  • Everything just changed in tier 1 League of Legends.
Yesterday, Riot announced a series of sweeping changes including a new international tournament, regions in Asia merging together and the LCS forming a pan-Americas conference league with Latin American and Brazil.
Some have welcomed the changes as necessary for the future of LoL esports in the Americas - but there are many angry voices too.
    Here’s all the details.

brasils problem with the merger is that despite LOUD being the sole champion for 4 whole splits weve been having a blast lately, the co-streams doubled viewership and there are a lot of new and exciting rosters promissing long term projects that now might not have a chance on center stage, and for what? so NA can keep their investiments safe? be sure, the transition will be rough and retaliation is to be expected, majorly depends on which teams will be demoted, thing is, every single team this split has something going for them, FURIA is the safest one to kick out, but thats it, everyone else has too big of a fanbase or at least a reason to watch their games.
If we could keep all of our teams there would be no problem, question is that 40% of our players and their staff will have no where to go, most will go for academy, which brings a whole new problem on itself. We are at a huge loss with the merger, what does NA has to offer? better pay for our players? most people in the country think they are being paid way too much already, theres nothing to be gained for the average viewer and our league has never been better.
And people somehow are surprised we are mad, we dont care about LCS and LS's point of a domino effect is fear mongering, our league is solid and self sustainable, we dont need a constant stream of investiments to keep our doors open, we have solid organizations with strong sponsorship and our operational costs are significantly lower than LCS's
This change will be met with pitchforks.
We already proved we dont need riot to make a profitable tournament, this merger is the biggest red flag for LCS's survivability, i would be scared if i were you
All that been said, RIP LLA

They should just do away with franchising completely and take a page out of Dota 2 or Apex Legends' system where its truly a "fight-for-your-spot" system, introduce a pro-circuit where points = secure a spot in Worlds. Anyone, any team playing from their mother's basements can compete on the top of the scene if they're good enough. Make it so that all the "top-tier professionals" need to always perform or they lose their spot to no-names, would make the game very entertaining to watch again.

There are a ton of incredibly talented and hard working players in the Latin American regions that unfortunately just could never reach their peak due to the circumstances that they were born in, and now, they're being forced to commit to this "upgrade" where they'll have to play against and lose against players that are simply lazier and less talented, that will win because of better resources.

a centrally planned consumer entertainment product is not a great idea. riot is making arbitrary decisions surrounding the product rather than letting the market decide and this will be league esports' downfall in the long run. they need to liberalize it and let private companies organize tournaments instead. this will cut a lot of the bloat off. there IS demand for league esports but not necessarily in the format that riot presents. what i think would be best is: let riot run regional summer split and worlds (with msi format) and then work with private companies to fill up the gaps at the start and end of the year with whatever has high demand.

Copied from my post on The Dive's YT page.
For the guest spot topic I think the setup should be that there are 3 guest slots, but 1 slot opens up per year as needed (up to 3 max). Then the bottom two teams in LCS get relegated IF they are not a franchise team - so year 1 the guest has 2x chances to be relegated. If the guest team doesn't fall into the last 2 places, no team gets relegated and another guest spot opens up the next year. This pattern repeats until all 3 guest spots are filled. If all 3 are filled, the lowest ranked guest team will be relegated even if they didn't come into the bottom two and no guest slots are lost. If two guest teams out of 3 are in the bottom 2, both are relegated and 1 guest slot is loss. If two guest teams out of 2 are in the bottom 2, then both are kicked and 1 guest slot is lost. This is done to only ever allow 1 guest into LCS per year (up to a max of 3). Franchised teams will obviously never be relegated.
I think this way there is potential for teams to make it into the LCS and stay if they are good, and also guest teams can be removed and added more organically.
Then if a franchised team always makes bottom 2 when there are 3 guest teams they should be kicked from franchise or sell their spot.

its important to note, cblol is only getting bigger in brazil, while lcs is dipping and dying very quickly, brazilians are very upset about the change, its no benefit for our league... cblol has been hitting records of views between both official riot live streams in brazil, and people like Baiano, who is allowed to transmit and comment games here in Brazil.
We give much more value to content instead of simply being good, which is an important factor to competitive games.
Brazil has managed to keep cblol sustainable because of this shift to content over extreme gameplay, while allowing players and teams to improve at their own pace.
Lcs in the other hand works a lot differently from cblol, i dont say this to be a hater, but lcs is simply not my cup of tea, its for the most part boring matches, its not entertaining to me, while in brazil, we have very important names interacting with the whole community and keeping the hype while providing content not focusing in only being the best player all the time, but the best entertainer.

This sucks for all the sides involved tbh, but it is what it is and I get why they decided to do this.
Bronzil absolutely sucks balls as a region and usually spreads their legs at every international events to literally everyone else, so they do not deserve ANY MSI/Worlds slots. I mean if Turkey got dissolved despite being miles better than Bronzil, then why are the Bronzillian fans expecting anything differently? You have done nothing to justify your spots, and your League do not earn enough money (like China) to justify the immense investment and privileges that Riot has offered you. Maybe you can submit a proposal to Riot to remove your region from international play COMPLETELY and let the CB LOL become sth akin to the Brood War StarLeague in Korea atm. Asking Riot to remove their support will be really easy, BUT I highly doubt the executives of the CB LOL is ever gonna agree to do that tbh. Isolationism is an absurd idea in the age of globalization, and Bronzil has gotta step up or get out (apparently the head executor at Riot is Bronzillian lmao and he has chosen this fate for your region).
LLA will die as it should be. The region is just not profitable at all and the game isn't growing there. I got nothing to say tbh it is like OCE if Riot has any decent people who spent time studying business in college, they WILL pull the plug pretty normal thing to do the region is bad and do not earn them money, then why should they bother helping these guys? Sucks for the LLA pros though but what on earth are you even expecting?
LCS will suffer the most as their entire region is based on international success. Literally the policy of NA has been buy your opponents to win and it has been so for a decade, so losing spots at MSI/worlds is quite painful for the region I reckon. Especially to a region like CB LOL who they have completely crushed for years and the timing couldn't be more awful tbh. NA has just taken games off SKT, destroyed EU and made it out of groups at worlds for the first time in YEARS and this is their rewards? I mean I know nothing about the LCS and how they operate BUT for a region basing their entire identity on winning and international success, having to "sacrifice" 2 spots for Bronzil is just really horrible and will the viewership boost even worth the shits they have to go through, having needed to spend time massacring shit Bronzil teams every single split to "earn" their already well-deserved spots at worlds? Nahhh I don't think they would want that tbh.
The merger is devastating for all people involved, but I guess it just has to be done. LCS needs more views, CB LOL needs justification and LLA needs to... survive. Massive L to everyone though none got what they wanted but all had to sacrifice sth they desire to keep the "Americas" alive. It is what it is I guess I do hope Bronzil fans show up and protest at Riot HQ though because if there is a very small chance the merger could be canceled... Just go for it. NA fans prolly wont do shits because there are so few fans left of the League that will prolly fk off after the merger too so Riot would never take them seriously, but hey atleast they aint as dead as the LLA is rn (heh).

I'm not sold on these Lolesports changes. If the goal was to encourage more regional growth then this seems counterintuitive, as not only does it mean even less options for players and staff then there are already but even newly promoted teams will still just use mostly imports. Also correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the point of splitting APAC into its own separate regions supposed to help grow their respective countries league scenes? If so then why merge them again? As for this extra international event it seems nice in theory, but in practice who knows?
Finally I find the flaming & insulting going back & forth between LCS & CBLOL fans completely unacceptable and unhelpful. Many on both sides are unhappy right now, & while constructive criticism is fine, this is not. Let's all just try to calm down people.

Getting rid of more teams did the opposite of what riot wanted why would you ever risk your team franchise on a team like oldschool cloud nine when you can have a bunch of veterans and overseas talent they made things more bloated and stagnant because now there's even less people take spots

Haven't even watched it yet, but all I can say is thank GOD. Pro gaming is a cool new thing, but the toxicity and arrogance the players show is sickening. Ruined the whole concept for me in NA.
Aight, just finished watching it and not "thank god"... I'm glad to see the most arrogant region fail, but not at others' expense

Makes sense outside of paying players and small orgs there's is no money going into professional league in NA at all. Nothing to raise future players, nothing to get a staff group together and zero incentive for anyone to invest or sponsor anyone other then our what 50ish some odd pro players? there's nothing at the start to becoming a pro and most stop in the middle cause match fixing, selling accounts, gambling and streaming are the only ways to make money to live off of and still be able to practice as much as you need to. EU is much the same but it's slowly changing there more money is a slowly being invested i was really hoping G2 would win MSI cause that slowly would pick up it's pace if they did.

I understand why they did this, as Valorant has an Americas VCT that includes LOUD (Brazil), Leviatán (Argentina), KRÜ (Argentina), mibr (Brazil), and FURIA (Brazil) along with six North American teams (100 thieves, C9, Evil Geniuses, G2, Sentinels, and NRG), but the difference is that the VCT started that way and Valorant is still growing. They just branched off to separate China's league from EMEA and VCT Pacific recently became its own region. I think instead of combining smaller leagues, they should be focusing on growing the ones they already have with fresh new uprising talent. Just this year the G2 Valorant team (formally The Guard before they were bought), rose from tier two to tier one and made it deep into the Valorant version of MSI. They were in the challenger scene last year and beat out all the franchise teams to make it to Champions Shanghai.
tbh I think it will take a very long time and a lot of hard work for it to become anything like VCT Americas. Especially since they already tried this by dismantling the OPL (long live the LCO, it's replacement) and cannibalizing it's players into the NA challenger teams.

The best thing about all of this is that riot completely need to blame theirselves.
The level of corporate greed displayed over a century is hilarious, if there weren’t as many players (heavily) addicted to the game, this would have happened way earlier. League had so many ways to stabilise itself and create a nieche of its own, but all Riot cared about was cash. You could clearly see how their love for the game was dying more and more by the years and yet they somehow thought their own decline would not reflect into player engagement etc.
I have not played a league game in 3 years after playing around 18.000 in the 9-10 years prior and all I can say is: my life changed for the better.

I guess Riot is doing this because they saw that minor regions cant become as strong as major regions so they are merging them into bigger regions in hopes of them getting better by playing vs stronger opponents. Its kinda okay, but I think it would be better if leagues had more teams. How can China has 17 teams without problems while others have 10 at max?
