  • Scottish senior accordion champion and award winning singer Brandon McPhee explains about the button key accordion. (Scotland)
Over quite a long period of time I always get a large number of questions from people regarding the instrument that I play and of course I love to play it and am utterly amazed by how many people aren’t familiar with what is called the 3 row button key accordion. (British Chromatic System) Different note out and in.
This video is a little introductory to the 3 row button key accordion, and features Jimmy Shand’s classic composition- The Auchtermuchty Gala March- stay tuned for even more videos coming soon.

When I saw you play in Kelso a few years ago, it was the first time I had seen a button key. I feel privileged that my first time at a F&C show, you were the headliner. And that I heard the late Jessie Bard sing.

Interesting bit of history Brandon. I have played Hohner button accordions here in Australia since I was a young lad. I still dream of owning a BCC# with stradella bass though, Good luck and keep up the great music.

Hi Brandon, my Brother Alex Stewart played a shand Marino, he also bought Will Stars box when Will sadly passed away. My Brother Alex played with Will and Jimmy Shand. My brother was based in Ecclefechan as he himself has passed away, and if you have never heard him play he is on you tube, I like your style Brandon and my brother would have as well.

Great explanation Brandon . I play a Shand Morino myself no way as good as you . Number 114 . I would like to know what year it was made. I bought it in 1971 second - hand. Jimmy

Hi Jimmy, thanks for getting in touch. On the bottom right hand back corner or your shand morino you should find a small serial number and send it to Hohner and they’ll be a small fee and they send you a certificate with the dispatch date. You could also send a photo of it to me at mcpheemusic@hotmail.com
And I may have a ruff idea. Thanks and all the best

Great informative video. In comparison to guitar how difficult to learn to play an accordion?

Thanks Pat for getting in touch. I think with anything it’s hard at first and it then becomes easier with practice. I wish I could play the guitar like the accordion but I find guitar more complicated. Thanks

Hello, I had two 2row Hohner Erica's, not at the same time but I had to sell them to help pay my mortgage. Both tuned C/C# I have also had a variety of 4 and 5 row chromatic accordions. I now have a 4 row cavagnolo chromatic. I have searched far and wide for a Hohner tuned C/C# to no avail. With the tuning of C/G or G/F you can't get all the accidentals and I like to play all sorts of music. Loved your playing, thanks for the explanation and your play. Regards, Dennis.

I am still finding it difficult playing the box that I bought from you. I can play tunes but the minute I start trying to play the bass I get all confused and can't remember what I am doing. I am getting frustrated. You mentioned JT Forbes shop in Dundee. I bought two piano accordions from there. So sad when I heard that it closed down xx

Can you not be too cheesy? A level down on the cheese scale please. Then you'd be great.
