  • In 1983 I saw the Quantel Paintbox for the first time at a tradeshow in Sydney. By Februrary 1984 I was living in America working for Quantel demonstrating and helping develop the Paintbox. This is an old video, possibly one of the first demo videos, featuring Martin Holbrook, the first Paintbox artist. It's off an old U-Matic tape so the qualities not great but it's an amazing look back over 31 years ago!!

This looks so much more user friendly and easier to use than any art software I've used on the pc. And looks way faster than my Wacom pen, and my system cost a bloody fortune!

+Ste Foster Quantel truly cost a fortune.

+flaggerify We mustn't forget that. This was the days when only the appreciated few where able to work with this beast, and it wasn't so much an artistic thing as it had more commercial/industrial use as opposed to those tooling around on Wacom tablets of today.

Except it's not. I worked some time as a "paintbox operator" in broadcast. Your average paint application in the late 90s was more feature-rich and user friendly than the basic PB. Think about it...no layers, no undo. ;o)

I actually have one of these sitting here in my livingroom :o) It was taken out of the BBC Ellstree studios a while ago then passed on to me for restoration. We have a lot of work to do on it, the whole system needs re-capping for a start. We have the hard drive back up and running, although obviously the data is untested. It has all the accessories including 2 tablets and the external 8 inch floppy :o) I've got a training video which Quantel have given me permission to put on TH-cam too..

Fantastic. I've been fascinated by these machines for years, and was lucky enough to win a Paintbox V auction in 2005-6. Fully functional, although the main technical challenge was getting it to work with a standard television (Obtaining the requisite BNC->SCART adapter was the easy part). Also have some interesting Quantel videos, including a Harriet demonstration where they create a sting for 'The Living Daylights' and an intro for Bobby Davro's programme at the time.

Brilliant. I put an old paintbox a couple of years ago. I must get around to plugging it in and seeing if it still works!

...this is the very system that worked on shows such as Dr Who, tripods, knightmare, the weather lol. Nice to see it in action :o)

The man narrating this image has a very subtle sense of humour :-)

Yup. Martin Holbrook had a very sharp wit. He's really 'upping' his natural British pronunciation. RIP

Wow, your back must have suffered ;o) When I spoke to them about it, they said they did buy the first one sold back and had it for about ten years before it dissapeared during a move :o( Working very slowly on the restoration so we can take app precautions :o)

Great to see you starting it up. I remember lugging this whole kit around North America doing demos primarily for Television stations. I'd love to see it if you get it up and running completely. Did Quantel ever keep a running version for posterity? I tried several times to get them to repurchase the first one sold to the Weather Channel in Atlanta.

Hi Tony, there are some massive efforts to bring back the magic of the DPB-7001, now in 2022 forty years after it changed digital art. I have one that i have restored to a working state with the help of many ex-Quantel engineers. Would you be able to make contact with us?

This in 1981! Wow, must have cost a million dollars!

Close, but prices dropped quickly in the following years. I worked with a later model (and some other effect devices from Quantel) in the late 80s and prices were down to about $80,000 by that time.

don't forget that by 1985 similar results were possible with a 286 based PC custom equipped workstation for 30,000 in 1985....and then the REAL digital multimedia for normal people (even wealthy middle class) was via an Amiga 1000, graphics tablet, digiview and digipaint package for 2000 quid in 1986. On a 14 inch portable CRT or on recorded video tape the differences between the Amiga 1000 solution and a small country's budget priced Quantel was wiped out. The mid 80s was the true revolution in getting digital multimedia into the hands of the people.

"the REAL digital multimedia for normal people (even wealthy middle class) was via an Amiga 1000, graphics tablet, digiview and digipaint package for 2000 quid in 1986"
Digiview was 1986 but Digipaint was 1987, not 1986. You aren't going far with an Amiga with only HAM6 mode for company. OK to sit with and doodle in your own bedroom, but that's about it.

Not really true, you can get better than 1990s SVGA quality still images on a CRT with a base Amiga displaying my favourite fantasy/sci-fi art images and the slideshows are out there for all to see. There were even 24bit internal graphics upgrades for the Amiga 500 (Avideo 24).

I was at school with Martin Holbrook, and he was a bully. No matter how good this Quantel is, I wanted to punch a hole in the screen when I see him demonstrating it.

David NicholsonCole If he was like most childhood bullies, he was probably going through serious hell at home and lashing out at classmates because they seemed like they had a 'charmed' life in comparison -- in other words, somebody far more worthy of pity than rage. (At least, that's how I feel about the guys that bullied me severely for a couple of years when we were kids.)

why isn't there a demonstration of the paintbox not done by a rambling british boomer who stretches out videos out to 30 minutes?
