Get a Hot Composter For Free With This Trick

  • This video sent me on quite a journey. I had a crazy idea of making a hot composter from a household item.
    The issue with cold composting is the restrictions on the items you can put into it. If you have a normal sized garden you don't generally produce enough waste to fill a cubic metre compost bin. That's the size to produce compost of the right temperatures to sterilize weeds and diseased plant matter.
    With a Hotbin costing around £200 I thought I'd give this a try and see how I got on.
    Let me know how you get on with it!
    If you want a neater looking one than this here is the link to Niall’s Homemade bin • How To Make Your Own H...

    Awesome idea - and a brilliant re-use of what is pretty awful waste if not recycled properly! You had me wondering halfway through because I thought it'd work a treat... and then it did! Worth every single one of those disco dance moves at the end! Boom!

      Haha I'm glad it helped you experience the journey with me! I got trolled by someone on TikTok because he said, "I wasted his time"! He didn't watch the end. Thank you for the kind words, Niall.

    I’ll bet he was well pleased you took the fridge. Saved him from having to fly tip it somewhere - only when his health improves though.

    BRILLIANT! I love how candid you are about the process, sometimes we have an "uh-oh" moment thinking we did it wrong or wasted all that time and effort. BUT look at you making it work!!! Loved the dance party at the end!

    Keep an eye out for someone chucking out old decking or wood effect hollow soffit boards for cosmetic cladding. The thin sheet metal on the fridge will rust pretty quick outdoors.

    • @tecmow4399
      @tecmow4399  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's still looking fine with the paint on it about a year on but I can see what you mean. It's not designed for the great british weather ! So far I can't any signs of it rusting though. I might clad it in the future or make a little shelter for it.

    Awesome idea that it’s in two sections. I’m dreading that day when I’ll have to tackle emptying my homemade hotbin that I had made according to Niall’s video. I was so overambitious that I made it 80cm deep and I cant reach the back from the front of the hatch door without getting half of myself into the bin itself. Will be quite a view if it collapses on top of me… 😂

    so weird I had this lightbulb moment the other day about using an old freezer and went looking to see if I could find anyone who had done it already.. I did not find then this video popped up (good old algorithm I guess) but I reckoned it had to work and better then the polystyrene type.. so thanks for this and I think you deserve the dance .. if I had tried myself and it worked I would be dancing too... Yay!!!!

    Great video, failing is as important as success, it pushes us to understand the process. Green waste is what generates the heat as it breaks down. It also generates the water needed for the bacteria. The brown waste, woodchip, cardboard etc absorbes the water to self regulate. It acts as a wick providing moisture when needed. You could even fill one side, leave it for a few weeks then turn it into the other side and start refilling the 1st side again. That means the stuff at the top that didnt get the heat, goes to the bottom to get cooked. The fridge is a great idea, shame about the dancing though.

    I loved this video, but respectably, who has space for a fridge in their garden, I certainly don’t. I have a tumbling composter for convenience and to suit my spacing, however I’m fully aware I’m not going to get any sort of temperature in it, so need to be careful what I add in.

      Whatever situation works for you. It’s true, not everyone can use a fridge or wants to have one. They’re also just lying around everywhere near where I live so they’re easy to get hold of for me. If your tumbler works well for you and it’s what you have space for that’s great too.
