Thanks for the review and great details.... I've always planned routes and more or less memorized them for rides. Yep, its almost the end of 2020 and about time I move to GPS. I have one question; Can routes be made on Google maps or Garmin software, then imported to Zumo 396 LMT-S via the SD card or USB?
Through the Gamin software yes. But Basecamp can be a challenge to learn to be honest. Lots of videos out there on learning it. As for google you can but have to go thru a google maps to gpx converter web site. This is how I do it but sometime when the Garmin calculates it, it doesn't always come out as the exact route I did. I have no idea why. I have been experimenting with importing the gpx into basecamp and then down into the GPS but with all these travel restrictions I haven't really tested it well enough to know if it helped or not. Oh and you download the routes via the USB cable that it comes with. I'd seriously look into the new one that came out. The big down side of the 396 is it can be very hard to see in direct sun light.
@@PatsAdventuresTravels I had friends with GPSs that have the same problem with route transfers(one of the reasons I don't use GPS currently). @@painsrides3616 My understanding is if you can create the exact route in basecamp the gps will follow it. The 396 at the time I bought this one does not connect to wifi. I do not know if they ever updated them to take wifi. You have to charge them with a USB cable and update via same cable. Or can buy a special cradle to charge while your riding.

Yes it can be hard wired into the bike. The cable it comes with does not have any kind of connector on it. It has a fuesed + red wire and an unfused - black wire. What I did was splice into my 12 receptacle so the GPS is getting power at all times whether the bike is powered or not. What I did on my previous bike was to wire directly to battery terminals, but be careful because when bike is running there is about 14 volts there. Not sure if this GPS will take that or not. Pat's Rides not just on video. On the reviews some customers said that it’s not very bright in the sun. That can be a huge issue. I know, my iPhone 6s is shit under the sun. Can’t see a damn thing
You can upload them, but I have a heck of a time keeping them from being modified. I try to make them into a trip. It's more like a track when you use a GPX file. Best thing I think is to upload it into basecamp and covert and use it that way.
you forgot the best part... it is almost impossible to plot a route using the roads you want.. it like to send you on wild adventures,,, and I mean WILD. you will end up going places you don't need to be, you will go up total stranger's driveways. you will be directed to travel on pull over spots. this thing will have you ride around a neighborhood just to come back on the road you were already on,,,WHY? why does it tell you to go in circles? you can use GOOGLE 'MY MAPS' to make a custom route, then import into 'BASECAMP' and create a route that way,, but it is in NO way EASY. it likes to make it's own route.
Agreed Basecamp is terrible. I used to just make a route on google maps and then export that gpx and import it into the unit that way. All is good unless you let it recalculate then game on. Who knows where you'll end up.
I’m generally pleased with mine BUT it insists on indirect routes even when set on faster route. Frustrating. With local knowledge, I can just ignore and it will adjust. Anyone know a fix?
Is there a chance you have the road set to small roads? I know that is a different setting than just faster or shorter route. I can't think of the way garmin says it right now.
Thanks for the video Pat! I'm thinking about buying one of those...I have one question: it should come with lifetime maps updates... do updates include also the speedtraps database??
I use LiveTrack with my iPhone and my wife tells me that she can see where my bike is at all time. When she is at work, she can get an update. Her phone call comes through and I typically stop to answer...So the LiveTrack works well. But the device is constantly losing the connection my 30K headset... I use the Media Player to pass through music and I typically lose connection from the ZUMO 396... Annoying DISCONNECT MESSAGE all the time...
My wife like the live track too when I remember to turn it on lol. I have not had any disconnect problems with the iPhone but I haven’t used the gps to stream music.
@@PatsAdventuresTravels I have discovered how to maintain connectivity... PAIR the iPhone to the ZUMO; then let the ZUMO distribute BT to the SENA for all of the AUDIO inputs from the ZUMO SETTINGS Controls... The SENA will show Disconnect on the iPhone Settings; which is Ok. Turn-By-Turn will come through to the SENA; and Music can be managed from the ZUMO MEDIA Player; The phone will function normally... Effectively, the ZUMO becomes the hub.
Google Maps is OK for simple things in town, but for longer road trips it fails miserably. Especially if you care about how you get there rather than just where you go. It's OK for cars, but it tends to make for boring motorcycle rides. With the Garmin, you can use Basecamp on a computer to do most of the route planning and it will keep track of your estimated fuel capacity and recommend upcoming gas stations. I've used Google Maps, but in all honesty it's mediocre at best and requires a phone or tablet.

There are a lot of things that can be done on the fly and a lot that can't. Like any nav aid they have their easy and hard aspects about them. Kind of hard to read a map when moving down the road. I have used both many times and both have their place.
in This Country they are only selling the 395 model . the life time map are region locked. If i buy 396LMT S online i won't get lifetime map in this region.
Kinda like shoving in down my throat..
That sucks when companies do things like that!
I thought only the zumo 595(6) came with a pandora app.
Thank you for showing all this detail.
Buying this tonight!
At first it was that way, no Pandora. I was disappointed and I contacted Garmin. They had told me they were going to put the Pandora app out in an update which they did. If memory serves the remote control ability for the Garmin Virb Ultra 30 Action Camera came out in an update too, but I am not as sure about that.
It’s true when customers say that the screen is not very bright
It is. It could be brighter for sure. It looks worse in the video than what it actually is though.
Pat's Rides not just on video. On the reviews some customers said that it’s not very bright in the sun. That can be a huge issue. I know, my iPhone 6s is shit under the sun. Can’t see a damn thing
@@chauffeurmarco Yes it needs to be better for direct sun light.
Does the mount come with the sat nav ?
Yes, the mount seen comes with it.
Can you upload GPX files and will it follow them or plot the shortest route despite the GPX file?
Pat's Rides I have it set to avoid major highways. That means interstates to me; maybe the software applies it more broadly.
@@stephenrichie4646 I agree with your logic. But I am not sure either
Thanks for the video Pat! I'm thinking about buying one of those...I have one question: it should come with lifetime maps updates... do updates include also the speedtraps database??
I can't speak of the speedtraps since I didn't buy that option. Buy as for the maps yes they are lifetime updates.
@@MrTanker10a Ive been thinking of doing that with my Cardo unit. Thanks!
The wifi connection is problematic, not working every time.
I was lucky. Never had an issue with this one or the Zumo XT that is on the wifes bike right now.
why not use google map?? Internet you say? you can download the regional maps in google map to use offline
I like the reliability of a GPS over smart phone for the main reason. Granted the smart phone maps are always more up to date.
Curve routes ?
If you mean does it have the curvy route feature? Sort of. There are menus in it to pick the kind of road, but it isn't called the curvy route like the previous models. Had to come back and edit this. It just hit me. It is called adventures routing now.
itchy boots brought me here.
Wow.... and I am no where near her caliber!! Well welcome I hope you find something you like.
You should just give this one to your wife and get your 665 back don’t look like your going to like this gps at all lol albeit was a good review😂
Thanks. Yeah this one and the 665 is long since sold. I am now using a tablet on my bike and a Zumo XT on the wifes bike.
By far
Tomtom 550 a million times better
Free world maps downloadable
Better screen performance
Good to know.... never used one
I had planned on getting this Zumo right up tell I seen the cheap ass U-bolt they decided to use for the mount, it's ugly 🤮.
Think all my Zumos have been that way. I built my own mount but still used a u bolt.
to dim
I agree it is too dim.
thank you for the video, very helpful.
Glad you like it! I'll have another on the way about the Touratech locking mount for it in the near future.
