    Of all the interviews I've seen of Jerry Lewis talking about Dean Martin, he has never once trashed Dean Martin. In several interviews he has said that it was he who might not have made it without Dean. He was was a pantomime or "dummy act" as he called it, and basically there wasn't much of a future in that alone. He said that Dean probably would have made it on his own eventually. Have you read Jerry's book, Dean and Me? He never talks about Dean in a negative light at all.

    Thanks, Donazify! Please let your fellow members of Jerry's Army know that they are both on the bio.com website, as well as here- their upload is from the broadcast master, so it's a bit higher quality... :)

    The watch the Dean was wearing, and they mention at 8:15 was actually given to him by Jerry.

    Give up on it guys. These guys broke up 60 years ago! That's how big that breakup was and still people take sides! Neither was a saint that's for sure! Both of them could bad mouth the other. THEY had however gotten over the bad blood years ago. So should fans. Jerry made Dean look smoother. Dean made Jerry funnier. Who knows if either would have made it without the other. Who cares? They DID make it as a team and both had great solo careers later. Two of the absolute greatest!

    Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis only hosted 28 episodes altogether and that is what I'm referring to. This is episode 21 of the 28 episodes they did. You might be referring to the episode number for that season only.

    I wasn't discrediting those facts. Jerry Lewis talked about that in his book as well. I have seen that biography before, as well as Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin's individual biographies. The time Jerry got fired was like a year before he and Dean even got together. I was talking about when they actually got together. That was when he suggested to D'Amato, Dean as a replacement for a fired singing act. Both of their individual biographies are on here as well, and that's where I got my info from.

    BWAHA! It's in part one of our A&E Rat Pack Bio- Jules Blumberg, the bartender at the 500, and Grace D'Amato, Skinny's Sister in Law, And that wild and crazy guy Sonny King tell the story of Wolfie, Skinny, Jerry, Sophie (Tucker), and... DINO! LMAO!

    This is amazingly clear for a 1954 NBC kinescope copy! I know DuMont had the Electronicam all-electronic kinescope system, which looked very good, like this. Wonder if that was the system used here?

    Just want to clarify- it was not Skinny D'Amato who'd canned Jerry at the 500 Club... it was Irvin Wolf- "Wolfie", the Club's manager. He drank a quart of King William IV every day... Jerry's voice and all his noise drove him nuts- he must have been permanently hung over...

    Didn't Jerry say that they "broke-up" because in every magazine, newspaper and what not it was only Jerry Lewis that, Jerry Lewis this, and there was no Dean Martin in there?

  • @Donazify
    @Donazify  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe you misunderstood what he said in the interview, I don't know. Also it was Jerry who convinced Skinny D' Amato to have Dean on the same billing with him in the first place. I'm not sure where you got your facts from.

  • @UCKABAH
    @UCKABAH 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could tell Dino was starting to get pissed off at Lewis around this time. The story regarding this episode was the show was seeming to go into OT and Lewis, starting to have control over the duo, decided to cut Dean's final number. As you can see, they didn't go into OT. That is the reason why they ended the show (among other things) with Jerry's drum solo and them jumping up and down singing 'Palmolive Soap' for 5 minutes. Even Dino got in a dig at Jerry just after 45:24 for that.

    • @steph13326ify
      @steph13326ify 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Mapes I think it was probably very difficult to guess at how much time they'd need for their sketches, since so much adlibbing went into them. between a number from dean and a sketch where they both shined, the sketch would be the better choice.

    • @michaelmapes4119
      @michaelmapes4119 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really...Even the most recent interviews Jerry stated that the fans wanted to see him instead of Dean singing, so I think it WAS a takeover by Jerry. Usually in those days, they would cut a song short and start rolling the credits if they were running too long - They just didn't cut songs, sketches in those days like they do now. Jerry, for some reason, thought of himself a world class drummer and nearly wastes 5 minutes of fluff.

      No doubt you're right there, I'm sure the audience did want more comedy than musical numbers. I know I fast forward over them most of the time just watching them here on TH-cam. Sadly, I know you're right about the audience liking Jerry more. They were simply blind to the fact that it was their chemistry that made them so hot. The saying goes that great acting comes from "the other guy" but the same goes for comedy: you're only as good as what your partner gives you. As far as Jerry playing the drums goes, I think their riffing at the end here is just as entertaining as their adlibbing in sketches. The spontaneity of both is what makes them so entertaining.

    • @Donazify
      @Donazify  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      As much as I love Dean, I'd rather see comedy than watch him sing. Now if Dean was singing and doing comedy as he would do later on his own show, then it would be more exciting. Also you are misrepresenting what Jerry said. He was talking about kids specifically , wanting to see the comedy rather than Dean singing in their films (he wasn't talking about CCH or their live act). This is true. The singing and the love scenes slowed down the comedy and sometimes the story of their films.

    • @Donazify
      @Donazify  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dean said the same thing in interviews during the 70's that the kids went for the popcorn when he started to sing in their films or when the love scenes happened. It's not very nice to imply that Jerry is lying about Dean, when he loved and respected him tremendously.

    I misunderstood nothing. Dean Martin's roommate of 5 years introduced Jerry Lewis to Dean Martin. Lewis had been canned by Skinny D'Mato and told him to get the hell out of his club. Sony King introduced them and said Jerry Lewis was in awe of Martin. If it wasn't for Martin Jerry Lewis would be nothing. Search on you tube "Rat Pack Documentary narrated by Danny Aiello. Primetime Emmy winning biography of the Rat Pack.

      Dean would have been nothing without Jerry as well at that time! He was in his 30's almost and doing practically nothing! They met at the right time, right place, and helped each other.

      What a sad life you have if you keep hating someone you don't even know. What problems do you have? Those two boys loved and respected each other even after the breakup. You are a poor person if you continue, after 60 years and more, to take sides against Jerry. You toxic Dean Martin fans are absolute evil.

    I stopped liking Jerry Lewis when I saw him interviewed and basically trashed Dean Martin saying that Martin would not have been anything if it wasn't for Lewis. Skinny D'Mato had fired Lewis from his club to replace him with Martin. Lewis is lucky that Martin was there or we never would have known who Lewis was. What a jerk.
