He also has another Nocturne in C sharp minor which is truly heartbreaking Op. 27 No. 1. One of his most haunting works.

I bought a version of this Nocturne which was said to have been found in some trunk in the attic of somebody's house in the early part of the 20th Century. The beginning of the main melody had a bit more ornamentation and the first theme of the B Section that resembles the 3rd Movement of the F Minor Concerto was simplified by Chopin presumably for his sister who might have trouble with 2 against 3 timing. Other than that, the version that I bought is the same as the one presented here. By the way, the little mazurka-like tune just after the melodies of the B Section that resemble those found in the F Minor Concert sound, to my ear, like the melody from one of Chopin's Polish Songs: "The Maiden's Wish". Thanks for going over this piece. It is charming. I think it did not get publish in Chopin's lifetime because of the resemblance of its themes to his Concerto.

You need to find a background without so many "hard edges". The camera automatically focus on the sharp lines, and bypass your soft facial features.

@@bayareapianist Wladislaw Spielman wrote a book called Death of a City in which he recounts coming face to face with a German officer whilst he was in hiding because he was Jewish . He told the officer he was a pianist and played this piece , after which the good German helped him . In the film ''The Pianist '' which is based on the book they have him playing a Chopin Ballade instead . I guess Natalia Carp had a similar experience -I had never heard of her but will now google her.....

Very nice analysis! Something that is not very well known about this nocturne is that there is actually a second version of it based on Chopin's own autograph of the piece. The Henle score book of all of Chopin's nocturnes contains both of them and I personally prefer the autograph (version 20b). The most notable differences (at least for me) are that in the intro the first and second bass notes are C#s in the same octave (which gives a very light and "small sounding" introduction), the notation of the middle part (left hand in alla breve, right hand in 3/4, something I haven't seen anywhere else) as well as some different notes in the left hand during the main theme. If you - by chance - find this version somewhere, I would definitely recommend checking it out!

I really dislike how Henle doesn't give any fingering for that version though

When i learned it i did the cadenzas dividing the n° of notes that they had with the n° of notes on the left hand. This way you have an even distribution and its easier to match the notes in both hands (except when it is an odd number, then you have a group with one more note ofc).

The video is great! I love breakdowns of pieces I love, really nerdy stuff😆. However, when we have these world class Chopin interpreters, e.g. Birgitte Engerer or Maria Joao Pires, who have truly exquisite recordings of this very piece. Why do you opt for these sub-par recs, that sound like some not-so-serious high-school student?

  • @bayareapianist

I loved this piece so much when I was 12 years old that's I started translating every wards in its introduction page from English. I only had three pages of this piece. Introduction in English and page 1 and 2. For years I could only play two pages of this and I could not find it in any nocturnes books. I still have difficulties in page 3!

NO WAY. Im doing the final ajustments on this piece right now! What a perfect timing!
Personally, my biggest wall to overcome in this piece is actually the trills, not those rhytm differences. Never did trills before, and making them all sound effortless and match the piece's atmosphere is really a major challenge for me. I have the feeling i will definetly revisit this nocturne in the future when i get more confident on trills.

This piece is part if my RCM exam, it will be in April 2019 so a big thank you for this video and all the great previous videos as well. I was watching lately you video about the baroque dances and I wish if you gave us some tips and tricks to identify the different dances by reading the sheet and not only by listening to the excerpt. As you certainty know part of grade 9 RCM harmony exam is to identify the dances and determine a rythm but I couldn't find any online resources thar explains the differences between the dances by analyzing the sheets (rythm, upbeat, form...) some of the dances have the same time signature and rythm and I find it very tricky to make the difference between them. Thank you and keep up the amazing work.

Thanks for such a simple explanation. I have a question. Would be really nice if you could answer. Since, G# major used in the above piece is not a part of chord progression of the key C# minor, does this make it a non-diatonic chord?

The thing about this piece is it is quite easy to dissect, VERY easy to play for intermediates but among one of the hardest songs by Chopin that you can master. You don’t realize it but mastering the tempo along with right hand lag while also controlling several pitches in several fingers is very very hard. I’ve been learning and studying it for about a year now and still have trouble on the key changes.

  • @goodmoringful

I think i played this piece. Its a very sad piece. It switches from sad to happy to sad. Im not sure what the chord progression was. But its a great piece that will surely hit you once you finish it to the end.
