I prefer most English names because that's what I heard first tailmon just sounds weird to me but gallantmon/dukemon are identical where I live so which ever is used doesn't matter for me.... unlike tailmon lol. I guess thats just how it is with Different cultures and languages.
As a kid who didn’t grow up in America, the names of the Digimon weren’t changed, so we got the original names, that are meant to target the whole world and not just an specific area. Now, as a language professional, when we translate or adapt something to another language, we most likely lose the original idea behind the planned words. Thank you for sticking to the original terms, this is really precious of you.
@@Khyze I agree with you. Not all the original names target the worldwide public, some of them make more sense in Japan, like Yukidarumon (as you pointed out), Agumon Hakase or the banchos.
I agree! I think there are some cases where we can forgive and jus shrug it off! But some others? Jus, like, "sure, fine, whatever..." I mean Tamers only had one or two minor changes, but I'm used to it by now! I suddenly get the distinct impression 4Kids has conditioned me to accept name changes! Crafty buggers...

It annoys me that in the US we had things like Gatomon > Tailmon, Myotismon > Vamdemon or MaloMyotis vs Belial Vamde, they turned Bombmon into an Orange and he's Bombernanimon in the games still, in the show hes Citrusmon or Cherrybomon and there's 0 consistency. There was Stingmon instead of Waspmon for some reason. We got Ciel sistermon but the Black one still appears in earlier games. Ebidramon was supposed to be Shrimpmon, for the longest time I thought he was a Dramon digimon because of it. Ebidra is just the word for shrimp in Asian nations. We didn't get official local names until Digimon World DS and 2010 Era digimon series. It totally confused me when all the biblical names only, or things that could be biblical in nature, were changed to totally unrelated BS that didn't convey the backstory or the power of the digimon who held that title.
I don't care if you use Japanese names or not I just like watching the videos you make plus everyone has their own way of doing things plus it helps those who only seen the dub learn there sub names so keep up the awesome work
In defense of the dub team, Alphamon didn't debut until like 5 years after Omnimon. So it's understandable they wouldn't have known there was a theme going on.

@@sndark6241 they probably chose Omnimon because they saw the Greek name, Omega, and wanted to keep it Greek. But when Omnimon made its debut, the significance of Omega was not known. Omega is the end, a sense of finality. That's not what Omnimon stands for. Omnimon is the embodiment of everyone's wishes to keep fighting and save the day. Sometimes it’s just romanization (Veemon Vs V-Mon) other times it’s censorship (HolyAngemon Vs MagnaAngemon) but then you get changes that are so minor they seem pointless (As this video itself pointed out: Piyomon Vs Biyomon).

I grew up watching both the Malaysian dub (which follows the original) and the English dub. When I was a kid, I wasn't really mindful of the change in names cause I was just enjoying the show, but as I grew up, it blew my mind realizing that Omnimon's original name was Omegamon. I prefer the sub but I sometimes use their dub names interchangeably. It's like a part of my brain still mixes them up. But I wouldn't mind if people use their dub names. It can be tough to rewire your brain when you grew up with something only to realize they were never what you thought they were. It's like finding out your childhood friend, John's real name was Mark the whole time and you just stand there saying, "No... you're not Mark. You're John." or something like that. This is a great video, dude. Hope to see more like this. Keep up the great work. Also, let's be real. Ultimate sounds WAY more cooler than Mega.
I grew up with the Finnish dub. But the terminology was mixed between the English dub and the Japanese originals. Most Digimon names in Finnish remained as the original Japanese (e.g. Piyomon, AtlurKabuterimon, Lilimon, HolyAngemon, Tailmon), while some others got the English names (e.g. Armadillomon, Gallantmon). The digivolution stage names had the English ones (Rookie, Champion, Ultimate, Mega). The soundtrack remained in Japanese, with the theme songs being dubbed (Butterfly, Target ~Akai Shougeki~, Ashita wa Atashi no Kaze ga Fuku), except they kept Digimon Tamers opening (The Biggest Dreamer) and ending songs (My Tomorrow and Days-Aijou to Nichijou-) in Japanese for some reason, even though the show itself was dubbed. And don't get me started how Digimon was aired and distributed in Finland. Digimon Adventure had two dubbing studios, because the first one (that dubbed episodes 1-26) got too many complaints for its poor quality (Agapio Racing Team). So a new studio (Tuotantotalo Werne) took over to dub the rest of Digimon Adventure. They also dubbed Digimon Zero Two episodes 1-26. But because Tuotantotalo Werne had a contract for only one full season (second half of Adventure, first half of Zero Two), and there was too much demand to air more Digimon, the rest of Zero Two was aired in Japanese with Finnish subtitles. Digimon Tamers is the only series that was dubbed in its entirety by the same studio from start to finish, which I really appreciate. Too bad we didn't get any more Digimon after Tamers. I have heard rumors that Finland planned to air Digimon Frontier, but it was cancelled.
You forgot to mention the fact Pinochimon/Puppetmon, Piemon/Piedmon and Scorpiomon/Anomalocarimon are only digimons to have their own Finnish names; Pinomon, Piamon and Ancrustamon. Anyways, great comment btw! Tai pitäisikö sanoi mahtavaa.
I also use the sub names instead the dub, maybe because I'm not from USA, so I like that you use the sub even if you talk in english, other channels don't do that, also I like you using the sub scenes because there's a lot of times that the dubs changes the scenes and their meanings what bothers me.
I grew up on the dub and I prefer some of the names we got over the sub counterparts like Omnimon and Gatomon (will admit, Omegamon makes more sense lore wise of course). That being said, if someone was to ask me which versions is "correct" it would of course be the sub since that was the original names of the characters. It doesn't matter to me if I hear the sub or the dub names. Both are fine in my book as long as the person is consistent with what they use. That being said, I kinda disagree with you on the ultimate/mega or perfect/ultimate debate. You mention that ultimate generally represents something that is final which is fair but you forget to mention that Perfect means there's nothing better it could be. When something is final, you can still go back and improve on it at a later time if you wish you just usually don't. If something is perfect, and you go to something after it, it can't get more perfect meaning it will be worse than what it was before. I'm not defending the word Mega (kinda a lazy name to be fair) but you can look at it along the lines of "Well, we've made the final before, lets just take that and make it bigger (aka. Jumbo-size it)" so it can be taken as not being worse, but going from Perfect to Not-perfect doesn't have that benefit. To me the best names (for the dub) probably would have been Ultimate -> Perfect but that would have likely just caused even more confusion than there already is XD
Regarding that ultimate and perfect issue, remember that these are STAGES, not just power levels. For example, adult human stage is before elderly, but who is more "perfect"? A human in their prime or an elderly person with a weak body? I'm not saying the Mega is weak, but it is final, which is why ultimate can be used.
I grew up with the English dub and agree about the stage names but I have gotten use to the Japanese names from watching his videos they still make me cringe but I'm happy someone is out there doing these videos on a beloved series that I enjoy.
I grew up with the dub and still love it for the cheesy dad jokes and celebrity impersonations used to voice various characters but once i saw my first episode of the subbed version and heard the amazing soundtrack by koji wada that gives me goosebumps when it kicks in during action packed moments and saw that the show was actually a rather dark shonen anime and not the saturday am kids show i was tricked by fox kids into thinking it was i instantly fell in love with the subbed version. I now prefer it subbed but occasionally i do go back and watch the dub. It really shows in the digimon dub how fox kids was beginning to morph into what became the cringelord dubbing company that was 4kids. Many of the people who dubbed digimon in the us went on to be partly responsible for pokemon jelly donuts and the one piece rap and other 4kids edits. It shows how allowing smidge of censorship and gung ho localization in dubbing can start a avalanche of terrible edits and changes that will be memed to death for ages. The more they get away with it the further they take it until we end up with something like 4kids and fun dad jokes and celebrity voices get out of hand and start ruining shows for people.
Thank you for this. I lost count of how many americans think everyone speaking english should use the dub names. That's one of the points against changed dub names too, not only encloses people on a language bubble, but on a sub-fandom bubble too, considering that Digimon is meant to be worldwide.
If I had to guess, native English speakers are probably more likely than native speakers of any other to stay in a bubble where they only ever hear their language. I would assume the UK would be less closed-off than the US by virtue of being in closer proximity to countries with other national languages. I think that part of the map featured in this vid is somewhat suspect as the UK could just use American dubs for things, but I'm sure they're still less closed-off.
@@albatross1779 There are a lot of English speakers in the US, but there are also a lot of people who speak other languages as their native or second language (about ~60mil). I think that's why there were other languages like Spanish incorporated into the US English dub like Gatomon. It was also the early 2000s, when a lot of anime was being dubbed due to subs not being very popular or not easily accessible over here. Lots of dubbing studios used to change/localize names/words of the shows they dubbed because they thought it would sell better or maybe something in Japanese sounded off or inappropriate to English speakers. You don't see this happen as much anymore though with dubs. Mostly because subs are wildly more popular now, and the general American audience is more comfortable with Japanese words and names. It's still funny though to go back and watch old American dubs of anime like Pokemon's infamous "donuts" lol.
I will agree that old dubs with name changes can be fascinating at times. Ace Attorney is probably the last holdout of that era, assuming Yokai Watch will never make a resurgence.

Especially me who grew up with the Finnish dub. The Finnish dub had the Japanese originals. And when the second half of Zero Two aired in Finland, they aired it in Japanese with Finnish subtitles. So when it comes to Digimon names, I prefer the Japanese originals. Because that's the names my country used. And it seems like when it comes to the Finnish dub, it's a direct translation from the Japanese originals, since the Finnish dub uses the Japanese soundtrack, opening and ending songs. It wouldn't make much sense that the Finnish dub would use the Japanese soundtrack, and then add all the changes made to the English dub. Which means the Finnish dub is uncensored! Most notable scene is the hitch-hiking scene in Digimon Adventure episode 30, where Yamato (Matt) actually hitch-hikes and a lady in a two seated convertible pulls over. This was cut in the English dub, but was left in the Finnish dub. :D
You are critical of the Dubbed version of Ultimate being before Mega, but the EXACT same problem exist in the Subbed with Perfect before Ultimate. If something is Perfect, its the final stage of the product, not needing to be improved on, and yet Ultimate exists after "perfection", so Perfect isn't perfect its still inferior to Ultimate. And Gatomon is a much better name the Tailmon. Most digimon have tails, infact some digimon are almost entirely a tail (like the Seadramon evolutions), so having Tailmon have its name because of it has a tail is very bad when most other digimon also have tails. Gatomon Is a significantly better name as Gato is spanish for cat and the digimon expressly looks like a cat, which a lot of americans know gato=cat due to the proximity to Mexico and mexican immigration into the US. If you were to use the same naming conventions to remove Gato back to tail, then you would have to change a lot of the japanese names of digimon because international speakers would not know or understand the cultural context of japanese specific digimon names, like Dokugamon would have to be changed. Just because only about 20% of the US is fluent in a second language does not mean they dont know words or phrases in another language. Being fluent in another language just means you can have a conversation in a second language, not mastery of the second language. As an american I used to be fluent in Spanish and Japanese, but due to not having enough people to actually talk or use those languages I have forgotten most of it, but I can still pick up some words of phrases that are spoken in those languages.
@@nedrostram2360 Tailmon just sounds super lame, that is also a big reason they probably changed most of the names. They had to dub it for an audience that probably would not have liked something like "Tailmon" which makes absolutely 0 sense, even given the Holy ring. Just because she had a ring on her tail doesn't automatically give the tail some kind of significance. If she used it to attack or it was an integral part to the character it would make more sense, but its not.
Another problem I have with the localized names, is that sometimes they mix up 2 different things......like digieggs and digimentals. In japanese "tamago" means "egg", so there's absolutely no problem with localizing it as "digitama" to "digiegg" (or even "digihuevo" as we got in spanish speaking countries, "huevo" meaning "egg")........the problem came when -for some unknown reason- the english dub decided to rename digimentals ALSO AS "DIGIEGG".
This bothers me so much too and I don’t get why they changed Digimentals to Digieggs, ‘cause it’s obnoxious looking them up and seeing “Digieggs have the power of armor Digivolution” as well as “Digieggs are what Digimon hatch from/reincarnate into”. Personally I do use the dub names because they're what I'm use to (and I personally think some of them sound cooler, Omnimon and Gallantmon for example. Though I do see the appeal of Omegamon as a counterpart to Alphamon). But I don't really care which names other people use. Should just be personal preference
I love Digimon philipino english dub version... Because it never changes the actual original names and music... And also the dialogues are literally dubbed with out changing the what they actually meant letting me connect with the emotional side of each characters... I miss that dub version....
The dub that I watched as a kid was in my native language which keeps the original names but the games however used US version of names so it was kinda confusing. Luckily you can apply undub patch for Cyber Sleuth on pc so the digimon names are exactly how the characters call them.

I first saw Digimon when I moved to Canada so I saw the dub version, since I also speak Spanish some of the names where easy for me to understand...the perfect example being Gatomon, to this day I still call her Gatomon and she is actually my favorite. Nowadays I do watch the sub version but still hold the dub version dear to my heart.
I think Piyomon>Biyomon follows the same logic as Pukamon>Bukamon, miscomunication. In both cases the kana for the "p" and "b" sounds look really similar, specially with certaIn fonts: ピ/ビ (pi/bi), プ/ブ (pu/bu).
I thought about that too but when they evolved in the japanese version, you can see the correct spelling in alphabet letters. In the dub version, they took the trouble to edit that part when they could have just reused the name, except for the katakana which still remained the same.
I watched the American dubs first and so those tend to be the names I default to. However, I've also generally kept myself informed of the original Japanese names and so am never bothered by people choosing them. Entirely personal opinion though, while names like Tailmon might have been intended with an international audience in mind, I don't think they always accomplish that very well. After all those decisions were often made by executive that don't necessarily even speak English, and so their decisions might seem to more so reflect how a loan word is used in Japanese rather than its actual language of origin. Lots of animals have tails, not just cats, and so as a native English speaker the association feels much weaker. Conversely, while a name like Gatomon (or Nekomon) has no immediate association either, once learned it actually provides a bit of linguistic exposure. All that said, my preference for dub names over originals does tend to vary by season. For the most part I think the first season tried to stay true to spirit whenever changes were made, perhaps most notable with human characters whose dubbed names were often shortened forms of the original Japanese ones and so could be regard like nicknames. Whereas in the second season the humans had names entirely unrelated to their originals. The former comes across as a change to help make them easier to pronounce and remember (especially for young children), while the latter just comes across as erasing the foreigness. Overall though, while it can maybe sometimes be a little confusing, I think everyone should just use the names they are most comfortable with, and not let arguments like dub vs sub get in the way of our shared love for the franchise.
I grew up with the Dub, but I have done a lot of research. I've learned about the Japanese version through research. Season 3 is my favorite because of Guilmon and Terriermon. But I also love Patamon for some reason. I love how Digimon can talk, Digivolve and return to the Rookie (Child) stage. Your term changes never bothered me. I have English Digimon cards (Not all the ones I want) and Japanese cards (more than I need and yet I still need a few more). I also am writing Digimon fanfiction with my friend. So my love is odd. You can use whatever terms you like, I know them.
I switched over to using the Japanese names when I grew up, could look up information on wikis, and could watch the original Japanese versions with subtitles. The dub terms and names are fine for kids, and nostalgia's sake, but it's just easier in the long-term to switch to the Japanese terms if you can. It annoys me to no end to watch the subtitled version of the new "Adventure:" series and see them randomly use dub evolutionary terms while the almost the entire rest of the show uses the Japanese terms. It's also weird to see the decision to subtitle Tentomon's use of the Kansai-ben honorific "han" as the standard "san" when it's blatantly, audibly clear that he's saying "han".
Dub was my first. I have a appreciation for the Originals but Dub will always hold a special place in my heart. I agree with a lot of what you said but on the opposite end of it, i would have never watched or stuck with a lot of shows if it wasnt for the dub. I could relate to the characters better and get more into the story because its in my language. I get the slang and subtile nuances. I dont want to read. I wanna watch the show. I dont wanna be Bilingual, i wanna watch cartoons 😂

I watched the first 3 seasons in English as a kid, but as an adult I've re-watched every season except the last one in Japanese throughout my jeorney, so I'm quite comfortable with both. Definately 1000% agree that the environment you're surrounded in will determine it. Some of these responses from my fellow English speakers comes from ignorance.
I speak 5 languages, fluently, I'm Swiss with Jap origins. I'm improving my Japanese, they will be 6 soon. The point is I understand you perfectly dude, I use them all the time the Japanese names, normally I'm used to them more than the Americanized versions like urgh...Davis, urgh... I watched Digimon in Japanese, Spanish, and Italian so yeah, a girl who knows the world. I'm not American so I know a lot of languages including English. I experienced Digimon as the dub back when I played Rumble Arena. I experienced the sub when my sister and I watched the sub of Adventure. It's a quite a different story watching both the original JP dub and compare it to the Eng dub. As for the debate, I would say that sticking to the original JP terms, because it will be for everyone around the world and I don't like the names Bandai use for the West like engrishy names ( Varudorumon instead of Valdurmon), censored names/ names that don't make sense( Reapmon instead of Baalmon, Axeknightmon instead of Darkknightmon, and Splashmon Darkness Mode 2 instead of just plain old Darkness Mode) and stupid terms like digifuse instead of digixros when there is an actual digifuse in the SXW games and Fusion Fighters instead of Xros Heart, which feels like Kouji Wada isn't appreciated in the dub and distorts the meaning of Taiki's meaning to his team.
Things is though, stuff like the Valdurmon being Valduromon is how they would pronounce it in Japan so they’re just giving an exact translation since they pronounce their letters and syllables differently or else they’d be doing mispronunciation instead of the name change like you suggested.

But when you take a look at the name from a spelling perspective as well knowing the origin of the namesake from the digimon whose have English origin only see the name spelled transliterated/romanized, it feels not quite right. For example, digimon such Alraumon and Owlmon are named after words like Alraune and Owl. However the localized names for those two digimon are called Aruraumon and Aurumon. I just want to know the names to be more concise. I guess another example to explain my point would be Orgemon/Ogremon where the former is from theofficial romanized JP name while the later is the localized name.
One thing i hated about the digimon 02 dub in particular is that a few entire episodes were removed from the dub. A lot of dub only fans think that the dark ocean plotline was dropped completly but it had a conclusion. A sloppy one but it did have one. If i remember right, daemon was the dragomon teased at the end of the dark ocean episode after evolving and an entire episode was cut where it was explained and the 02 chosen children defeated him. The episode was cut for being too dark and featuring heavy satanic imagery because it was around the 90s and the satanic panic being a thing. So blame the boomers for not knowing what became of that plotline.
Now in today's world the satanic panic is now cancel culture and you can blame millennials, my generation, for the collapse of society and the Marxists that want to enslave everyone.
If I remembwr correctly there was also a part that got heavily censored if not rempved completely (probably related to the dark ocean since the whole thing was a homage to H.P. Lovecraft's myths). In it the Hangyomon/Divermon were thankful because Hikari helped them or something and then they tell her she shall help them reproduce or something like that.

People try to counter that by bringing up that scene in tamers where renamon says that digimon dont have genders but other media and anime says different. I remember seeing a line in one of the digimon games or manga, i forget which but it said that gender was an optional thing for digimon and when digimon wanted to procreate they picked a gender if they haven't already and grew the necessary parts to make a digiegg. Not sure what those would be. I imagine some kind of optional program that when paired with another version spawns an egg. I dont imagine them having the usual bedsheet samba but who knows. I kind of find it amusimg that you can have an angemon be the mom in a relationship and angewomon be the dad. Pretty progressive if you ask me. Dont even make me mention all of the tiddies and butts flying around the screen in the xros wars anime. It felt like i was watching some harem isekai anime almost lol.

Even if that wasn't the case, I think Digimon is one of the franchizes that changes dubbing terms the most. For example, the original and some dub terms for the kids are "chosen children" but in the English dub they are "digidestined" while in the German dub I think they are "digi knights" (digi ritters).
The Mexican / LATAM Dub was REAL LUCKY that it did not just translate the 4Kids American Dub but we still had some leftovers like the Digimon Movie and names like Gatomon and stuff. The 3rd Season, Tamers Dub was full of mexicanisms that our LATAM brothers have not forgiven us even to this day for adding.
While your point generally stands and I never had an issue with you using the original terms (outside of some move names seeming lamer but that's purely subjective), there are a few things where your point of view skews things. Like the argument you have for The third form being changed doesn't really matter since in both versions they have the same issue, the final form sounds worse than the penultimate form. Perfect means without flaws, so how do you get better than that? The Omnimon thing also isn't that big a deal because Alphamon didn't exist back when Omegamon debuted, it was created later to tie in to Omegamon so the lore wasn't really a factor when the name was chosen and at that point the name was already set for regional marketing so changing it back wouldn't make sense. At that point it would have thrown off the existing audience and I have a first hand experience that proves it would have been. And on the notes of the crests, and this is purely subjective, I totally understand the change and I think the new names actually works better with the characters. Purity has...implications, especially when it comes to young girls so I can wanting to avoid it and a sincere belief in what Mimi's doing or says works just as well if not better in the narrative so that works. Purity also isn't really something you can intrinsically have, it's something that others project onto you based off of a lot of varying outside parameters. And the shift meant they needed a new things for Joe and honestly reliability works better than sincerity for how his plots go, so it worked out. But again, that's subjective and I'll admit to personal bias. So yeah, no problem with you using the original terms and it makes sense for general outreach, I'm just pointing out that some of your justification is a bit wonky. Everytime you search for a Digimon on Wikimon it directs you to page for the Digimon you searched for even if you use a dub name. The site primarily uses the original names of the Digimon, but they have thought of those who search with dub names.
In my country when digimon was first aired it was dubbed in English, however, it's not the American dub. It retained the Japanese names, and even during digivolutions they say "changes", which is a literal translation of "shinka", instead of "digivolves to". But since it's locally dubbed, the accent is a little awkward. But I still love it over the American dub.
My first experience with Digimon was through Arabic dubbing, and it amazed me as a child. The Arabic dub was way severe worse in terms of censorship, they changed the names completely to Arabic-based ones including the Digimons and they have cut-out all the sexual and religious and some violent scenes way more than the English dub. On the positive side though, the quality of the acting was superior to most European version in my opinion and also they kept the original opening but with Arabic lyrics which is still popular to this day among my generation (90s kids). Personally I loved the anime nevertheless and I became a huge fan, despite the animation limitations it had in comparaison to other works at the time and despite the censorship because the core message it self of it spoke directly the child me at that time and it moved me emotionally and made me realise a lot of the world's realities and atrocities' at that age through the protagonists trials and journey and it also taught me a lot about friendship, companionship, loyalty and values. Later on I managed to make my younger siblings fans of the first three seasons of this show. I'm glad I lived through an era where this show was still ambitious in terms of the message and the quality it tried to achieve.
I'm gonna have to go with the dub on this one. Gattomon sounds better than Tailmon. Like, why is she called Tailmon in the first place? Because she has a tail? Well, Gatto at least means "cat" so it makes a bit more sense to me. Or LordKnightmon becoming Crusadermon. That sounds waaaay cooler, and fits with the Royal Knights theme a bit more. Calling him LordKnightmon just sounds like he's supposed to be a souped up Knightmon, which we all know he isn't. I also like how they actually spell out Veemon in the dub instead of being Vmon. It just looks better. Not to mention names like Kentaurosmon, which sounds far more intimidating than Sleipmon, and Beelzemon, which flows better than Beelzbumon (that weird "bu" in the middle throws the flow off), or Puppetmon instead of Pinnochimon (I get what they were going for, but what a strange reference) I'll admit, some aren't winners (Lilithmon to Laylamon) but it's also worth noting that these usually only happen in the shows, rather than the videogames. Lilithmon is still Lilithmon in Cyber Sleuth, for example.
I saw the dubs first and something never felt right. Never was that into digimon but I recently watched the original adventure and I agree that the name changes are pointless. If you look at Naruto's dub for example, non of the character names are changed. Techniques are renamed to be less literal than in Japanese and less of a mouthful, "Storm Release: Encouraging Crushing Chain Tormenting Principle" becomes "gale style:laser circus". Also I think the reason the English games/anime dub use rookie instead of child is to make the Digimon seem older, the Digimon in the anime also mainly had adult voices so I think they intentionally wanted them aged up. I'm guessing having purely children fighting alongside and against other children was too much for the Executives.
Even when I was a kid and didn't know Spanish, I already knew Gato meant cat somehow just simply how it sounds closer to the word. Gatomon just sounds cuter and relates to her being a cat. Tailmon is a bit obvious and it's like sure it can relate to cats but a lot of animals also have tails. Kids are a lot smarter than given credit and I don't see the problem with learning another language, as you said. Plus if the original uses English and Latin translations for names, that kinda defeats the purpose of learning new languages. By changing the Digimon names in the English dub, kids actually got to understand different languages. It's possible the American dub changed names to make certain names not be so obvious to English speaking viewers. I mean they kept names like Renamon which is fox in French "Renard". If she was called 'Foxmon' in the original, the English dub would probably change it to make it sound better and be less obvious. The name for Omnimon from Omegamon probably was change to get rid of its tie in religion regarding the end of the world. Things relating to religion was a big no in America and parents might complain thus the show can be cancelled. As for the changes to the levels, since Digimon are seen as monsters/creatures not humans, maybe they thought some kids would find it either more confusing or be uncool. They do things like this to make sure it sells well otherwise it can backfire on them. It's stupid and sometimes makes no sense but it helps get people introduced to it.
Digimon has so many religious references. There are tons of angel and demon Digimon, the Seven Demon Lords, etc. Religious people really need to stop being offended by everything, although I'm sure some of it is also Bandai just being stupid and assuming people will be offended when in reality they won't be.
I proper loved Digimon when I was a child! 😃 It was dubbed in English, then I lost interest! :( Until over 20 years later, after meeting one of my many online Dutch friends on Instagram, he tagged me in his Digimon posts, reminding me of my childhood and that’s what got me back into the series and appreciate it even more! 😃 When I was a kid, I watched all the episodes from season 1, most of them from season 2 and only some of season 3! Then I was obviously that they had seasons 4 and onwards! Then I proper enjoyed my retrospectieve watching the boxset from seasons 1 to 4 I bought.
Something folks forget is this is a cartoon for kids (Kodomo anime means that) since anime is used by all the cartoon in all the world. So, it is pretty cool to have a multilanguage idea so kids of all the world can understand. I speak perfectly spanish and italian so I know Gato or Gatto (Italian) means cat, but the name is meh to me, Tailmon is better i mean lol is obviously a cat, so not a necessary name.
Totally agree with your points. I grew up with dub but prefers sub later on as I get older. My personal opinion is when anything is translated to other languages, they should maintain the original meaning by directly translate it so that people could learn the differences of the culture and such...
US fans definitely missed out on a ton of greatness due to the english dub we got growing up. We never experienced the amazing original soundtrack and theme-song, Butter-fly; we missed out on the significant storytelling via the digimon names; and we even got out of place story beats and strange dialogue because the translations were wacky and thought the story needed to be dumbed down. I'm still grateful to have been able to have digimon as part of my childhood, but after learning of how much we missed out on makes me sad. I'm glad the dubs nowadays have gotten way better
I hate when localization team trying to put their own "creative" twist when localizing shows or games. It completely ruin the original meaning and intention of the creator. Happened a lot, especially in JRPG.
I grew up with the English American dub. Though nowadays I watch both dubbed and subbed, then I just use the names from both that I'm most comfortable with, which results in a mix of both. Most of time when commenting I use both names like this: English Dub/Japanese Dub with English subtitles. If the difference between the two names is just like: Wizardmon and Wizarmon, than I'm just going to use Wizardmon.
I totally agree with you! Once I saw the original names, I discarded the American names. They made no scene. When Digimon X came out I found out their true names which I saw need no changes. The dub I saw fortunately had the original theme songs and not the Digirap... I am sorry for all of those who like the digi rap, but it sucks in comparison to the original songs. The American names takes away all the hidden meanings this series bring to the table. So I´ll stick to the Original Japanese names!
Good for you, but it still makes it difficult for people who grew up with the dub to understand who or what you are referring to. Communication between one human being to another is very important since the dawn of time, and if you try to discard that based on either pride, snide or just disdain for localisation, then you fail at communicating. I speculate that a large majority of people have grown up with the dub and would prefer to communicate about Digimon via their dub incarnations. It’s also a sign of respect. You respect the wishes of the other person, even if at heart you don’t agree with it. That’s what this community needs. Respectful communication

Not only did they approve it, they constantly use the terms and names across series and video games. So really it just looks like a situation where a bunch of weeabos are trying to scoff at those people who grew accustomed to dub words.
I agree with you completely, even though from the map shown my country was represented as one to show the subbed versions in majority of cases, it's actually not like that situ is more of a 50/50 between sub and dub
I prefer Gatomon. The name makes more sense to me. I grow up with the german version (because I'm from Germany) and we also call it Gatomon. I learned early that Gato means cat in Spain, because my mother speaks spain. On the other side, I prefer the name Omegamon instead of Omnimon. Whats also kind of weird is that in Digimon Data Squad we in Germany said Sleipmon but in Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and Hackers Memory we said Centarumon.
The weirdest thing about dubed version is how childish it is. For example the first time Angemon shows up the dialogue is all about him sacrificing himself while dub is something like "Cool hair" and "Don't worry I'll be back".
Hm, fair and valid points and opinions. Also, in my case, Digimon was amongst the Shows that introduced me to Anime, as well as eventually becoming the one that introduced me the differences between Sub and Dub, which eventually lead me into becoming a Sub Fan.
I grew up with the US English dub. Something seemed off about it. I prefer the Japanese names over the US English ones. If I had to rewatch any season/series of Digimon, I prefer the subbed version. Only if they released the subbed version as a box set here in the US. The dub annoys me.
I first watched Digimon in Dutch dubbing (i'm romanian). The evolution stages were: Rookie, Champion, Ultra, Mega. There were 2 others before rookie..but I never memoriesed them.

As a French Canadian, I can speak from experience that dubbing sucks in general. The worst part is that English speakers in North America will often criticize French or Spanish dubs and western TV shows and movies for being shitty (which they are), but then turn around and praise English dubs of Japanese Anime and movies and will make fun of people who watch them subbed, what a bunch of hypocrites! While I watched the first 3 seasons of Digimon in English, I started watching them in subs for season 4 and onwards as well as rewatching the original 3 in subs as well. I find it really shitty that we still haven't gotten the uncut DVDs with Japanese VA of all the seasons! WTF is Shout! Factory waiting for?

To me, the only real argument for sub over dub is that the Japanese music is absolutely incredible. Aside from that, I find the dub to generally be more entertaining and that's basically all I care about.
The termonology choices are the least of the issues in the American dub of Digimon Adventure, 02, Fusion. I take much bigger issue with the character assassination usually for the sake of jokes, ruining any thoughtful atmospheric scene with constant talking and narration, and removing character development and depth.

Ah yes, because going from Ultimate to Mega makes so much less sense than going from PERFECT to Ultimate. Neither of those naming conventions for the last 2 stages of Digivolution make any sense so complaining about the English vs the Japanese term (beyond the Japanese suggesting emotional growth as well) is pretty much a moot point. If something is Perfect it's the best it can be, there is literally no improving on perfection so to go from Perfect to Ultimate actually even less sense than the English if anything. As for everything else I can appreciate both the sub and dub versions for different reasons. I know a lot of stuff gets lost in translation, but if the stuff that is lost wouldn't make sense to a particular audience then what's the point in it being there? If people end up watching the sub later and are interested to learn about that stuff they will go and do so it's entirely their prerogative.
I watch it dub. Spanish Latin Dub. In this dub the sountrack was the japanese version, but the names and terminology a mix betwen english and japanese, and it was changed betwen seasons. Examples: we used Qinglongmon and Azulongmon (02 or Tamers), the evolution terms like you said: Child, Adult, Perfect, Ultimate were use in Adventure but a little changed: Crecimiento (Growth), Adulto (Adult), Perfeccionado (Perfect in participle verb) and Mega. In later season this was changed into english versions: Novato (Rookie), Campeón (Champion), Ultra (Ultimate), Mega. The character names were also changed: Taichi = Tai. Yamato = Matt. Daisuke = Davis. Ruki = Rika. My english is not perfect, so i try. Digimon was my childhood. I love the japanese soundtrack, and the latin american dub songs are amazing!.

I agree with you 100% Italian dub had the original music and also didn't censor much but the name were changed. As an adult i prefer all Japanese term and names it also help thati speak Japanese fluently. When i play the Digimon TGC and use the original names people look at me funny sometime but whatever :P
I saw Digimon in Hindi version for the very first time in 2003 and it used all orignal japanese names and music of Children and Digimon. I also saw English and Orignal Japanese version. I consider Japanese version with English subtitles best to watch because Japanese version has best sound, dialogues and music
In Brazil the dubbed version uses most of the Japanese names. But there is a mix for some Digimon like Miotysmon (Vamdemon) and the Crests mentioned in the video.
Im lucky that the Filipino-English dub of Digimon followed the original names, same story, and kept some of the scenes that were removed in the US version. After a decade I got to watch the US dub of Digimon Adventure and was surprised by the corny jokes, bad confusing dubs, and cut scenes.
I'm using both. In my country we have only first Adventure officially dubbed. But we have two versions. One based on english version and one based on japanese version. But version with japanese names is only with one voice actor and orginal voices in back. Yes, I'm know this can be weird but it work!
So i played an old digimon game on the ps2 a long time a go and it got me really excited but me and my older brother decided to have a team. He had one side and i had the other. Even though he wouldn't let me use a member from hid team i still kept playing with mine. Months later i learned about the anime when i saw the VHS in my uncles truck but when i put it in my VHS player i learned it was the behind the scenes footage of star wars. I think a month later the first 2 parts of digimon adventure was put on netflix. I was so excited but didn't realize the second part so after i finished season 1 i cried... a lot but learned about season 2 and stopped crying. A year later season three was on netflix... i watched it all in a month. Years later i was in 7th grade so middle school. Middle school was kicking my butt and when i started to rewatch digimon i found out digimon was going to be removed. (If you must be wondering how i felt imagine you wake up and are hungry. You go to the kitchen to get some your favorite cereal when you find out your brother is eating the last of it. You want to beat him up but your parents are home so you leave him be and forget about it.) Now that i use hulu i got the chance to watch part one but stopped in the middle of part two because i found out not all of the episodes are on it.
Yeah, I first experienced the dub growing from seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4. Then, when I went to five and six, I appreciated the sub more. When it comes to the sub for me, I understand the original dialogue, the soundtrack, and the voice acting is a lot better, in my personal opinion
I grew up with Digimon dubbed in my country language, luckily enough italian was censored like the US ver but at least the dub quality was good. Still, saw many of those same seasons with jp dub as those episodes were uncensored+better quality years later. So I'm fine with the jp terminology used in every video, as I'm quite familiar with them by now.
I think the Digivolution levels should have been: Baby In-Training Rookie Champion Master Grandmaster Simple, no confusion, and it fits the concept of 'Mastery' that Rookie and Champion set up.

I'm British and I grew up watching old Godzilla films late night on Channel 4, often subbed, so reading subtitles has become second nature to me, meaning it doesn't matter what language it's in, if it has English subtitles, I'm fine! Plus I learn a new language (sort of) along the way! As such, I have a bit of Japanese, but did French GCSEs for five years, so I speak English UK with a West Yorkshire dialect, extremely rusty at French (I left school in 2000!), a spot of Spanish, I know how to pronounce words from a couple of other European languages (French, German, Spanish, Italian) as well as Japanese, but that's about where my linguistic skills run dry, I'm afraid! Who says Brits don't embrace other cultures? Digimon was a VERY rare beast for me: It was something I watched from the FIRST episode! I can only think of one or two others where that happened outside of mine and my mate's Animé and DVD libraries! I've kept with Digimon as I actually prefer it to Pokémon, the obvious comparisson, I know! Plus, I really hate Pokémon's current English dub by DuArt! I can only think of minor bugbears with Digimon's dub choices, though, while I have watched Tamers so, I kind of want to watch the rest in Japanese as well, mostly jus to see it, while with Pokémon it's purely so I don't have to put up with that Sovereigns awful Dub! As a kid who didn’t grow up in America, the names of the Digimon weren’t changed, so we got the original names, that are meant to target the whole world and not just an specific area.
Now, as a language professional, when we translate or adapt something to another language, we most likely lose the original idea behind the planned words.

Fairymon is a good example. The name is already english, why the hell change it to Kazemon? Kaze means wind in Japanese I think.

It annoys me that in the US we had things like Gatomon > Tailmon, Myotismon > Vamdemon or MaloMyotis vs Belial Vamde, they turned Bombmon into an Orange and he's Bombernanimon in the games still, in the show hes Citrusmon or Cherrybomon and there's 0 consistency. There was Stingmon instead of Waspmon for some reason. We got Ciel sistermon but the Black one still appears in earlier games. Ebidramon was supposed to be Shrimpmon, for the longest time I thought he was a Dramon digimon because of it. Ebidra is just the word for shrimp in Asian nations. We didn't get official local names until Digimon World DS and 2010 Era digimon series. It totally confused me when all the biblical names only, or things that could be biblical in nature, were changed to totally unrelated BS that didn't convey the backstory or the power of the digimon who held that title.
I don't care if you use Japanese names or not I just like watching the videos you make plus everyone has their own way of doing things plus it helps those who only seen the dub learn there sub names so keep up the awesome work
I personally prefer to stick to the Japanese names for consistancy. Case example: Omegamon's relation to Alphamon.
In defense of the dub team, Alphamon didn't debut until like 5 years after Omnimon. So it's understandable they wouldn't have known there was a theme going on.

@@sndark6241 they probably chose Omnimon because they saw the Greek name, Omega, and wanted to keep it Greek. But when Omnimon made its debut, the significance of Omega was not known. Omega is the end, a sense of finality. That's not what Omnimon stands for. Omnimon is the embodiment of everyone's wishes to keep fighting and save the day. Hence, Omni ("all")

Sometimes it’s just romanization (Veemon Vs V-Mon) other times it’s censorship (HolyAngemon Vs MagnaAngemon) but then you get changes that are so minor they seem pointless (As this video itself pointed out: Piyomon Vs Biyomon).

I grew up watching both the Malaysian dub (which follows the original) and the English dub.
When I was a kid, I wasn't really mindful of the change in names cause I was just enjoying the show, but as I grew up, it blew my mind realizing that Omnimon's original name was Omegamon.
I prefer the sub but I sometimes use their dub names interchangeably. It's like a part of my brain still mixes them up.
But I wouldn't mind if people use their dub names. It can be tough to rewire your brain when you grew up with something only to realize they were never what you thought they were.
It's like finding out your childhood friend, John's real name was Mark the whole time and you just stand there saying, "No... you're not Mark. You're John." or something like that.

I grew up with the Finnish dub. But the terminology was mixed between the English dub and the Japanese originals. Most Digimon names in Finnish remained as the original Japanese (e.g. Piyomon, AtlurKabuterimon, Lilimon, HolyAngemon, Tailmon), while some others got the English names (e.g. Armadillomon, Gallantmon). The digivolution stage names had the English ones (Rookie, Champion, Ultimate, Mega).
The soundtrack remained in Japanese, with the theme songs being dubbed (Butterfly, Target ~Akai Shougeki~, Ashita wa Atashi no Kaze ga Fuku), except they kept Digimon Tamers opening (The Biggest Dreamer) and ending songs (My Tomorrow and Days-Aijou to Nichijou-) in Japanese for some reason, even though the show itself was dubbed.
And don't get me started how Digimon was aired and distributed in Finland. Digimon Adventure had two dubbing studios, because the first one (that dubbed episodes 1-26) got too many complaints for its poor quality (Agapio Racing Team). So a new studio (Tuotantotalo Werne) took over to dub the rest of Digimon Adventure. They also dubbed Digimon Zero Two episodes 1-26. But because Tuotantotalo Werne had a contract for only one full season (second half of Adventure, first half of Zero Two), and there was too much demand to air more Digimon, the rest of Zero Two was aired in Japanese with Finnish subtitles. Digimon Tamers is the only series that was dubbed in its entirety by the same studio from start to finish, which I really appreciate. Too bad we didn't get any more Digimon after Tamers. I have heard rumors that Finland planned to air Digimon Frontier, but it was cancelled.

I also use the sub names instead the dub, maybe because I'm not from USA, so I like that you use the sub even if you talk in english, other channels don't do that, also I like you using the sub scenes because there's a lot of times that the dubs changes the scenes and their meanings what bothers me.
I grew up on the dub and I prefer some of the names we got over the sub counterparts like Omnimon and Gatomon (will admit, Omegamon makes more sense lore wise of course). That being said, if someone was to ask me which versions is "correct" it would of course be the sub since that was the original names of the characters. It doesn't matter to me if I hear the sub or the dub names. Both are fine in my book as long as the person is consistent with what they use.
That being said, I kinda disagree with you on the ultimate/mega or perfect/ultimate debate. You mention that ultimate generally represents something that is final which is fair but you forget to mention that Perfect means there's nothing better it could be. When something is final, you can still go back and improve on it at a later time if you wish you just usually don't. If something is perfect, and you go to something after it, it can't get more perfect meaning it will be worse than what it was before. I'm not defending the word Mega (kinda a lazy name to be fair) but you can look at it along the lines of "Well, we've made the final before, lets just take that and make it bigger (aka. Jumbo-size it)" so it can be taken as not being worse, but going from Perfect to Not-perfect doesn't have that benefit. To me the best names (for the dub) probably would have been Ultimate -> Perfect but that would have likely just caused even more confusion than there already is XD
Regarding that ultimate and perfect issue, remember that these are STAGES, not just power levels. For example, adult human stage is before elderly, but who is more "perfect"? A human in their prime or an elderly person with a weak body? I'm not saying the Mega is weak, but it is final, which is why ultimate can be used.
I grew up with the English dub and agree about the stage names but I have gotten use to the Japanese names from watching his videos they still make me cringe but I'm happy someone is out there doing these videos on a beloved series that I enjoy.
Honestly with the dub having Ultimate being mega, Omegamon would have been better imo as that was the first to go beyond mega, omega
I grew up with the dub and still love it for the cheesy dad jokes and celebrity impersonations used to voice various characters but once i saw my first episode of the subbed version and heard the amazing soundtrack by koji wada that gives me goosebumps when it kicks in during action packed moments and saw that the show was actually a rather dark shonen anime and not the saturday am kids show i was tricked by fox kids into thinking it was i instantly fell in love with the subbed version. I now prefer it subbed but occasionally i do go back and watch the dub. It really shows in the digimon dub how fox kids was beginning to morph into what became the cringelord dubbing company that was 4kids. Many of the people who dubbed digimon in the us went on to be partly responsible for pokemon jelly donuts and the one piece rap and other 4kids edits. It shows how allowing smidge of censorship and gung ho localization in dubbing can start a avalanche of terrible edits and changes that will be memed to death for ages. The more they get away with it the further they take it until we end up with something like 4kids and fun dad jokes and celebrity voices get out of hand and start ruining shows for people.
Those are exactly my thoughts, good to see people can appreciate more the original versions in this modern era.
Thank you for this. I lost count of how many americans think everyone speaking english should use the dub names. That's one of the points against changed dub names too, not only encloses people on a language bubble, but on a sub-fandom bubble too, considering that Digimon is meant to be worldwide.
If I had to guess, native English speakers are probably more likely than native speakers of any other to stay in a bubble where they only ever hear their language. I would assume the UK would be less closed-off than the US by virtue of being in closer proximity to countries with other national languages. I think that part of the map featured in this vid is somewhat suspect as the UK could just use American dubs for things, but I'm sure they're still less closed-off.
@@albatross1779 There are a lot of English speakers in the US, but there are also a lot of people who speak other languages as their native or second language (about ~60mil). I think that's why there were other languages like Spanish incorporated into the US English dub like Gatomon. It was also the early 2000s, when a lot of anime was being dubbed due to subs not being very popular or not easily accessible over here. Lots of dubbing studios used to change/localize names/words of the shows they dubbed because they thought it would sell better or maybe something in Japanese sounded off or inappropriate to English speakers. You don't see this happen as much anymore though with dubs. Mostly because subs are wildly more popular now, and the general American audience is more comfortable with Japanese words and names. It's still funny though to go back and watch old American dubs of anime like Pokemon's infamous "donuts" lol.
I will agree that old dubs with name changes can be fascinating at times. Ace Attorney is probably the last holdout of that era, assuming Yokai Watch will never make a resurgence.

Especially me who grew up with the Finnish dub. The Finnish dub had the Japanese originals. And when the second half of Zero Two aired in Finland, they aired it in Japanese with Finnish subtitles. So when it comes to Digimon names, I prefer the Japanese originals. Because that's the names my country used.
And it seems like when it comes to the Finnish dub, it's a direct translation from the Japanese originals, since the Finnish dub uses the Japanese soundtrack, opening and ending songs. It wouldn't make much sense that the Finnish dub would use the Japanese soundtrack, and then add all the changes made to the English dub. Which means the Finnish dub is uncensored! Most notable scene is the hitch-hiking scene in Digimon Adventure episode 30, where Yamato (Matt) actually hitch-hikes and a lady in a two seated convertible pulls over. This was cut in the English dub, but was left in the Finnish dub. :D
You are critical of the Dubbed version of Ultimate being before Mega, but the EXACT same problem exist in the Subbed with Perfect before Ultimate. If something is Perfect, its the final stage of the product, not needing to be improved on, and yet Ultimate exists after "perfection", so Perfect isn't perfect its still inferior to Ultimate.
And Gatomon is a much better name the Tailmon. Most digimon have tails, infact some digimon are almost entirely a tail (like the Seadramon evolutions), so having Tailmon have its name because of it has a tail is very bad when most other digimon also have tails. Gatomon Is a significantly better name as Gato is spanish for cat and the digimon expressly looks like a cat, which a lot of americans know gato=cat due to the proximity to Mexico and mexican immigration into the US. If you were to use the same naming conventions to remove Gato back to tail, then you would have to change a lot of the japanese names of digimon because international speakers would not know or understand the cultural context of japanese specific digimon names, like Dokugamon would have to be changed.
Just because only about 20% of the US is fluent in a second language does not mean they dont know words or phrases in another language. Being fluent in another language just means you can have a conversation in a second language, not mastery of the second language. As an american I used to be fluent in Spanish and Japanese, but due to not having enough people to actually talk or use those languages I have forgotten most of it, but I can still pick up some words of phrases that are spoken in those languages.
@@nedrostram2360 Tailmon just sounds super lame, that is also a big reason they probably changed most of the names. They had to dub it for an audience that probably would not have liked something like "Tailmon" which makes absolutely 0 sense, even given the Holy ring. Just because she had a ring on her tail doesn't automatically give the tail some kind of significance. If she used it to attack or it was an integral part to the character it would make more sense, but its not.
Another problem I have with the localized names, is that sometimes they mix up 2 different things......like digieggs and digimentals.
In japanese "tamago" means "egg", so there's absolutely no problem with localizing it as "digitama" to "digiegg" (or even "digihuevo" as we got in spanish speaking countries, "huevo" meaning "egg")........the problem came when -for some unknown reason- the english dub decided to rename digimentals ALSO AS "DIGIEGG".
This bothers me so much too and I don’t get why they changed Digimentals to Digieggs, ‘cause it’s obnoxious looking them up and seeing “Digieggs have the power of armor Digivolution” as well as “Digieggs are what Digimon hatch from/reincarnate into”. If you never knew the original meaning, you’d be so confused! 😭

Personally I do use the dub names because they're what I'm use to (and I personally think some of them sound cooler, Omnimon and Gallantmon for example. Though I do see the appeal of Omegamon as a counterpart to Alphamon). But I don't really care which names other people use. Should just be personal preference

I love Digimon philipino english dub version... Because it never changes the actual original names and music... And also the dialogues are literally dubbed with out changing the what they actually meant letting me connect with the emotional side of each characters... I miss that dub version....
The dub that I watched as a kid was in my native language which keeps the original names but the games however used US version of names so it was kinda confusing.
Luckily you can apply undub patch for Cyber Sleuth on pc so the digimon names are exactly how the characters call them.

I first saw Digimon when I moved to Canada so I saw the dub version, since I also speak Spanish some of the names where easy for me to understand...the perfect example being Gatomon, to this day I still call her Gatomon and she is actually my favorite. Nowadays I do watch the sub version but still hold the dub version dear to my heart.

I think Piyomon>Biyomon follows the same logic as Pukamon>Bukamon, miscomunication. In both cases the kana for the "p" and "b" sounds look really similar, specially with certaIn fonts: ピ/ビ (pi/bi), プ/ブ (pu/bu).
I thought about that too but when they evolved in the japanese version, you can see the correct spelling in alphabet letters.
In the dub version, they took the trouble to edit that part when they could have just reused the name, except for the katakana which still remained the same.
Now that I read it, maybe it's due to their names resembling pee and puke when pronounced.

I watched the American dubs first and so those tend to be the names I default to. However, I've also generally kept myself informed of the original Japanese names and so am never bothered by people choosing them.
Entirely personal opinion though, while names like Tailmon might have been intended with an international audience in mind, I don't think they always accomplish that very well. After all those decisions were often made by executive that don't necessarily even speak English, and so their decisions might seem to more so reflect how a loan word is used in Japanese rather than its actual language of origin. Lots of animals have tails, not just cats, and so as a native English speaker the association feels much weaker. Conversely, while a name like Gatomon (or Nekomon) has no immediate association either, once learned it actually provides a bit of linguistic exposure.
All that said, my preference for dub names over originals does tend to vary by season. For the most part I think the first season tried to stay true to spirit whenever changes were made, perhaps most notable with human characters whose dubbed names were often shortened forms of the original Japanese ones and so could be regard like nicknames. Whereas in the second season the humans had names entirely unrelated to their originals. The former comes across as a change to help make them easier to pronounce and remember (especially for young children), while the latter just comes across as erasing the foreigness.
Overall though, while it can maybe sometimes be a little confusing, I think everyone should just use the names they are most comfortable with, and not let arguments like dub vs sub get in the way of our shared love for the franchise.

I grew up with the Dub, but I have done a lot of research. I've learned about the Japanese version through research. Season 3 is my favorite because of Guilmon and Terriermon. But I also love Patamon for some reason. I love how Digimon can talk, Digivolve and return to the Rookie (Child) stage. Your term changes never bothered me. I have English Digimon cards (Not all the ones I want) and Japanese cards (more than I need and yet I still need a few more). I also am writing Digimon fanfiction with my friend. So my love is odd. You can use whatever terms you like, I know them.
I switched over to using the Japanese names when I grew up, could look up information on wikis, and could watch the original Japanese versions with subtitles. The dub terms and names are fine for kids, and nostalgia's sake, but it's just easier in the long-term to switch to the Japanese terms if you can.
It annoys me to no end to watch the subtitled version of the new "Adventure:" series and see them randomly use dub evolutionary terms while the almost the entire rest of the show uses the Japanese terms. It's also weird to see the decision to subtitle Tentomon's use of the Kansai-ben honorific "han" as the standard "san" when it's blatantly, audibly clear that he's saying "han".
Dub was my first. I have a appreciation for the Originals but Dub will always hold a special place in my heart. I agree with a lot of what you said but on the opposite end of it, i would have never watched or stuck with a lot of shows if it wasnt for the dub. I could relate to the characters better and get more into the story because its in my language. I get the slang and subtile nuances. I dont want to read. I wanna watch the show. I dont wanna be Bilingual, i wanna watch cartoons 😂

I watched the first 3 seasons in English as a kid, but as an adult I've re-watched every season except the last one in Japanese throughout my jeorney, so I'm quite comfortable with both. Definately 1000% agree that the environment you're surrounded in will determine it. Some of these responses from my fellow English speakers comes from ignorance.

I experienced Digimon as the dub back when I played Rumble Arena. I experienced the sub when my sister and I watched the sub of Adventure. It's a quite a different story watching both the original JP dub and compare it to the Eng dub.
As for the debate, I would say that sticking to the original JP terms, because it will be for everyone around the world and I don't like the names Bandai use for the West like engrishy names ( Varudorumon instead of Valdurmon), censored names/ names that don't make sense( Reapmon instead of Baalmon, Axeknightmon instead of Darkknightmon, and Splashmon Darkness Mode 2 instead of just plain old Darkness Mode) and stupid terms like digifuse instead of digixros when there is an actual digifuse in the SXW games and Fusion Fighters instead of Xros Heart, which feels like Kouji Wada isn't appreciated in the dub and distorts the meaning of Taiki's meaning to his team.
Things is though, stuff like the Valdurmon being Valduromon is how they would pronounce it in Japan so they’re just giving an exact translation since they pronounce their letters and syllables differently or else they’d be doing mispronunciation instead of the name change like you suggested.

But when you take a look at the name from a spelling perspective as well knowing the origin of the namesake from the digimon whose have English origin only see the name spelled transliterated/romanized, it feels not quite right. For example, digimon such Alraumon and Owlmon are named after words like Alraune and Owl. However the localized names for those two digimon are called Aruraumon and Aurumon. I just want to know the names to be more concise. I guess another example to explain my point would be Orgemon/Ogremon where the former is from theofficial romanized JP name while the later is the localized name.
One thing i hated about the digimon 02 dub in particular is that a few entire episodes were removed from the dub. A lot of dub only fans think that the dark ocean plotline was dropped completly but it had a conclusion. A sloppy one but it did have one. If i remember right, daemon was the dragomon teased at the end of the dark ocean episode after evolving and an entire episode was cut where it was explained and the 02 chosen children defeated him. The episode was cut for being too dark and featuring heavy satanic imagery because it was around the 90s and the satanic panic being a thing. So blame the boomers for not knowing what became of that plotline.
Now in today's world the satanic panic is now cancel culture and you can blame millennials, my generation, for the collapse of society and the Marxists that want to enslave everyone.
If I remembwr correctly there was also a part that got heavily censored if not rempved completely (probably related to the dark ocean since the whole thing was a homage to H.P. Lovecraft's myths). In it the Hangyomon/Divermon were thankful because Hikari helped them or something and then they tell her she shall help them reproduce or something like that.

People try to counter that by bringing up that scene in tamers where renamon says that digimon dont have genders but other media and anime says different. I remember seeing a line in one of the digimon games or manga, i forget which but it said that gender was an optional thing for digimon and when digimon wanted to procreate they picked a gender if they haven't already and grew the necessary parts to make a digiegg. Not sure what those would be. I imagine some kind of optional program that when paired with another version spawns an egg. I dont imagine them having the usual bedsheet samba but who knows. I kind of find it amusimg that you can have an angemon be the mom in a relationship and angewomon be the dad. Pretty progressive if you ask me.

Even if that wasn't the case, I think Digimon is one of the franchizes that changes dubbing terms the most.
For example, the original and some dub terms for the kids are "chosen children" but in the English dub they are "digidestined" while in the German dub I think they are "digi knights" (digi ritters).
The Mexican / LATAM Dub was REAL LUCKY that it did not just translate the 4Kids American Dub but we still had some leftovers like the Digimon Movie and names like Gatomon and stuff.
The 3rd Season, Tamers Dub was full of mexicanisms that our LATAM brothers have not forgiven us even to this day for adding.
While your point generally stands and I never had an issue with you using the original terms (outside of some move names seeming lamer but that's purely subjective), there are a few things where your point of view skews things. Like the argument you have for The third form being changed doesn't really matter since in both versions they have the same issue, the final form sounds worse than the penultimate form. Perfect means without flaws, so how do you get better than that? The Omnimon thing also isn't that big a deal because Alphamon didn't exist back when Omegamon debuted, it was created later to tie in to Omegamon so the lore wasn't really a factor when the name was chosen and at that point the name was already set for regional marketing so changing it back wouldn't make sense. At that point it would have thrown off the existing audience and I have a first hand experience that proves it would have been.
And on the notes of the crests, and this is purely subjective, I totally understand the change and I think the new names actually works better with the characters. Purity has...implications, especially when it comes to young girls so I can wanting to avoid it and a sincere belief in what Mimi's doing or says works just as well if not better in the narrative so that works. Purity also isn't really something you can intrinsically have, it's something that others project onto you based off of a lot of varying outside parameters. And the shift meant they needed a new things for Joe and honestly reliability works better than sincerity for how his plots go, so it worked out. But again, that's subjective and I'll admit to personal bias.
So yeah, no problem with you using the original terms and it makes sense for general outreach, I'm just pointing out that some of your justification is a bit wonky. Do you man and keep up the good work.

Everytime you search for a Digimon on Wikimon it directs you to page for the Digimon you searched for even if you use a dub name. The site primarily uses the original names of the Digimon, but they have thought of those who search with dub names.
In my country when digimon was first aired it was dubbed in English, however, it's not the American dub. It retained the Japanese names, and even during digivolutions they say "changes", which is a literal translation of "shinka", instead of "digivolves to".
But since it's locally dubbed, the accent is a little awkward. But I still love it over the American dub.

My first experience with Digimon was through Arabic dubbing, and it amazed me as a child. The Arabic dub was way severe worse in terms of censorship, they changed the names completely to Arabic-based ones including the Digimons and they have cut-out all the sexual and religious and some violent scenes way more than the English dub. On the positive side though, the quality of the acting was superior to most European version in my opinion and also they kept the original opening but with Arabic lyrics which is still popular to this day among my generation (90s kids).
Personally I loved the anime nevertheless and I became a huge fan, despite the animation limitations it had in comparaison to other works at the time and despite the censorship because the core message it self of it spoke directly the child me at that time and it moved me emotionally and made me realise a lot of the world's realities and atrocities' at that age through the protagonists trials and journey and it also taught me a lot about friendship, companionship, loyalty and values.
Later on I managed to make my younger siblings fans of the first three seasons of this show. I'm glad I lived through an era where this show was still ambitious in terms of the message and the quality it tried to achieve.
I'm gonna have to go with the dub on this one. Gattomon sounds better than Tailmon. Like, why is she called Tailmon in the first place? Because she has a tail? Well, Gatto at least means "cat" so it makes a bit more sense to me.
Or LordKnightmon becoming Crusadermon. That sounds waaaay cooler, and fits with the Royal Knights theme a bit more. Calling him LordKnightmon just sounds like he's supposed to be a souped up Knightmon, which we all know he isn't. I also like how they actually spell out Veemon in the dub instead of being Vmon. It just looks better.
Not to mention names like Kentaurosmon, which sounds far more intimidating than Sleipmon, and Beelzemon, which flows better than Beelzbumon (that weird "bu" in the middle throws the flow off), or Puppetmon instead of Pinnochimon (I get what they were going for, but what a strange reference)
I'll admit, some aren't winners (Lilithmon to Laylamon) but it's also worth noting that these usually only happen in the shows, rather than the videogames. Lilithmon is still Lilithmon in Cyber Sleuth, for example.
I saw the dubs first and something never felt right. Never was that into digimon but I recently watched the original adventure and I agree that the name changes are pointless. If you look at Naruto's dub for example, non of the character names are changed. Techniques are renamed to be less literal than in Japanese and less of a mouthful, "Storm Release: Encouraging Crushing Chain Tormenting Principle" becomes "gale style:laser circus".
Also I think the reason the English games/anime dub use rookie instead of child is to make the Digimon seem older, the Digimon in the anime also mainly had adult voices so I think they intentionally wanted them aged up. I'm guessing having purely children fighting alongside and against other children was too much for the Executives.
I used to hate “Omegamon” and I definitely preferred “Omnimon” but after Alphamon was created, “Omegamon” became my favorite.
Even when I was a kid and didn't know Spanish, I already knew Gato meant cat somehow just simply how it sounds closer to the word. Gatomon just sounds cuter and relates to her being a cat. Tailmon is a bit obvious and it's like sure it can relate to cats but a lot of animals also have tails. Kids are a lot smarter than given credit and I don't see the problem with learning another language, as you said. Plus if the original uses English and Latin translations for names, that kinda defeats the purpose of learning new languages. By changing the Digimon names in the English dub, kids actually got to understand different languages. It's possible the American dub changed names to make certain names not be so obvious to English speaking viewers. I mean they kept names like Renamon which is fox in French "Renard". If she was called 'Foxmon' in the original, the English dub would probably change it to make it sound better and be less obvious.
The name for Omnimon from Omegamon probably was change to get rid of its tie in religion regarding the end of the world. Things relating to religion was a big no in America and parents might complain thus the show can be cancelled.
As for the changes to the levels, since Digimon are seen as monsters/creatures not humans, maybe they thought some kids would find it either more confusing or be uncool. They do things like this to make sure it sells well otherwise it can backfire on them. It's stupid and sometimes makes no sense but it helps get people introduced to it.
Digimon has so many religious references. There are tons of angel and demon Digimon, the Seven Demon Lords, etc. Religious people really need to stop being offended by everything, although I'm sure some of it is also Bandai just being stupid and assuming people will be offended when in reality they won't be.

I proper loved Digimon when I was a child! 😃 It was dubbed in English, then I lost interest! :( Until over 20 years later, after meeting one of my many online Dutch friends on Instagram, he tagged me in his Digimon posts, reminding me of my childhood and that’s what got me back into the series and appreciate it even more! 😃
When I was a kid, I watched all the episodes from season 1, most of them from season 2 and only some of season 3! Then I was obviously that they had seasons 4 and onwards! Then I proper enjoyed my retrospectieve watching the boxset from seasons 1 to 4 I bought.
Something folks forget is this is a cartoon for kids (Kodomo anime means that) since anime is used by all the cartoon in all the world.
So, it is pretty cool to have a multilanguage idea so kids of all the world can understand.
I speak perfectly spanish and italian so I know Gato or Gatto (Italian) means cat, but the name is meh to me, Tailmon is better i mean lol is obviously a cat, so not a necessary name.
Totally agree with your points. I grew up with dub but prefers sub later on as I get older. My personal opinion is when anything is translated to other languages, they should maintain the original meaning by directly translate it so that people could learn the differences of the culture and such...
My first experience with Digimon was the dub, but I prefer the sub for all of the reasons that you have detailed in this video.
US fans definitely missed out on a ton of greatness due to the english dub we got growing up. We never experienced the amazing original soundtrack and theme-song, Butter-fly; we missed out on the significant storytelling via the digimon names; and we even got out of place story beats and strange dialogue because the translations were wacky and thought the story needed to be dumbed down. I'm still grateful to have been able to have digimon as part of my childhood, but after learning of how much we missed out on makes me sad. I'm glad the dubs nowadays have gotten way better
I hate when localization team trying to put their own "creative" twist when localizing shows or games.
It completely ruin the original meaning and intention of the creator.

I grew up with the English American dub. Though nowadays I watch both dubbed and subbed, then I just use the names from both that I'm most comfortable with, which results in a mix of both. Most of time when commenting I use both names like this: English Dub/Japanese Dub with English subtitles. If the difference between the two names is just like: Wizardmon and Wizarmon, than I'm just going to use Wizardmon.

I totally agree with you! Once I saw the original names, I discarded the American names. They made no scene. When Digimon X came out I found out their true names which I saw need no changes. The dub I saw fortunately had the original theme songs and not the Digirap... I am sorry for all of those who like the digi rap, but it sucks in comparison to the original songs. The American names takes away all the hidden meanings this series bring to the table. So I´ll stick to the Original Japanese names!
Good for you, but it still makes it difficult for people who grew up with the dub to understand who or what you are referring to. Communication between one human being to another is very important since the dawn of time, and if you try to discard that based on either pride, snide or just disdain for localisation, then you fail at communicating. I speculate that a large majority of people have grown up with the dub and would prefer to communicate about Digimon via their dub incarnations.
It’s also a sign of respect. You respect the wishes of the other person, even if at heart you don’t agree with it. That’s what this community needs. Respectful communication
@@ulfberht4431 completely agree, and also why would the company want you to use random JP terms/names if they specifically approved the dub? Not only did they approve it, they constantly use the terms and names across series and video games. So really it just looks like a situation where a bunch of weeabos are trying to scoff at those people who grew accustomed to dub words.
I agree with you completely, even though from the map shown my country was represented as one to show the subbed versions in majority of cases, it's actually not like that situ is more of a 50/50 between sub and dub

I grow up with the german version (because I'm from Germany) and we also call it Gatomon. I learned early that Gato means cat in Spain, because my mother speaks spain.
On the other side, I prefer the name Omegamon instead of Omnimon.
Whats also kind of weird is that in Digimon Data Squad we in Germany said Sleipmon but in Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth and Hackers Memory we said Centarumon.
Then we got the North American/English translation of the game and all the dub names were used.

The weirdest thing about dubed version is how childish it is. For example the first time Angemon shows up the dialogue is all about him sacrificing himself while dub is something like "Cool hair" and "Don't worry I'll be back".

Also, in my case, Digimon was amongst the Shows that introduced me to Anime, as well as eventually becoming the one that introduced me the differences between Sub and Dub, which eventually lead me into becoming a Sub Fan.
I grew up with the US English dub. Something seemed off about it. I prefer the Japanese names over the US English ones. If I had to rewatch any season/series of Digimon, I prefer the subbed version. Only if they released the subbed version as a box set here in the US. The dub annoys me.

I first watched Digimon in Dutch dubbing (i'm romanian). The evolution stages were: Rookie, Champion, Ultra, Mega. There were 2 others before rookie..but I never memoriesed them.

In my country we have dubbed anime and they used the English names for Digimon, but we didn't have the censorship. Growing up I got used to the dub names but as a teenager I was able to watch it again in Japanese and now I much prefered the original version. Like you said, the original names carry a meaning and they're lost most of the times. There are other strange changes like Beelzemon for Beelzebumon, like... it's the same name just shorter, why change it?
Anyway I don't blame people for using English names or terminology if that's what they're used to, but if they're big fans they should at least be aware of the original names, it's good for them too so that they learn more about the original concepts.

This video is about dub terminology, but it's also worth noting that the American dubs of Digimon Adventure, 02, and Fusion remove character development and depth usually just for the sake of jokes, often ruins the thoughtful tone and atmosphere of any quiet scenes with constant talking or narration, and feels like a completely different show at many points.

As a French Canadian, I can speak from experience that dubbing sucks in general. The worst part is that English speakers in North America will often criticize French or Spanish dubs and western TV shows and movies for being shitty (which they are), but then turn around and praise English dubs of Japanese Anime and movies and will make fun of people who watch them subbed, what a bunch of hypocrites!
While I watched the first 3 seasons of Digimon in English, I started watching them in subs for season 4 and onwards as well as rewatching the original 3 in subs as well. I find it really shitty that we still haven't gotten the uncut DVDs with Japanese VA of all the seasons! WTF is Shout! Factory waiting for?

To me, the only real argument for sub over dub is that the Japanese music is absolutely incredible. Aside from that, I find the dub to generally be more entertaining and that's basically all I care about.
The termonology choices are the least of the issues in the American dub of Digimon Adventure, 02, Fusion.
I take much bigger issue with the character assassination usually for the sake of jokes, ruining any thoughtful atmospheric scene with constant talking and narration, and removing character development and depth.
as I remember when I am still kids, the English version of Level Kyukyoku (Ultimate) is not just "Mega", but is "Mega-Ultimate", I don't know why Digimon fans of modern days now saying that level as only a mere "Mega" instead of "Mega-Ultimate"?

I will share my memories about Digimons! I lived in Serbia, and there back on a day was not The best situation in general so they discontinued playing digimons on tv, but they also never Said The simple name of any form like rookie, champion, ect…
Ah yes, because going from Ultimate to Mega makes so much less sense than going from PERFECT to Ultimate. Neither of those naming conventions for the last 2 stages of Digivolution make any sense so complaining about the English vs the Japanese term (beyond the Japanese suggesting emotional growth as well) is pretty much a moot point. If something is Perfect it's the best it can be, there is literally no improving on perfection so to go from Perfect to Ultimate actually even less sense than the English if anything.
As for everything else I can appreciate both the sub and dub versions for different reasons. I know a lot of stuff gets lost in translation, but if the stuff that is lost wouldn't make sense to a particular audience then what's the point in it being there? If people end up watching the sub later and are interested to learn about that stuff they will go and do so it's entirely their prerogative.

I watch it dub. Spanish Latin Dub. In this dub the sountrack was the japanese version, but the names and terminology a mix betwen english and japanese, and it was changed betwen seasons. Examples: we used Qinglongmon and Azulongmon (02 or Tamers), the evolution terms like you said: Child, Adult, Perfect, Ultimate were use in Adventure but a little changed: Crecimiento (Growth), Adulto (Adult), Perfeccionado (Perfect in participle verb) and Mega. In later season this was changed into english versions: Novato (Rookie), Campeón (Champion), Ultra (Ultimate), Mega. The character names were also changed: Taichi = Tai. Yamato = Matt. Daisuke = Davis. Ruki = Rika.

I agree with you 100% Italian dub had the original music and also didn't censor much but the name were changed. As an adult i prefer all Japanese term and names it also help thati speak Japanese fluently. When i play the Digimon TGC and use the original names people look at me funny sometime but whatever :P
I saw Digimon in Hindi version for the very first time in 2003 and it used all orignal japanese names and music of Children and Digimon. I also saw English and Orignal Japanese version. I consider Japanese version with English subtitles best to watch because Japanese version has best sound, dialogues and music

In Brazil the dubbed version uses most of the Japanese names. But there is a mix for some Digimon like Miotysmon (Vamdemon) and the Crests mentioned in the video.
I grew up with the English Dub and it was one of my favorites and it still is to this day.
Im lucky that the Filipino-English dub of Digimon followed the original names, same story, and kept some of the scenes that were removed in the US version. After a decade I got to watch the US dub of Digimon Adventure and was surprised by the corny jokes, bad confusing dubs, and cut scenes.
I'm using both. In my country we have only first Adventure officially dubbed. But we have two versions. One based on english version and one based on japanese version. But version with japanese names is only with one voice actor and orginal voices in back. Yes, I'm know this can be weird but it work!
So i played an old digimon game on the ps2 a long time a go and it got me really excited but me and my older brother decided to have a team. He had one side and i had the other. Even though he wouldn't let me use a member from hid team i still kept playing with mine. Months later i learned about the anime when i saw the VHS in my uncles truck but when i put it in my VHS player i learned it was the behind the scenes footage of star wars. I think a month later the first 2 parts of digimon adventure was put on netflix. I was so excited but didn't realize the second part so after i finished season 1 i cried... a lot but learned about season 2 and stopped crying. A year later season three was on netflix... i watched it all in a month. Years later i was in 7th grade so middle school. Middle school was kicking my butt and when i started to rewatch digimon i found out digimon was going to be removed. (If you must be wondering how i felt imagine you wake up and are hungry. You go to the kitchen to get some your favorite cereal when you find out your brother is eating the last of it. You want to beat him up but your parents are home so you leave him be and forget about it.) Now that i use hulu i got the chance to watch part one but stopped in the middle of part two because i found out not all of the episodes are on it.
Yeah, I first experienced the dub growing from seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4. Then, when I went to five and six, I appreciated the sub more. When it comes to the sub for me, I understand the original dialogue, the soundtrack, and the voice acting is a lot better, in my personal opinion

Still, saw many of those same seasons with jp dub as those episodes were uncensored+better quality years later. So I'm fine with the jp terminology used in every video, as I'm quite familiar with them by now.

I'm British and I grew up watching old Godzilla films late night on Channel 4, often subbed, so reading subtitles has become second nature to me, meaning it doesn't matter what language it's in, if it has English subtitles, I'm fine! Plus I learn a new language (sort of) along the way! As such, I have a bit of Japanese, but did French GCSEs for five years, so I speak English UK with a West Yorkshire dialect, extremely rusty at French (I left school in 2000!), a spot of Spanish, I know how to pronounce words from a couple of other European languages (French, German, Spanish, Italian) as well as Japanese, but that's about where my linguistic skills run dry, I'm afraid! Who says Brits don't embrace other cultures?
Digimon was a VERY rare beast for me: It was something I watched from the FIRST episode! I can only think of one or two others where that happened outside of mine and my mate's Animé and DVD libraries! I've kept with Digimon as I actually prefer it to Pokémon, the obvious comparisson, I know! Plus, I really hate Pokémon's current English dub by DuArt! I can only think of minor bugbears with Digimon's dub choices, though, while I have watched Tamers so, I kind of want to watch the rest in Japanese as well, mostly jus to see it, while with Pokémon it's purely so I don't have to put up with that Sovereigns awful Dub! By Ebonwumon's shell, it really is that bad!
