I laughed at this. My MSI laptop has thermal throttling issues. No vents are under the fan intakes on the bottom and the cooler boost compensates for this poor design. I first raised up the bottom off the desk to help, but it wasn't much better. I threw a bigger storage stick in and left the bottom off to test. Bottom of case off solved the problem. For a bit I left the screws out while it was at home and would pop the bottom off while it was in an A vertical on my desk and hooked up to monitor and dock. I plan to pick up a spare bottom and cut holes in it. It was so bad though I considered returning it. Only things that saves MSI is the advanced BIOS, they offered an all AMD Advantage configuration I wanted at a sale price.

    • @retrobulldozer8723
      @retrobulldozer8723 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

Unfortunately, this is true, the design is completely the same as Rog Ally and they also placed a slot for Micro Sd cards under the hole for heat removal. @officerminiwheats 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Looks cool, but I'm worried about all that extra ventilation on the back. A lot of surface area for dust, debris and moisture to enter. It shouldn't be an issue too much for home use, but on the go it could become an issue. I guess the advantage beyond thermals is that you could use it as a miniature space heater.

But it's so amazing seeing these increasingly powerful handhelds. Its amazing how much they are doing to make PC gaming more accessible and genuinely feel more free (as in being able to natively play favorite games anywhere). It's a joy I haven't felt since I got my first Gameboy.

In its current state, its lowest TDP setting is so high that you'll have low battery life even when playing very lightweight games. They also choose FHD screen resolution, meaning it will consume even more power. And on top of that - RGB led strips, which don't add functionality, but eat battery nonetheless. I don't see how this competes with other handhelds.

This might not be great for older titles using DX9 since it is powered by Intel Arc. I think you'll still be better off in most cases with an AMD chipset since they power the Xbox One, Xbox Series S & X, PS4, PS5, The Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, and Radeon graphics cards work with any game just like Nvidia. Point is Arc a bit experimental and temperamental so this could struggle more with older games & older APIs.

My thoughts on the cooler boost... If they have thunderbolt (which is a very intel thing) you can use an External GPU and then utilize the cooler boost to help stop it from thermal throttling while acting like a desktop. So it's less for mobile and more for the home experience. Bet their dock is going to try to take full advantage of those settings.

50% plus more! The battery life matters a lot in a handheld device! Also, when you hold it on hand for a couple of hours, I guess that ergonomic feel will help.

cooler boost for over clocking..... or if you want to play any game on the gs66 stealth.... love how thin and light it is and it has a lot of power (2070 max Q) but the thermals are not good. never had a game crash with it on but even dead cells will make the computer shut down. Edit: its also possible my unit is "defective" the fans will not turn onto "max" without hitting the cooler boost button. aside from that it has served me well for the last few years.

I have a steam deck and the Lenovo legion go its going to see how well the legion go compares to the steam deck and how well Windows holds compared other hand held I originally had the Logitech g cloud. I might just sell my steam deck because now I have full access to more than just Stan store I can natively play Xbox and other games via other stores

What were the devs thinking? Don't they Listen to customer requests after the current handheld experiences? Large border around the screen, hence screen could be bigger, no OLED, no touchpad...

This is exactly what I have been holding out for. I really dislike the colors they went for on the Ally's XYBA buttons so this fixes that plus comes in black. 🎉

I prefer the harder to push back buttons. I don't really like rear buttons though. On my Ally, I don't accidentally press them, and that is a good thing!

Curious to see how Intel handles compares to the AMD processors when it comes to these handhelds. And it shocks me that it can only go down to 15 watts. Having that higher draw will certainly drain the battery faster.

I hope it has fingerprint reader like Rog Ally
Not like Lenovo legion go don't have.
And it's windows is not buggy like Lenovo.
But we will see how far Intel's ARC graphic goes beyond Ryzen z1 extreme.

No dave, people are plying AAA titles at 15w on the ally not 2d games. You can play those under 10w on the ally. You can play AAA games at 10-12w on the deck. Putting an Intel chip on a handheld was dumb.

I don't mind the cool boost option. Over time these devices gather dust and gunk which may hinder cooling performance. I know it sounds disgusting, but that's just life.

Think the fans are for gamers who game many many hours, and then when maby when therr waiting for a new game, you can cool down the device alot if you put the turbo fans on.

I wonder if this one will have egpu support through thunder bolt 3/4 usbc 4??? If so maybe I need to return my ROG Ally? I love the ally over the legion go, but hate the fact it has a proprietary egpu connection and will never be able to use it with one, the scalper prices are way too high and ROG just simply doesn't care enough to manufacture enough xg mobile to keep them in stock for a good price. This claw would seem to give the consumer everything they want for gaming, if it performs as well as the ROG Ally. Performance and simplicity of use is why I'm willing to forgo the egpu set up with it versus the Legion go.
