I try a Bmw R1250GSA that has been "Hilltopped" (Ecu flashed) - What did I think ? 🤔

  • Hilltop are a UK company that re flash your bikes ecu.
    Costs between £250-300 for an authorised installer to do it, or you can go and take your bike to Geoff and the team at their HQ.
    My Africa Twin had been Hilltopped and that ran really well.
    If you like the mirrors here’s the link to them, as several people have asked 😊
    www.wunderlich...
    So, do I get the GS topped?
    There was a 2022 GSA 1250 that had been topped and was at my local BMW dealership. Actually it was the CEO's own bike!
    He kindly allowed me to take it for a ride to see how good the ecu flash was.
    Certainly revs like a 2 stroke now, kind of. First real go on the big GSA and as it had a fresh set of knobbly tyres on it (handles differently, to put it mildly) it all felt a bit foreign, so I took it easy .
    Lots of variables for the brain to digest , GSA, exhaust, bar risers etc and then decide if the ecu flash did anything.
    Benefits of an ecu flash are that it smooths out all the lumps and bumps in the torque curve and makes throttle response quicker, better fuel economy etc
    Will I get mine done....stay tuned.
    More info at Hilltops website:
    www.hilltopmoto...
    Kind thanks to the chaps at The Mansell Collection, pop in for a chat or coffee, especially if you are a biker on holiday visiting Jersey😁

    You won't be disappointed if you do.
    I've had two of my bikes done, a Thruxton R and a Street Triple.
    For those of you who remember what a bike feels like with a well sorted set of carbs, that's one of the things having your bike Hilltopped will do.
    Smoother more predictable throttle response. Believe it or not, better mpg but overall a bike that wants to rev with no flat-spots.
    It's difficult to articulate the difference as you're probably used to riding around the flat-spots and how your engine responds, or doesn't.
    My 1250 will be with Geoff soon, for him to work his magic.

      I did enjoy the bigger GS, and it revved quite freely too, as one of the lads in the dealership said, his GS used to revile the old 2 strokes after he had his done 😂

    I remain sceptical about the hilltop claims ,all the dyno runs I've seen appear to have artificially low before figures thus inflating the percentage increase,as for smoothness on the 1250 a very experienced dyno operator that tests for the magazines stated the fuel air ratio was absolutely spot on ,one the best he's tested in 30 odd yrs ,I think its a case of the emperors new clothes for many ,no one's gonna spend hundreds of pounds then say oooh that's worse 🤷‍♂️

You can buy the remap and do the ECU flash yourself, they have a video showing you how it's done. You can also swap back to the OEM map if you had to in the case of an engine warranty issue

    I am very skeptical to this scheme. There almost no chance you can hack into a BMW ECU these days. If you not piggy bag it and get a fake lambda / O2 censoring, the ECU will just regulate any changes back to normal. Not a single neutral before and after dyno could confirm any changes people claim to have experienced. But who knows.

    • @darkdestroyer6634
      @darkdestroyer6634 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. Your understanding is incorrect.
      One simple example:
      If I overwrite a target AFR cell in a map how will the ECU reset it? I've literally changed the value the ECU is trying to hit.
      Yes their is some adaptation over time but that applies whether you're on stock or modded map. The key thing is that I have changed the target.
      I wouldn't recommend Hillside though. If I were after a BMW remap I'd probably go with Brentuning or BHP UK. They are much clearer on how/ what they change in order to address issues they've identified.

    • @ogoshikimura5621
      @ogoshikimura5621 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@darkdestroyer6634 well that could be very simple, after you restart the bike the IC will re-write the map if a certain checksum or parameter isn't met. And I am certain there are 100 more ways the manufacturer can protect the ECU from being hacked. Your 2nd part is actually very telling: "there is some adaptation" - well if you re-map it there shouldn't be any. When googling Hilltop remap, I see only "scam" - and so far I have never seen a before / after dyno chart. People keep saying by changing the fueling the quick shifter will work better from 2nd to 3rd, but that is hard to believe, because that is a mechanical issue to begin with.
      I did rode a Brentuned bike back to back with my GS, and found absolutely no difference at all. But the owner kept insisting the difference is night and day. All legit tuners I know shake there. head and say they don't do GS's or K1600 with EU5, so maybe there is more to it. Or maybe not.

I will more than likely get my baby GS topped when I bet back from work/holiday , but I will do a few roll ons etc to have a base line to compare the standard ecu with the remapped one. I think the gsa has different geometry up front?
