Love how Inara is so *sure* it's Mal he's talking about, and when she finds out he's talking about Jayne, it's literally the only time we see Inara visibly flustered, taken aback, and audibly sputterring. Makes the moment stand out that much more, and I lose it laughing every time.
I think it's case in point of the terrific character work in this series. The moment lands so well because Inara's composure has been established so thoroughly.
SAAAAME. Morena's acting is something special all throughout the series, but it's the nuance in her facial expressions that really amazes me. The "yes, that-- that would be bad" moment is one of my top three quick visual moments of hers that I just love. The other two are that smirk she and Kaylee share right after "She hit me!" at the end of Shindig, and then that ... THAT moment in Serenity (no spoilers) when she first meets the antagonist.
One of my favourite moments was on a bus back from a university game full of drunk students, someone started singing the Firefly theme song and the whole bus joined in

Not just the cancellation, but Fox actively holding onto the rights so that nobody else could continue it. It took years of petitioning just to finish it off with Serenity. It's an odd situation though with Firefly having so much potential but even Serenity barely broke even at the box office.
I actually always liked that Jayne has the unlikeable edge to him. It makes him a different kind of character. And I liked Whedon's willingness to leave him this way for the most part.
Yeah, most 'morally gray' characters seem to either be good guys w/ a bad attitude, or bad guys w/ relatable motives. Jane is actually both a bad and a good guy depending on the circumstances.
Consider watching: Dr.Horribles Sing Along Blog. Also written by Joss Whedon (Firefly director) and his brother. It’s a really clever short movie musical that the two of them wrote, produced, and directed during the Hollywood writer strike. Really well done. Nathan Fillion is in it as well.
YES! And she can knock it out in one sitting. One night I had a double feature of Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and the "Once More With Feeling" musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
That talk between Mal and Jayne at the end of the episode is my favorite moment in the whole series. It showed Jayne's vulnerability and Mal's wisdom and compassion. Such a beautiful moment.
No, I never learned the "Mud" song, but I sure as hell learned the "Jayne" song. This episode does have one my favorite lines in the entire show though: "Anyone who has ever had a statue made for him, was one kind of son of bitch or another." I don't know why that one stuck with me so much, but it did.
It resonated with me too. I think because it says that people are just people. People with statues, they were neither good, nor bad. They were just recognized for doing one thing exceptionally well.
This is my favourite episode, Simon and Kaylee having their moment, River fixing Book's bible and running away from his hair, lol. The Jayne stuff is just bonus :D
Nathan Fillion went on from this to the TV show "Castle" eventually and he brought in so many small little Easter eggs to the first season or two playing off Firefly cause he loved it so much. From speaking Chinese, the blue gloves at a crime scene, think theres a whole youtube video of all his littel nods to this show in Castle.
"pinch me I must be dreaming" I loved Zoe's reactions first to her drunk husband and then when she sees Jayne in town, I love all their joking banter, all the characters have such real chemistry!
Gina Torres, who plays Zoe, is an outstanding actress. Check out "Suits" if you want to see more of her acting. It's an all-together different kind of character.
@@rudewalrus5636 From what I heard, if they were not fimling in the lounge/kitchen on the set (Serenity was two contiguous sets), the crew would hang out in the lounge between takes instead of going to their trailers.
I was thinking the same thing. There is something about this show that, even after all this time, by the time you get to this episode, turns you into a browncoat. Is usually when people say... "I can't belive they cancelled this show so early." And "It makes me so sad Im half way through the season." Followed by "I really love these characters."
That's one thing I like about her reaction/reviews. She doesn't over-talk and critique, pick it apart, try too much to guess or find plot holes. Just really honest reactions from getting pulled in. I think what pulled me into being a "Goldie" (which I think is what she should call her Subscribers) was Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope when (spoiler alert) Han comes in at the end of the Death Star attack and she got pulled in and yelled: "Yeah Han!!!"
my gf hates me for being a nerd. it took me a long time to convince her to watch this show. after the second episode, she was hooked. she even yelled and screamed at me "why did they cancel this show!? this is the greatest show ever!!"
Out of Gas, (next?) is probably the best one for introducing Backstory. Most shows have the "Introductions" first, but this works so well, as you get to learn more about characters that you have already formed attachments to, as well as allowing surprises that wouldn't have made sense if you saw it before learning about the crew.
Everything you said at the beginning of the video. That is why there have literally been petitions to bring back Firefly for almost two decades. Love the reactions. Thanks.
Jayne is a very tactile man. Keep your eye on him in every scene he's in. He's always touching and/or sniffing something. It's part of his charm. "That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth." Oh, Jayne, you scallywag.
It also is Adam's way to keep the camera focused on him in scenes. He said he picked up the idea early in his career. Even when he is not the central focus of the scene.
I'm always so excited to watch you experience this show for the first time, because I get to do it vicariously through you all over again. So thank you, this is really great :) Also, you should watch The Abyss! It's a really fantastic '80s James Cameron movie with an awesome cast. I truly enjoy watching the honest reactions to the humor, the sorrow and the suspense, and you happen to be one of the most emotive I've seen. I'm looking forward to you continuing this series.
I kind of like that there was no other seasons of this. It never got stale, never jumped the shark, never had its budget cut, never got stuck with a bad writer. Just left the stage while at its peak leaving us with something great and no bad memories following it around.
It only got stuck with delusional, obtuse, ignorant, and clueless morons that thought they were smart enough to be studio Executives canceling the show when they weren't qualified to run a hot dog cart. I hope Karma has been kind to them - Not!
Speaking of Firefly, another insect title you should react to is The Fly (1986). You won't be disappointed, a horror movie with actual drama and it's one of few movies with Jeff Goldblum where he plays the main lead, as he is otherwise usually part of an ensemble cast and it's one of if not THE best performance of his career. It was both critically acclaimed at its release and did very well at the box office, but has since sadly almost fallen into obscurity. It is definitely worth a watch.
This episode is very funny but it's the sad moments that really stuck with me. Especially Jayne's little talk with Mal at the end there. And ending the episode with a soft instrumental reprise of "Hero of Canton" just makes the moment perfect.
Brown coats forever! I love this episode! I wish this series had gone on longer. I read the comics and the novels and if you enjoy both the show and the movie (when you watch it) and give them a read if you are interested. They really do a great job continuing the story!
This is probably my favorite episode of the series. So many great moments and I love the parallel of Book talking about faith in God/the Bible and then the Mudders' need to believe in Jayne.
Jayne: "I think I really made a difference in their lives...Me, Jayne Cobb." Mal: "I know your name, jackass." LOVED that line lol (it's not in the video)...Nathan Fillion delivers it to perfection.
Great to hear how much you’re enjoying it. One word: “Out of Gas” is going to be a roller coaster for you. It is perhaps my favorite episode of the whole season.
This was my favorite episode of the show. It comes down to the scenes with Shepherd and River, going over how Faith fixes you rather than understand and fixing faith, and then Shepherd's Albert Einstein hair, and just how out of the ordinary it is for Jayne to be a folk hero.
Natalie. I had the worst day I've had in a long time. Your reaction made my day tolerable and I so enjoyed the reaction and commentary. Thank you for helping a humble mudder. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
Hit like before the add even finished playing. This is one of my two favorite episodes. When your finished with the series you need to find the DVD set Easter egg Video of Adam Baldwin singing the Jaynestown song.
I can't finally start letting loose what I know (because they are no longer spoilers). Accordingly, Joss Whedon wrote both the title song, and co-wrote The Ballad of Jayne Cobb (aka The Hero of Canton)
After a horrible week loosing my fur baby this episode appears to cheer me up. Loved your reaction to it. This episode had so much real world links back then as it does now.
the writers of this show are fantastic. goddamn, i am so jealous! the only thing i ever got was a stupid poetry award. i would kill to write for a show like this!!
I love this episode.. this is why you needed to watch the episodes in order so you can appreciate the character arcs and care about them. I used to sing this song when I was trying to burp my kid.
How can you spot the Firefly fan? Ask: "do you like Firefly"? Response: Says "Oh, I love Firefly!" = 25% Uses "shiny" in a sentence = 50% Puts on Jayne's beanie = 75% Jumps on table and sings "Hero of Canton" = 100%
I won't spoil how or why, but there is a funeral in one of the later episodes and the music composed there was composed as a send-off for the show itself. Super emotional! Loving watching along with you, such a great show
A great episode, so many moments. The eyes following, the madness of doc, drunk wash, river hiding in the hold from sheppard's hair are a few of my fav's. the next reactions im waiting for, "out of gas", "war stories" and the first few scenes in " the message" . Great reaction as always. keep it up.

I had a rough day, and it did my heart good to see you discover this hilarious, thoughtful, and endearing episode. This is my sister's favorite of the series. She just can't get enough of Jayne's song.
Aw, i wanted to see Nat's reaction to the scene at the end with Kaylee and Simon, where she says "So when we made love last night" (or very close to that) and then says "you're such an easy mark" lol
For something different and funny you should watch the movie “Tucker and Dale vs Evil” it has Alan Tudyk in it. It’s really quite campy and just a good bit of fun!
I think the next episode is my favorite. This was Joss Whedon's masterpiece. Yeah, it was sad. There was an official forum where the actors hung out with the fans. Adam Baldwin was there a lot. He really is a nice guy. Anyway, "Out of Gas" was my fave. P.S. the chair was too short for him hence the legs are more spread.
"and then [the townspeople] are all gonna hate him" prediction gave me a bittersweet smile. I love this episode so much even though it hurts. Like Book says, "It's not about making sense. It's about believing in something." Underrated side plot.
Love how Inara is so *sure* it's Mal he's talking about, and when she finds out he's talking about Jayne, it's literally the only time we see Inara visibly flustered, taken aback, and audibly sputterring. Makes the moment stand out that much more, and I lose it laughing every time.

Jayne: "I think I really made a difference in their lives...Me, Jayne Cobb."
Mal: "I know your name, jackass."
LOVED that line lol (it's not in the video)...Nathan Fillion delivers it to perfection.
Great to hear how much you’re enjoying it. One word: “Out of Gas” is going to be a roller coaster for you. It is perhaps my favorite episode of the whole season.
Thanks. I really look forward to these. This should be extra-fun. Here we go.
Your compassion for the cast and crew affected by the show's cancellation shows the quality of your heart.
00:16:01 Natalie: "I'm a little sad..."
Me: yeah, well, keep those tissues handy. Joss Whedon likes to put your heart through a wringer.
I guess I know why that eats at me so.
I don't mind when Whedon puts my heart through the wringer, but when FOX does it . . .
@@thatoneguyagain2252 heh, Fox doesn't put your heart through a wringer, it uses a stake and treats you like a vampire
This is defiantly my favorite episode. I love every single thing about it.
Bummed we didn't get a reaction to "Just keep walking Preacher man!"... : (
Or "too much hair!"
Hell yes, Shepherd. I'd be in there with her, if I didn't have things to do!
He doesn’t understand too much snow on the root his brains are in danger lol
maybe in the watch-a-long version?
After a horrible week loosing my fur baby this episode appears to cheer me up.
Loved your reaction to it.
This episode had so much real world links back then as it does now.
Finally Jaynestown! Evan Dorkin is a writer who deserves more attention in this world.
He wrote Milk and Cheese. He is the best.
the writers of this show are fantastic. goddamn, i am so jealous! the only thing i ever got was a stupid poetry award. i would kill to write for a show like this!!
Wait… Evan Dorkin!? My love of this episode only grows the more I learn.

I love this episode.. this is why you needed to watch the episodes in order so you can appreciate the character arcs and care about them. I used to sing this song when I was trying to burp my kid.
Probably my favorite episode of Firefly.
I've been an extra in a movie with Adam Baldwin. He also stomped me in chess, he is like super good.
How can you spot the Firefly fan?
Ask: "do you like Firefly"? Response:
Says "Oh, I love Firefly!" = 25%
Uses "shiny" in a sentence = 50%
Puts on Jayne's beanie = 75%
Jumps on table and sings "Hero of Canton" = 100%
Or they just randomly throw Mandarin into a sentence, jishi ni ting bu dong.
Does doing all four at once count?
^ Gets a Blue Sun tattoo = ?
You ask me that question the answer is probably going to be "Two by two, hands of blue, Gorramit!"
That's a Jayne fan. A Firefly fan would sing Mal's song.
My absolute favorite episode by far, really fun watching it with you!
This is my second favorite Firefly Episode :) so happy
I won't spoil how or why, but there is a funeral in one of the later episodes and the music composed there was composed as a send-off for the show itself. Super emotional!
Loving watching along with you, such a great show
At least we got Serenity, Im hype to watch you watch the movie
A great episode, so many moments. The eyes following, the madness of doc, drunk wash, river hiding in the hold from sheppard's hair are a few of my fav's. the next reactions im waiting for, "out of gas", "war stories" and the first few scenes in " the message" . Great reaction as always. keep it up.
“But Jaynes about to get recognised isn’t he, he’s totally going to get recognised” ..................... 🎶JAYNE, THE MAN THEY CALL JAYNE🎶
😮😲😳🤯
Such a great show. Not one bad episode and this is one of my favorites!
Finally! Now I can sing it loud, and sing it proud!
Jayne! The man they call, Jayne!
He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne
Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin'
He saw the mudders' lament
And he saw the magistrate takin'
Every dollar and leavin' five cents
So he said “you can't do that to my people”
He said “you can't crush them under your heel”
So Jayne strapped on his hat
And in 5 seconds flat
Stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal
He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne
Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned 'round his plane
And let that money hit sky
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
The man they called Jayne
He stole away our pain
And headed out for the stars
He robbed from the rich
And he gave to the poor
Stood up to the man
And gave him what for
Our love for him now
Ain't hard to explain
The hero of Canton
The man they call Jayne.
I had a rough day, and it did my heart good to see you discover this hilarious, thoughtful, and endearing episode. This is my sister's favorite of the series. She just can't get enough of Jayne's song.
DC's the Swamp Thing got canceled before the first episode aired, and was an awesome series.
This show lines up perfectly with your personality.
I watch way too many reaction vids. WAY too many. But I'm really glad I found your channel. Super fun. One of my faves now.
It’s just so GOOD. Stay shiny!
"and then [the townspeople] are all gonna hate him" prediction gave me a bittersweet smile. I love this episode so much even though it hurts. Like Book says, "It's not about making sense. It's about believing in something." Underrated side plot.
