Those type of areas especially “Zona Norte” the biggest danger for a tourist is to get too drunk and then you can become a target to get robbed. The gang murders are usually kept between each other.

I grew up in South Brooklyn in the early 90s so i'm no stranger to the vibe changing just one block down, but this is kind of crazy to be going on right in the middle of such a large and touristy city. curious about that undercover footage!

Two major reasons why you stood out like a sore thumb are because you’re a clean-cut Caucasian, and because you had a camera. Had you gone to Zona Norte without the camera and just got a feel for the area first, you would’ve realized it’s not that bad. Yeah you still would’ve stood out a bit, but the locals would’ve figured you for a tourist who was simply looking to have a good time in which case no one would’ve fucked with you.
I’d argue that the most dangerous neighborhood in Tijuana isn’t
Zona Norte, but in rather the poorer neighborhoods up in the hills closer to the outskirts of town. Areas where it’s a bit of challenge to get to and where only locals know of each other. In Zona Norte, there are dozens of reasons why you’d want to be there as a tourist, but in the poorer neighborhoods away from the centro, if you have no business being there, the locals will spot you and immediately start making calls and you will get rolled up on.

I’m an 18 year old girl who travels to Tijuana every month for humanitarian work so I know my way around the area. I try and completely ignore the city and downtown, and spend most of my time in east TJ. East TJ is not too dangerous in my opinion, just very poverty struck, there is no plumbing or adequate housing, but I have never felt unsafe. I am known in a neighborhood because of the deeds I do and everyone respects me and makes me feel safe. I am very close to a family down there, I consider them family of my own, and they make me feel safe when I visit. Although it is a little sketchy, I would say it has more poverty than dangerous activity. The “houses” I’ve seen are insane, It hurts my hurt to see people live in such poor conditions. Some people call these neighborhoods “slums”. It’s very sad to see how people live, but the people who live there are all very kind and have great hearts. I wouldn’t go to east TJ unless you know people or are doing humanitarian work.

Hi Aubrey is there anyway we could get in contact? I’m in San Diego and i’ve been trying to find someone (perhaps someone like you) that i could give clothes, toys, household stuff etc to take to the needy down there. I have relatives that live in Rosarito so whenever my mom goes down to visit i’ll fill the car with stuff and take it so they can distribute it amongst those that need it but sometimes i get the feeling they are not doing that and also my mom only goes there a rare occasions, i have clients that give me lots of things that people can use, so it would be great if i knew someone that goes there a little more often and could give stuff to those that actually need it, let me know if that’s something possible, thanks.

I'm from Ensenada (like an hour and a half from TJ) and visited Athens last year. I actually think Athens and Tijuana are similar. I was in an AirBnB a couple of blocks from the National Archaeological Museum and that area looked sketchy for me at first, everything full of graffiti but took me a less than an hour to realize that despite the look it was actually pretty safe. Tijuana isn't though, depending on the area it is actually dangerous

If you cross into Tijuana from the navy base in San Diego only do it in daylight have at least 2 others with you never get into any cabs plenty of prostitutes all over to satisfy the navy squids. Act like you've been there plenty of times and not walk around lost like this guy. Go to the bull fight ring with your 110 instamatic Kodak camera settle in drink their triple x beer root for the bull take pictures of the whole affair after 3 beers your pretty buzzed baking in the sun. The matador got gored in the thigh on the third set his white left pant leg turned red he cut both of the bulls ears off and held them up for his efforts we all screamed and gave him the thumbs down he took the one ear and threw it in the dirt visions of Roman gladiators dance in your head. He held the remaining ear up to at least get a consolation prize for his efforts. We felt sorry for the dead bull at his feet and gave him another thumbs down. A cart comes out and men wrap chains around the bulls head and drag it off. Men come out and raked the drag marks away. Every aspect captured on that 110 instamatic. Leaving with 5 x beers a piece in our system we decide to walk around and shop spending money and buying things helps the economy no one fucks with you your seasoned your one of them you just came from the bull arena. I bought a giant blanket that covers my queen sized bed that I still have to this day. We ate nothing with meat in it. And never drank the water. Coke or Pepsi. Plenty of leather items real cheap they love to haggle on price if you do not it's almost an insult to them. We never looked for prostitutes and never went into any bars. We shopped all day. Brought back an onyx chess set carvings that emulate the myan motif. Had a fabulous time in 1980. I respect the people. They have their bull quirks but are generally civil. To bad these drug cartels ruin everything.😮

I just visit TJ back in January and it was lovely. My gf and I, we stayed at her cousins place for 3 wks. Her cousin lives in a private residential area, and all we did was avoid the night life, and we only went to revolución once. We also always made sure to have her cousin, older male cousin, and/or aunt+grandpa whenever we went out of the city or the more touristy areas. I think as long as you mind your own business, don’t flash your money around, and generally keep your guard up- you should be fine in TJ. TJ is massive and there are so many little spots and plazas to go check out that aren’t in revolución or traditional tourist spots.
+ learn a little Spanish or if you can afford it, have a guide or translator. Not everyone speaks English and it’s just more convenient to know your basic vocab in Spanish. It makes ordering street food and going to oxxo’s hella easier.

When I was there a few years ago, I thought I was being told that generally nothing happens to tourists there, as they need them as clients, for drugs, prostitutes, and the clubs. So it’s ironically saver than it should be. But it’s crazy how easily you can stumble into the area; it begins right by the arch. I did see other videos where they secretly film. Not sure if your objective was to show you can get away with filming publicly, or simply to give the viewer a sense of the place.

State side recommendation: Shreveport, Louisiana. It’s got a strange mix of wealth and poverty and in many cases, separated by a couple of blocks. If you’re ever traveling to Texas or the south in general, it’s definitely an interesting place.

I posted this on your other TJ vlog but TJ has some very VERY interesting things they do in regards to tourists. I had mentioned how they will arrest you for practically anything just to make some money (this was long ago when I was just out of college) once we got into a car accident in TJ and were arrested (me and my best friend) and then the infamous getting lost and ending up in the ghetto's getting arrested. It was always for either 'sexy time' or cambio... I wonder if it's still the same for young people today as it was when I was still a teen and dancing on tables in the clubs on Revolución Blvd.

In 1977 I lived in Chula Vista and we would (walk) over the boarder easy as pie, no hassles ever...We would cross over a bridge over not finished highway and down below there would be guys sleeping on cardboard or dirty mattresses in the dirt that was supposed to be a highway of sorts...Tijuana was a really seedy place but cool enough for some teenagers to hang out, get drunk on Carte Blanca beer and eat cheap snacks from the street venders...I bought a silver bracelet that I still own to this day for $20.00 which at the time was a lot of money for a kid...Ah the good old days.

I've only been to Cancun but even being there was a shock to me. The thing I found appalling is the fact that you can go to a any pharmacy and buy barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opioids like Codeine, anabolic steroids, and many other hard drugs over the counter without prescriptions, it's nuts.

I'm from California and spent years visiting the Zona Norte regularly to see the ladies. The ONLY way to film safely is with a stealth cam setup that records what you see as you're walking but you aren't holding a camera. Lots of TJ videos here on YT are made like this. The Zona Norte is a VERY dangerous place with a criminal infrastructure that monitors EVERYTHING. Open filming is an absolute NO NO.

Italian might be described as superbly annunciated Spanish. Italians seem to take pride in speaking extremely clearly, which makes it one of the easiest languages to learn if not the easiest. That's why he said that you spoke like an Italian. Same thing happened to me in Tijiana, and I do speak Italian.
