  • Photographer and long-term Kyoto resident John Einarsen shares his mindful vision on beauty through his photographs of moments of clarity and healing. John Einarsen has been spellbound by the visual brilliance of our world ever since he was a child. He writes in his most recent book, “A genuine perception is pure-an unasked-for offering from the universe. For me, it is meant to be honored, expressed with fidelity, and then shared with others.” In 2010 John discovered Miksang Contemplative Photography, and for the next ten years he studied “seeing” through his photography and in 2022, he published a collection of his Miksang photographs, This Very Moment. His other photography books include Kyoto: The Forest Within the Gate (with Edith Shiffert and others), Small Buildings of Kyoto Vol. I & II, Zen Gardens and Temples of Kyoto (with John Dougill), and Curtain Motif. In 1986, along with other Kyoto-based artists and writers, he founded Kyoto Journal, a quarterly magazine providing insights from Asia. John received the Commissioner’s Award of the Japanese Cultural Affairs Agency in 2013.
2022年、Miksangの写真集『This Very Moment』を出版。他の写真集に『Kyoto: The Forest Within the Gate』(エディス・シファート他共著)、『Small Buildings of Kyoto Vol.I & II』、『Zen Gardens and Temples of Kyoto』(ジョン・ドゥギル共著)、『Curtain Motif』などがある。1986年、京都在住のアーティストや作家とともに、アジアからの視点を提供する季刊誌「京都ジャーナル」を創刊し、2013年には文化庁長官賞を受賞。 This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Thank you, John. You reach across the years, back to when I'd contributed to Kyoto Journal, to touch what I'd needed to hear in the here and now. Your words about seeing, accepting, creating.are a medicine for our wounded cultures. And for me in this moment. Once again, thank you for your presence in Art which we both share and serve.

I can attest to John's destiny to embrace this photographic mindset early on in his life. He was my college roommate freshmen year at ASU, Tempe AZ. Even during this period his camera was "attached to his hip" for capturing thought provoking images on campus and beyond.
