of Duvetbox's or all of Gigi's or some other channels have done a 2-3 alternate versions of a song. All of the animators are amazing and they all have slightly different takes on some songs and it is amazing how ta story will change when you do another animator.. Oh Duvetbox is a woman. she did a watch along with Mortious and Casper fox on there joint channel Open arms reactions.
definitely a very divisive song, even in this comment section lol. this one admittedly had to grow on me, having to relax and embrace the anime of it all, but there's also a thematic resonance at play. Poseidon was kind of screwed the moment Jorge made him a physical, present threat, instead of the looming behind-the-scenes one he was in The Odyssey proper. would I have liked an alternative, where Odysseus goes "well? I got in the water and lived. you gonna let me go now?" loophole instead of the physical beatdown? sure, absolutely. but with what we've got: Poseidon lets him go because Odysseus learned the lesson. he may have gotten stabbed to crap, but he won the ideological war.
I love this animatic for this song, it's so much better than the 'canon' one. The 'canon' one is just so anime and unrealistic, it's just.. Eh Duvetbox has a great way of making it more 'realistic' and believable while also adding in the extra emotions with those flashes, and portraying how Poseidon is at the end. He's beaten, but he's still laughing, he's given in after having his own philosophy turned against him, but he didn't get permanently hurt or anything. He's just amused to see how far one mortal will go to get back home, after seeing how he was in the beginning It's such a good adaption!
"It's just so anime" You do realize that's kinda the point? It's a musical based around anime and video games. A lot of (J)RPG's are unrealistic because normally the threats that are faced would never be beaten otherwise.
You ain’t ready for Ithaca. If “Six Hundred Strike” shook you this much, “Odysseus” is gonna rock your head. You ain’t ready for the Return of the King.
I’m gonna be honest but I still can’t take this song seriously. The only way Odysseus vs Poseidon ends is with Odysseus turned into a fish and speared on the trident. Even if you wanted to say he could beat him, Zeus would just ash him after a mortal defeated a god on par with himself. I think it would’ve been better if Odysseus just escaped one last time before Poseidon was ordered to leave it. Beautiful job by Duvetbox as always.
I don't want to be harsh, cause I'm not sure how I would have done it but... I just can't like the writing here. It asks too much of my suspension of disbelief to see a mortal beat a god in a fight. A mortal can escape, maybe, or bargain, but defeat a god? And Poseidon out of all of them, to boot? Sorry but it doesn't reach me, and with that, the rest of the song doesn't reach me either. With this at the end and Calypso's song at the start (and charybids song feeling almost like filler), I'd say this is by far the weakest saga in Epic. Animation was great, though.
@@AmbyrRavyn Sisyphus tricked Thanatos and chained him (which does sound silly by itself), the chains being abnormal themselves, so it is not like he beat the god of death in a fight like Ody did here. I don't know this giant story, but giants at least are closer to the gods in power, these beings that are neither god nor man often are, like the cyclops siblings that forged Zeus and his brother's weapons, it is less surreal than thinking of a mortal beating a god in a fight.
Maybe it sounds ridiculous in a more modern perspective where we view gods as inherently greater and invincible things, But its not all that unbelievable for the mythology it comes from, Gods get their butts handed to them all the time, wether thats in a one on one fight or entire wars, The half of greek mythology not focused on the number of zeus's kids, is just mortals outwitting, outfighting and out-anythinging the Gods. Besides the fact that Poseidon... Also isnt a martial god, Heck, Aphrodite is closer to being a martial god than Poseidon, Not only is she in bed with Ares, but she was imported to Greece through Sparta as a War Goddess, So considering that Odysseus is a life-long warrior, life-long trickster, and life-long fighter of godly and adjacent beings... It makes sense that he beats the guy who wins 99% of his fights, through drowning people before they ever get close enough to threaten him, Not only is odysseus a sailor granting him great skill in water to resist poseidons power, But hes infinitely more experienced than him in a straight fight.
@@chibipotate You know that Ody having more experience in a fight, when we're comparing him and Poseidon doesn't make any sense right? Bro literally fought many wars, like the Titanomachy (which was basically only composed of divine beings). And it's not like Poseidon is only the God of Sea, but of the Storms and Earthquakes too. I mean, it doesn't makes sense that Poseidon for that matter could be defeated by a mere quarter god. I know that there are many cases of mortals wounding and even defeating (in some aspects) some Gods, but it's Poseidon we're talking about, one of the "big three", not some Ares who always lost in the myths. If Poseidon really tried, he could have invoked a tsunami, an earthquake, maybe even lightning (because of the storm domain), but no, bro was really struggling like an idiot trying to manually hit a fast as hell target. They really needed to nerf bro for the plot, not that i could blame them for doing that.

Firstly: Yeah, fk Poseidon.
Secondly: There's a fan theory that Poseidon's screams are soo melodic because they are music to Ody's ears.

Shut it with the spoilers!
I 100% recommend BrittPowwPixel's animatic for The Challenge. They did a fantastic job in their rendition.
I will argue that the canon version is far better just because of how much more brutal Odysseus is when he tortures Poseidon

Better then the other animatics were Odysseus gets a power up and throws hands with the God of the sea
