I've been looking at these as a birthday gift for daily use, but was caught up due to some previous reviews I've seen. I've seen almost all of your reviews and I probably trust you more than most other sources when it comes to reliable reviews of gadgets. Great review and thank you for doing it.
Yes, USB OTG works out of the box for stuff like keyboards & mice etc, but to use mass storage devices you'll need to root first. I never bothered with it so far, as I have the Kingston Wi-Drive (which I reviewed very recently if you're curious).
its awesome how honest you review the Nexus 7 and just say what i think about all the other guys who reviewed it, without making the device worse...glad i found you :)
Great review I like how you were completely honest towards how you used the nexus and where it fits in your life! You are the first person i have seen to give an in depth view to this tablet with an educated opinion towards where it fits in! Thank you
On all android devices you can add social media widgets, if you wanted customizability you should have got an Android tablet, iPads are great devices but the nature of iOS is that it's a instant-use device, it works well how it arrives but isn't easy to change much.
Excellent, witty, unbiased review. A pleasure to watch. I've done a bit of experimenting w/ multiple USB chargers and I found that anything with an output of 500-700mAH will not work. All of my chargers that are 1A or more didn't have any problems charging the N7. They did charge a bit slow which may be better for the battery but they also got a bit too warm for my liking. For the record, the N7's stock charger is 2AMP and charges crazy fast. (harder on the battery when it comes to longevity?)
Great review. I'm sold. I'm buying this device (my first tablet) at $299 in Sweden. But with 32 GB. Most reviews seem "old enough" to not mention this alternative size. Thank you Blunty.
I am currently waiting to see if Google is actually going to release 32GB version of N7. I was also trying to decide between N7 and the newly announced iPad Mini. Your review was just one of the best I've seen so far and make me want to buy N7 even more. Subscribe.
Great video. I have an iPad 3 and have been shopping around for a more portable tablet and I gave the Nexus 7 a whirl. I'm really impressed with it and your video did a fantastic job of covering the various plusses and minuses of the device. Going to follow your videos in the future.
2 speakers does not automatically imply a stereo sound-stage. They are simply FAR too close together to generate any kind of stereo effect. It's like cramming both earbuds into one year, you just aren't going to experience a separated sound-stage.
Fantastic. I really like your reviews. You don't show biasness like many other tech reviews. You go in depth, share the good, the bad, and the ugly- and even then, you made me want the Nexus 7 even more vs the hyped up folks making feel like "I dunno.. He/she seems a bit too excited". Thanks. I'm getting my 3DSXL and surely will be getting the Nexus 7 later on.. Maybe after WiiU.. Or before, I'm not sure, but I'm keeping an eye on it. I'm so very tempted...
Thanks for a well thought out and informative review. I have owned my Nexus for about five days now and find most of what you had to say to be accurate. Bottom line, it's a very well rounded device for an affordable price.
I find it highly reassuring that you, who's opinions and reviews have influenced my product choice, were first skeptical and then completely turned around, and now love the device. That's very open minded, which basically every reviewer should be. Problem is, a lot of them are not. :)
Very good review. It is nice to find a channel that gives good consideration to reviews and not as you say just yelling about how good it is. Will be subscribing. Thanks!
I agreed with every word you said. Probably the most unbiased review I have ever heard. By the way I subscribed to your channel mainly coz I wanted to learn a thing or two from the way you talk, which is good oration. Was glad to watch your video. Thanks.
It's nice to see a critic every once in a while, even if they criticise the things you like. Anyway, I live in Belgium and this one is still to come out, but I'm more excited about the Acer Iconia A111 and A 211. These are 7" and 10" (respectively) HSDPA+, microSD expandible "budget tablets", for almost the same price. I think they're only availible in Europe so far, because no US reviewer drooled over it yet. Anyway I hope you'll get to talk about them soon, until then I'll subscribe! =)
I have owned an ipad 1 for a couple of years now and Apple has stopped bothering to update it... Now instead of buying an iPad 3 i have got myself the Google Nexus 7 and hands down, i love it. It is much faster, much more responsive and has completely replaced my ipad that has failed to impress me due to it's components not catching up to hardware dependant games and apps (e.g. Infinity Blade, fruit ninja due to them crashing a lot). The N7 is by far the best IMHO, btw awesome video Blunty! :)
Cheers for the review mate, I own an Ipad as well and I also found that I was increasingly using the Nexus for daily use and just normal computing tasks around the house. The size makes it great but then again as you said the size also makes the Ipad better for Video and Travel :)
As someone who doesn't use tablets (and as of this post has no intention of using any time soon), I thought that this was a fair overview of the Nexus 7. It doesn't measure up to the iPad in most technical aspects, though that's because it's not trying to. Nice review. I was feeling a bit apprehensive with the earlier part of the review since it was mostly negative (or I guess harsh is a better term), but your conclusion really brought it all together. Thanks for your thoughts Blunty. :D
Very impartial review. The stutter so many reviewers have commented on,is probably a ram issue.Although it has 1gb of ram there are so many background services like google + etc, eating away at the memory.Mine currently has only 300mb free so i am constantly killing unwanted services to get the device running smoothly again.
I enjoy the review, specially 'cause you don't praise the product as much as other vlogers. It's good for it's price range and maybe better than other rather expensive gadgets out there. Gotta say I follow your work for a long time, never expect you to say something good about an Android product. Nicely done. Don't mind some typo, english isn't my first language.
I have a 32gb model Nexus 7 and I don't have any sort of build defects on my tablet. I am enjoying it quite a lot and my little brother wants one for Christmas now. (I got mine as a birthday present.)
Thank you for your review Blunty, I found it very helpful on deciding whether to buy the Nexus 7 tablet as my first tablet device. I’ve just placed an order for one :-)
Good-enough, got it. I think it will fit nicely with my intended use . Thank you for your review, it has helped me get a better view of the devices without the "ahh omg new thing!!" feeling. Very down to earth, thank you.
Have been going through so many reviews regarding the 'big three' tablets and this is the best I've consumed so far (especially appreciate the look through comics as I've wanted to know if its worth owning for that) Cheers.
Good review. I agree with pretty much all of your conclusions. Google/Asus seem to acknowledge the dominance of Apple in the high-end "not quite laptop" segment and also see the demand for "more than reader" devices like the Kindle Fire. Makes sense to go after that market instead of going straight for one that will be a lot harder to crack. If someone owns a laptop and just wants something to read books but also do web browsing, light gaming, and communication, a $200 Nexus 7 seems like a
why so many dislikes? its just verbal review, no speed tests, no camera tests, so its just personal opinion. Good device value for money wise that allows for total customization. Maybe that will be shown by Blunty on this channel.
I purchased one of those first Nexus 7s with the screen that pops out. I called Google customer service, told them about the issue I was having, and the tech rep immediately gave me a RMA #, emailed me a free UPS shipping label, to return the device, then added a new (free of charge to include free shipping) Nexus 7 into my Google checkout. I just had to click to accept. I was even given 28 days to return the defective one. I say their service is awesome so far.
I've had a Nexus 7 (16GB) about 4 months now and still love it! I agree with much of what this reviewer says, but would never trade my Nexus for an iPad if only due to the far greater flexibility of an Android device. Too much is made of the storage issue as with a $2 OTG cable and the $3 Nexus Media Importer ,I can use a flash drive or other external storage device for outboard storage. Tell me what $5 will buy at the Apple store!
This was a fantastic review! I've been wanting one of these for a while and now I'm sure I ill be pleased for my purchase. Getting the 32gb next week when it comes out :)
Its a valid concern, and I have actually found the Nexus 7 easier to use in terms of transferring music and content. Its a simple case of plugging the Nexus into my PC and dragging the music files over. Google PLay instantly recognizes my music. Or you can just download "DoubleTwist Player" and it will sync all of your itunes music. Also IMO has a really nice UI and I absolutely love the carousel of all my album covers when searching through "recent". Lots of music players apps to choose as well
Good stuff, an honest and well rounded review! I have been thinking about picking up a Nexus 7 myself, but wondered whether to wait out on rumours of the iPad mini. What are your thoughts on these rumours?
Yeah good review Blunty, I have both iPad 3 and Nexus 7 and I still prefer my iPad. Each to his own, but if someone asked me which should I get I'd have to say spend the extra and get an iPad.
Great review Blunty, why am I just finding out you were doing these as well? (I kinda thought you only did cameras). Well I will definitely be looking for more. Thanks.
Reading is fine (though for long books, novels etc, I'd prefer an e-ink screen) and I prefer the iPad for comics (bigger screen + retina display = KillerAwesome crispy Comixology experience) ... but I have read a few comics on the Nexus 7 and it's... wait for it... Good-enough ;)
Excellent commentary blunty -- Absolutely love the usage as one of my biggest gripes with android is the UI lag. How good is the stock browser in it? i hope the performance and scrolling / resize to be smooth. Cheers.
I've had one for a few months, same as new no problem. I do use my iPad more, but I also have a Samsung Slate running Windows 8 that has made both obsolete. I think of the iPad and Nexus 7 as reasonable placeholders until something truly usable with my everyday needs came along. After Effects, Photoshop for graphic design, video editing is now a take on the train / plane experience. Less wasted travelling hours - these new devices are all awesome anyway.
Absolutely... Poweramp Music Player has you covered. Amazing app and its only $4.99 for the Pro version or completely free for the lite version. You can adjust Bass, Treble, Tone, Limit, balance, stereo, mono and there are tons of preset equalizers. The Nexus 7's form factor make it much more portable so it depends if you want it to be your primary tablet. Downloaded W8 friday for PC. Looks good, just needs time to mature as a desktop and tablet OS. Nexus 10 looks fantastic! I'm getting it lol
He's right! Nexus 7 is a great deal on price for what you get, but its best to by it in a store. I had to return it twice. 1st for screen issues and then for speaker issues. Hopefully 3rd is the charm.
The Nexus 7 is the first tablet that's really got my attention. I always thought iPad and Galaxy Tabs were kind of cool but I never thought about getting one as it wasn't worth it for me. Most of the stuff I'd use it for I already have my laptop and iPhone. But at this price and this size, it's getting more and more tempting. The only thing holding me back is the lack of SD card lot. If Google/Asus did another version with one, I'm sold.
Just wanted to tell you that you have a wonder voice Blunty! As for the review, it isn't a perfect device but I'm the type of person that isn't all too picky about screen quality or productiveness, I might actually need something for college that I can simply use to check my email and read a few things on, it seems this might be perfect for that.
Ahh great! Can't wait! My hands are far too big for the 3ds. I've just started a new University course in the city, meaning a 1.5-2hr commute either way. Thanks :)
Great review, imo. I am literally leaving in a few minutes to go and pick up my Nexus 7 from UPS. Unfortunately, your point about buying it from a store is well taken - I hope mine does not have problems requiring service...I shall see. I also, have a Dell Streak 5, which I was slightly less then impressed with. I am hoping that the 7 will be a larger, better version of that - (minus the phone part of course). I too have an iPad (only a '2') that I use a LOT. This should be interesting.
So, not that I'm trying to be all "fan-pologist" here but I noticed you compared it to the iPad a lot, but never against something it was actually meant to compete with, namely the Kindle fire. I don't know if you have ever used one of those before, but I honestly was a little disappointed to not see you also compare it to something it was designed to compete with, as I think that is the comparison most people considering this device would ACTUALLY be wanting consideration on.
you can buy a USB adapter to expand memory to a USB flash drive. I have a 16gb nexus 7, and i absoloutley love it. I believe it is well worth the amount i paid!! The only flaw i have found is it does not have an option to have a data plan. Great video!!! Again, the nexus 7 is not up to par as far as screen resolution, and versatility compared to (high end tablets), but i guarantee anyone the nexus7 is a great investment. I highly recomend it!
A 32GB version is here. In the UK Argos store have it in their Christmas catalogue for the same prices as the 16GB. Available in about 2 to 3 weeks. The 16GB is reduced in price.
First off great review. It was very insightful. When I started, I expected a biased "Apple wins all" review, and the Samsung jab almost made me throw my Nexus in anger. But I stuck through it, and I give you my thanks. You gave the most thorough review for this device. I will say though, the N7 was made to compete with the Kindle Fire, Not the Ipad. That's a job for the Nexus 10.
Very good review sir. I liked the info. Isn't there a 32g version now? Would you say it's definitely worth it over a Galaxy tab 7inch? I've seen it does have GPS so does that mean we could use this as a Google sat nav? (perhaps if we use wifi to plot the route first...)
Getting better all the time. There's fewer apps in total compared to Apple's store technically, but both still have a metric fuckload of apps (most of them garbage TBH), but the selection & quality for Android apps is improving rapidly now.
Been using it light/medium use for the past 2 weeks and the battery is great at 4days 7.5hrs and it's only at 30% left after charging it. For $300 I can't recommend it enough! It's fast, speedy, no 3g (but don't really need it for me personally) and streams media just fine. 4.5/5 for me
The best reviews are the hands on kind, I used my brothers I Pad, and yes it is a great piece of technology, but impracticle for use out of the house. I have been using an i Pod 4th gen and it too is very good but just too damn small. I bought a Nexus 7 and as goldilocks said It's just right. I'm new to android but this Tablet is exactly what I have been looking for. It looks great, fits perfetly in my hand, and I have no complaints. I highly recomend this tablet
That's the best review ever !! .. I have just a couple of questions , first : i ordered a nexus7 from Google on 8th August and i wanna know when could i get it cause i cant wait to have it, second : does it ship with a pre-installed content or what?
Well done with review Blunty. Very honest. Keep true to your self and keep up with it. Really a shame that you can't review Samsung products anymore. I'm really a big fan of their products. Subbed :)

just wanted to compliment you on your depth in all the reviews you do
It has never crashed or hung at all, in fact, I've only rebooted it once since unpacking it (and that wasn't even because I "needed" to)

They are simply FAR too close together to generate any kind of stereo effect. It's like cramming both earbuds into one year, you just aren't going to experience a separated sound-stage.
i really was sitting on the fence on buying this as my first tablet and after this review I most definitely wil buy it thanks Blunty!!

I mentioned it in my unboxing... it's quite similar to stretched leather. Very pleasant really.
I'd prefer an e-ink screen for novels & long reads etc, it's just easier on the eyes, but the N7 a perfectly acceptable reading experience for ebooks.
I find it highly reassuring that you, who's opinions and reviews have influenced my product choice, were first skeptical and then completely turned around, and now love the device. That's very open minded, which basically every reviewer should be. Problem is, a lot of them are not. :)
Thanks for giving me an HONEST review. Can't find enough of those anymore.
Very good review. It is nice to find a channel that gives good consideration to reviews and not as you say just yelling about how good it is. Will be subscribing. Thanks!
this is the best review for the nexus 7 ive seen so far. very thoroughly discussed i must add
By far the best review i seen for anything. You really stress about the negative which is refreshing for a change.
I agreed with every word you said. Probably the most unbiased review I have ever heard. By the way I subscribed to your channel mainly coz I wanted to learn a thing or two from the way you talk, which is good oration. Was glad to watch your video. Thanks.
Excellent, fair review as per usual. Yours are ALWAYS the most useful. Especially the camera kit reviews.

You are one of the best reviewers that I've seen so far, really usefull and very entertaining review! Kudos!
Great review Blunty. Been dithering over this or...something else. This has won me over, the wife's getting an N7.
As someone who doesn't use tablets (and as of this post has no intention of using any time soon), I thought that this was a fair overview of the Nexus 7. It doesn't measure up to the iPad in most technical aspects, though that's because it's not trying to. The best, fairest (sp) and truest reiview of all on the internet. Jolly good job.
Love the review. It's really nice to see an unbiased one for once.

Top notch review. Honesty and clarity. Love it!... and I'm getting one!
I'm going hands-on with a 3DSXL tomorrow morning as a matter of fact. Look for the video coming soon ;)
It's a much closer call... but I think the iPad2 still has an edge in colour gamut.
Best review ever of any device. Honest and to the point. Thank you
He's right! Nexus 7 is a great deal on price for what you get, but its best to by it in a store. I had to return it twice. 1st for screen issues and then for speaker issues. Hopefully 3rd is the charm.
This was such a great review thank you so much for your "bluntness" about it ! Btw are you recording this with an e-pl 1? :)
Great review Blunty :) What is the name of that stand, and does it work with a case?
Nice review, is it good enough to read ebooks all day or retina is better ?
The Nexus 7 is the first tablet that's really got my attention. I always thought iPad and Galaxy Tabs were kind of cool but I never thought about getting one as it wasn't worth it for me. My hands are far too big for the 3ds. I've just started a new University course in the city, meaning a 1.5-2hr commute either way.
Thanks :)
Thanks for being brutally honest, good review, just what I was looking for.
You have a fantastic commentary voice btw. This was a very good review.
I like how you are honest about the device and I think i will get myself one of those now:)
Thank you! Now I have Nexus 7 and I must say you get so much for the price! This video helps me a lot...
So, not that I'm trying to be all "fan-pologist" here but I noticed you compared it to the iPad a lot, but never against something it was actually meant to compete with, namely the Kindle fire.
I don't know if you have ever used one of those before, but I honestly was a little disappointed to not see you also compare it to something it was designed to compete with, as I think that is the comparison most people considering this device would ACTUALLY be wanting consideration on.
i love this review, and your voice. u don't sound boring. i want a nexus so bad. good review!
Buying one tomorrow. Thanks for the review.
dude... your voice alone just earned you another sub
you can buy a USB adapter to expand memory to a USB flash drive.
I like this video. I have an 8 GB Nexus 7 and I agree on pretty much all the points. It's a great device and I really enjoy using it.
Great review as always Bluntly :)
One thing about storage, this device does support usb OTG. So you can hook up a usb stick through the micro-usb port
Very good, helpful review and a remarkably pleasant voice.
Thank you
Great, honest and unbiased review. I liked your channel very much. Subscribed.
Brilliant review Blunty!
Well done with review Blunty. Very honest. Keep true to your self and keep up with it. Really a shame that you can't review Samsung products anymore. I'm really a big fan of their products. Subbed :)
