  • Steve makes some changes in the hideout, erecting a new shelf, bagging some paperbacks, showing some new acquisitions and hanging a print...not that it will make that much room for him of course!

    That shelf construction video has my record highest retention figures! Not many watched, but they were committed!

      I watched it all. I was thinking 'I wish I still had a space that big to erect shelving,'- last time I did a job like that of that magnitude (outside work of course) was in the early 1990s!

      As a die-hard bibliophile who watched your entire shelf-construction vid, I can attest to that.

    That poster looks absolutely stunning! I was very lucky to pick up a copy of Dr. Adder -- the Grafton paperback edition -- in my local Oxfam for 1.99! I knew about it through your passionate presentation.

    Man, I've meaning to read Edward Bunker. Thanks for the trigger. I liked the film straight time. A great 70s crime film. Wasn't expecting the ending.

      It's WAY bigger under there than any time or relative dimension in space....

    I, too, have read all of K. W. Jeter's horror novels: fantastic stuff! 👌_In the Land of the Dead_ is particularly outstanding - I assume you have that, as it was published by Morrigan.
    And Joe R. Lansdale. Oh, Steve, you've GOT to read his crime novels. Even the titles of them are amazing: _Mucho Jojo, Bad Chili, Two-Bear Mambo, Honky Tonk Samurai_ etc... 👍
    I have a first paperback printing of _The Rats._ Pretty good condition, although the paper is definitely New English Lavatory! 🤣 However, I got James Herbert to sign it during his Guest of Honour appearance at World Horror Convention in Brighton, 2010. 🤗

      Yes, the Morrigan Jeter is superb. I've read the early Lansdale novels in that sequence, shame they never caught on here the way they should have. That TV series is quite good too, I thought.
      NEL - you just HAD to love them!

    Stephen, who publishes "Paperback News"? It's a great looking rag. Modest circulation? Nice to see there is a spirited SF community in your neighborhood and that there is also that cool publication. I, too, have an affinity for short story collections and prefer to read them nowadays. Mostly a practical thing due to limited free time but also good for my short attention span. Good to see your intro sporting all three of your books in the same frame. That's a first I think! Cheers.

      That's 'Paperback Fanatic' - if you look on Jules Burt's channel, he very recently filmed two interviews with the editor/publisher and JB sometimes writes for the 'zine. It has been suggested I write something for it, but I seem to have no time these days...

    Do you have a link for those Amazon shelves shown whilst you’re bagging? I’m similarly constantly running out of space and they look like they could be useful in storing some extra books in odd places.

      YT removes any non-TH-cam links. They're called Shilipaijc small desktop bookshelf. Amazon UK.

    Since watching this video, I’ve been looking around and trying to figure out which Willeford book is the best intro to his work. Any particular favorites you might recommend? Thanks as always, Stephen!

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal
      @outlawbookselleroriginal  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      OK, as you don't say where you are, I can't recommend on the basis of in-print availability. Broadly, his work falls into two tranches: the early novels, which are varied, short and pulpy- but literate. Late in his life he wrote a tetralogy of novels about a Miami police detective called Hoke Moseley- these do the Leonard thing, but are far more realistic, dour yet funny. In the UK, a Hoke Moseley omnibus is in print at £20. There have been numerous issues of a three- book omnibus of singletons, which is as good a place to start as any. It includes 'Pick Up' -which is a good sleaze novel with a difference - 'The Burnt Orange Heresy' which is a superb art-world forgery thriller which I'd say has affinities with Highsmith's 'Ripley Under Ground' but not as good (it was filmed a few years back) and best of all 'Cockfighter', which is a superb and highly original novel set in - you guessed it- the world of cockfighting in the Southern USA (there is an excellent feature film with Warren Oates and Willeford himself, but it is banned in the UK due to actual cockfighting scenes- I have a US DVD). Get either of these omnibuses and you're laughing. If you can find singletons, go for 'Miami Blues' (the first Hoke book, but not the best, that's 'Sideswipe') and/or 'Cockfighter'.

    • @kylepinion
      @kylepinion 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@outlawbookselleroriginal funny enough I'm in Georgia not terribly far from where Cockfighter was shot. It's been on my list to watch for a while after catching Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop a few years ago and really enjoying it (for my money, a better film than Easy Rider). Ironically, that's a slightly more difficult one to get around here, but can be had second-hand it seems. Miami Blues looks to be the easiest get or a singleton of The Burnt Orange Heresy.
      Will get to it, thanks again for taking the time!

      @outlawbookselleroriginal  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kylepinion No problem. I never got on with 'Two Lane Backtop', sadly, but I love 'Cockfighter'. 'Miami Blues' was filmed in the late eighties- not that well- and it's a fun book.

    A better crime fiction writer than Elmore Leonard...? wow, I must hunt down some Willeford then...

    • @outlawbookselleroriginal
      @outlawbookselleroriginal  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is with the caveat that Leonard has never worked for me- Willeford is similar, but far more convincing and styitsically superior, I'd say.
