Gauharjan was not the first Indian singer to have his/her song recorded on gramophone record. On 8th and 10th November 1902, Miss.Soshi Mukhi, Miss.Fannibala and Mr. N.C. Chakrabarthy had their many songs recorded before Gauharjan came to the studio of the Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd, in Calcutta on 11th November 1902.
The first ever Indian Singer to record in India was Miss.Soshi Mukhi, who was a 14 year old dancing girl of Classic Theatre, Calcutta. Fannibala was 15 years of age.
The matrix numbers of 7" records started at E.1000. The first song by Gauharjan has the matrix number E.1022, which shows that 22 recordings were taken before the recording of GAUHARJAN on 7" records.
The matrix numbers of 10" records started at E.100. The first song by Gauharjan has the matrix No.E.119, which means that it is the 20th recording for 10" records.
The first in 7" and 10" records are by Soshi Mukhi.
Gauharjan was a very rich tawaif...singing..dancing community which had the ill fame as prostitutes.
Her 166 songs were recorded by Gramophone record companies like the gramophone Company, Sun Disc Record, Nicole, Pathephone and Singer. Her recording career started in 1902 and ended in 1913. Even though she died only in January, 1930, no recording company recorded her songs after 1913.
It is very astonishing to note that only 8 recordings by her (4records) were issued on violet label which was for celebrity artists and was costly. After 1916, only 44 of her records were marketed. After her death in January 1930, gramophone Company issued three records on the economy label "Twin" and another record on "HMV" label .
Even though 79 records with songs by Gauharjan were issued in the first two decades of last century, very few of her records have survived. All these facts raise doubts about her popularity as a singer. She always had the patronage of the kings and the landlords in the Northern India and in the Mysore Palace in the South where she died on 17th January 1930 at the age of 56 years.
