It seems more as if that the violin is the player & Ryu is the instrument, he doesn't seem into it at all. I know Jascha Heifetz was also said to be emotionally detached but you can tell that wasn't true for the care he took in the technique he used. Whenever you hear Heifetz it's as if his music is conveying emotion even if you couldn't read it on his face, I hope as a violinist, I could have something like that where all the feeling and emotion is invested into the music of my instrument.
While he plays he does give some weird expressions that make him look like he's thinking "song will be over in in x minutes". He's talented, being from a family of violinist probably helped lol and a renowned violinist sister.

初めて、五嶋龍くんのバイオリンを聞きました。さすがに男性的で力強い、やや荒い感じあり、音色は艶やカでよい、どうしてもみどりさんと比べてしまうので、テクニックの完成度は、ともかく、音楽性は、お姉さんの方が一枚上手ですね。これから修行積んで、豊かな感性で演奏してくれれば自然と評価も上がると。これからの人だから。

ヴァイオリンのテクニック凄い．．恐らく，演奏することのできない曲はないでしょう．．女性のヴァイオリンイストと違って，可能性が無限という感じを受けます．．．やはりヴァイオリニストは男性．．．女性の場合は，曲を，誰かが弾いた曲を正確にその通りにしようという努力が見えて，何か自分のものになっていないと感じる時がします．．
ChopinのOOO(忘れました）２０番の情熱的な曲．．．
