    Very interesting! And what about using the built in resolve log to 709 lut?

  • @TonyRush21
    @TonyRush21 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very interesting info. Question. At about 1:03 you recommended using a REC 709 LUT as a custom LUT inside the GH5 while shooting V-Log. Would it be ok to use the REC 709 LUT that comes native with Premiere Pro

    Cool 🙌 i want to know one thing...that is like..so we need to color grade first all clips or later like after editing if we want to edit clips in after effects for some cool visual effect?

    You said that you do not like to add another layer over number 3 but I didn't understand why? Can you please explain why you went back to making a layer between 1 and 2?

  • @TheFilmCouple_

    Getting sick of every tutorial requiring a paid LUT. The color settings can be observed when a LUT is applied, so this would be an nice way to show us the fundamental settings to understand how the color space is being transformed (plus other adjustments) rather than applying a LUT without know what it's actually doing behind the scenes.

    • @pMT0m
      @pMT0m 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check out Waqas Qazi. He actually color grades footage in stead of applying LUTs. There's also a good color grading chapter in the Blackmagic Design video series/tutorial on Da Vinci Resolve.

      Besides you never supposed to use LUT. This is a simple little cms job.

    • @CameronGallagher
      @CameronGallagher  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually LUTS are almost ALWAYS used in the process. Check any American Cinematographer magazine! They are ESSENTIAL in most workflows!

      @@CameronGallagher not for color managment. For OOTF (artistic intent) or it may be used for calibration whether on camera or on display.

    • @CameronGallagher

      Actually, most do for color Managment. They use the LUT for conversions (a more accurate way than correcting from scratch) because of its accuracy for matching cameras, etc.

    At 8:18 you use a layer node for the qualifier, but you don't do anything with the layer below the key. Why use a layer node is you don't do anything with the layer below it?

    • @CameronGallagher
      @CameronGallagher  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m keeping things separated, in the case that I would want to change something prior, later on. With me, I’m always building my node tree for the future. Nothing is worse, than having to go back and change something, where this way, I have a layer below. Especially when qualifying. I hope that makes sense

    In Davinci Resolve there is the LUT V-LOG to Rec709. Shouldn't be used VLOG-L to Rec709 instead?

    Great Video! Did you come across the situation that some color pixels/noise showed up in skin and light color area after grading the vlog footage? I found it so annoying to get it fixed. Especially shooting in 8-bit.

    • @dan_hitchman007
      @dan_hitchman007 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DO NOT shoot Vlog in 8 bit. There isn't enough data to manipulate when you color grade. You must use 10 bit, 4:2:2 on the GH5.

    • @CameronGallagher
      @CameronGallagher  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true at all, I shoot 8-but VLOG almost EVERY shoot and it always looks great!

    • @joeandcharlotte240
      @joeandcharlotte240 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get this too, awful pixels of colour especially in skin and gradient areas that it seems 8-bit fails to have detail for. Usually harsh pink in skin tones with just the standard LUT when applied to V-Log. Especially bad in Premiere so I tried Davinci Resolve with exactly the same LUT and it was nowhere near as bad but still there.

    • @brandonramirez4674
      @brandonramirez4674 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might not be exposing the skin tones properly. They need to fall between 40-70IRE. Nothing more or less. Also try not to increase the ISO above 800. You start loosing Stops in dynamic range.

    I have a gh5s and am trying to master v-log, I shoot small real estate and need help- what aperture, shutter speed and iso should I have it set at? Should I keep aperture at lowest point (2.8) always, and then adjust just iso? What do I do with the shutter speed? Please help and thank you!!!

    • @andrewmccarty
      @andrewmccarty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sounds like you need to get the fundamentals down before worrying about v-log. As for the exposure settings, a good rule of thumb is to adjust your aperture first so you can decide how much background blur there is, then adjust your ISO to dial in the exposure (but too high on ISO will cause grainy footage). Shutter speed should (almost) always be set to double your frame rate (fps). Ex: if you are shooting at 24 frames per second, you want 1/48 sec shutter speed, or as close to that as possible. If shooting at 30fps, then 1/60th sec shutter speed, etc.

    • @tallAldiProduction
      @tallAldiProduction 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CameronGallagher I feel the problem with the V-Log on the GH5 is that it is not a proper V-Log from their Cinecameras but a slightly modified Logcurve with clipped highlights, to match the GH5/s's sensors. So overexposing results in clipped highlights in my experience
