- Cleaning clothe diapers doesn't have to be complicated but you have to do it properly to avoid smelly diapers that give your poor little ones a rash.
In this four part series I am sharing our experience with cloth diapering so far. You don't need complicated washing routines.

This is BY FAR the easiest and least-complex routine I’ve seen. Thank you so much!
Pro tip: If you need to hang diapers inside to dry, aim a fan blowing at them they will dry MUCH quicker and will be soft and gentle to baby's skin.
Thoroughly (roughly) shaking out your diapers after washing will soften them. No extra electricity needed.

I have a front loader washing machine, borax is a powder right? Where do you put it exactly?
The first stash I bought said to wash them 10 times before I even used them. I followed the routine, and they still sucked. It took me a long time to want to try again. My current stash is cotton, and so much better. I think the people who have complicated wash routines are not using natural fabrics.
Kudos to you for giving it another go! Agreed, high quality, all cotton inserts make a huge difference!
thank you for your video, I need some help what do you mean by water softener is that supposed to come with my washer if so how would I know ?
You are very welcome! A water softener is a separate piece of equipment that usually sits by your water heater and requires you to to puts salt pellets in it. Your water then runs through this equipment and it pulls further impurities out of you water.
i plan on using the same detergent you’re using but liquid, how would i find out the appropriate amount needed for a load of diapers?
Start with the amount needed for a medium size load and adjust up from there if you notice an odor on the dry diapers.
Yes thank you, 2/3 days MAX I have seen so many videos where people do theirs once a week. That’s just disgusting to me pee will start to produce ammonia I don’t see how people can do their’s once a week.

Completely agree, that's why I could never use a diaper service, they have once weekly pick-up/drop off. I can't even imagine the smell.
There is NOTHING wrong with washing once a week. Please don’t guilt trip and say it’s gross when it’s honestly not. I keep all dirty diapers in a closed pail and we don’t have any smells. I only wash once a week and we don’t even have any stains 🤷🏻♀️

There are multiple factors that lead to ammonia build up and the smell is not the only concern. Ammonia build up leads to skin irritation as well.
momlovesbest.com/ammonia-and-cloth-diapers Many sites including this one accurately state that urine starts producing ammonia after 5-7 days. It also goes over the other factors that lead to faster, more severe level of build up.
Do you scrape during changing? How do you deal with the BM itself?
We use disposable liners that go over the cotton inserts. This way the liner and the BM easily fall off into the toilet with minimal touching.
I see the cloth diaper safe detergents. My thing is my daughter's skin is sooo sensetive I want to try regular tide powder. But I don't want her to get a rash.
I currently use all free and clear on my clothes. But I'm considering tide free and clear for the cloth diapers before I try regular tide. Ugh!!
We have a water softener system installed actually because we live on a well so that's a blessing lol
Tide Free and Clear is what I used on everything while we were cloth diapering!
So do you dump the poop out in the trash before or just let it sit i need to know
With the use of disposable liners it is easy to lift the waste off and flush it. Some parents also use sprayers attached to their toilet to remove the waste in to the toilet before putting the diaper in the wet bag. Technically breast fed babies' waste is completely water soluble so it isn't necessary, but I have never put that to the test.
My washer can only do hot water. I am still waiting to get a new washer. Would it be better to hand rinse the stuff first in warm water, then just do the hot wash?

Actually no do not wash first in hot water it will literally "cook" the poop and pee. Just rince by hand !
Hot rinses are fine, cleanclothnappies recommends hot rinses in certain circumstances and otherwise always warm rinses.

So if the baby poops a whole bunch you just folded up put and put it in the bag and then wash it at a different time? Seems like it will get crusty on there. I’m totally new to the cloth diaper thing
We used disposable bamboo liners so those collected most of the solid waste. We would take those out of the soiled diaper and flush them. You have to wash diapers promptly to prevent ammonia build up so regardless things don't have time to dry out. We did diaper laundry three times a week.
you only used 1 pod? But the website about safe detergents said pods weren’t recommended, and to use 2 pre & 4 main. ? Lol
How many diapers were in your load that you only used 1? I use preflats so i dont have any more than 20 and my baby is already old enough & on 6-8 diapers a day now so i can do 2-3 days between washes
also we have hard water here in tx lol. Im wondering if i can use regular tide pod or ultra oxi tide pod instead of free n gentle ?
Wait can I put my pocket diapers in the dryer or should I hang dry them!?
So heat breaks down elastic and waterproof linings. I have heard of people halfway drying pocket diapers on low heat in the dryer and then hang drying them, or just hang drying them. The biggest impact will be on longevity of the diapers.
Have Ya'll ever experienced Maggots in Cloth Diapers. Where I leave there are tons of flies. Does anyone know how to get rid of them
Nope I have never had that issue but make sure you are zipping up your wet bag promptly and washing every 2-3 days.
I live in the Caribbean and we don’t usually use hot water in the house or to wash our clothes, Is it ok if I just use cold water? I’m due on April and I’m trying to learn as much as I can about cloth diapering before my baby girl is born
Hey Lenny! Not sure on this one. Heat certainly helps to sanitize and prevent staining, but you may be able to compensate with more detergent. I would look towards some local cloth diapering groups on online to see what their experience has been.

I personally have had very bad luck with using anything besides hot hot water. There is a lingering smell after they are washed and they stain more.

How much borax would u add to each load if you have hard water?
Also how big is each load?
1/2 cup per wash is a common starting point to try. If your diapers still smell bad after being washed and dried, then there is a possible build up of calcium and you should increase the amount of borax. Also DO NOT use it with hemp based diaper

We bought cloth diapers for our baby and I was very excited.... until I remembered they needed to be washed and I got very intimidated. Like what do I do with those poops? Dump them in the toilet? How to keep them in the diaper bag when we're out?
Yes we use disposable liners that help remove solid waste easily. When we are out we have a little wet bag that goes in our diaper bag to hold soiled diaper, but some people choose to go with disposables when they are on the go.

What should I use if my family is allergic to borax
Baking soda! I would recommend getting a big bag from Costco/Sam's if you go that route.
How can one tell if they have hard water or not?
You can buy water test kits to test your water or lookup your area on a site like this, www.hydroflow-usa.com/water-hardness-map.

I'm thinking of getting 40 diapers from aliExpress. And as I use them I will put them in a bucket with color safe bleach laundry detergent and oxy clean and water but keep them in there for a week but change the water out every 2 days. Also I'll use the plunging method I've seen, plunge the diapers for a few minutes then rinse and go wash them.
Aliexpress is great to get cloth diapers and wetbags!!
If you leave ANYTHING soaking for a week you're going to have a reeking rotten nasty mess, because the fibers will rot and bacteria will do their thing too. It's FAR better to rinse and hang "wet-only" diapers immediately, and wash soiled ones every day or 2 because a soaking diaper pail is a bucket of raw sewage.
If you're using bleach you don't want to soak them for more than an hour. Personal experience from doing so, I ended up with diapers with holes in the cotton, and even crusty matted microfiber. And on another instance my grandmother soaked the covers in oxyclean overnight to get the stink out, the smell may have been gone, but the pul was torn from the knit fabric in several places, making them unusable.
