Have you not seen the washer trick when tracing around a template to add padding/boarder? Run a washer around the outside of your buck with your pen inside the washer. You’ll get an evenly spaced line following your template that’s the same distance.
I don't care for the sound of the tele neck pickup by itself ... but i do like the way the guitar sounds when the neck and bridge pickups are combined.
Awesome! Love the direction this is going! The TV Jones you mentioned gets my vote, lol! Ever thought about just scribing the outline of a pickguard on it, engraving? Quadruple points if you do paisley, lol! Looking great, James!
Engraving paisley! Oh my! If you ever saw my hand writing you would know immediately that engraving is not an option Lol! I do like the idea of scribing the pickguard outline. Thanks.
Really cool! I’m planning a telecaster build because I have heard they are easy to do, as you mentioned. I figure I can learn by making a tele and then branch out from there.
Absolutely make a Tele. They really are simple, especially with your skills, it will probably be too easy. Les Paul's on the other hand, much much harder but super fun.
Who needs a pickguard anyway? I mean...you could potentially put a center block of wood (or some other material) in there and mount the pickups to that. This could also resolve potential feedback issues caused by this essentailly being a hollow body (by turning it into a semi-hollow this way). If you're going for a pickguard, it should be made of metal (or at least look that way).
Beautiful work! Curious if you’ve ever used aluminum? It has such a bright sound, I imagine it sounding pretty right for a telecaster. Very light and rigid too, part of why it was used in so many of those wonderful early compression drivers for cinema horns etc.
Thanks Randy. Hey it's almost Wednesday. Any new candidates for your weird tool Wednesday series? I love those videos, you have stumped me on every single one of them so far.
I guess I should clarify. I use my tele neck pickups a lot I just don't use the lipstick version in them very often. Typically I run a P90 or humbucker. I'm starting to lean towards a TV Jones style pickup for this one but who knows.
Don't know if I'm correcting facts or just terminology, but the Fender Tele neck pickup isn't a lipstick pickup, it's just a regular single-coil with a nickle-silver cover. Lipstick pickups have a very different construction.
Great work as usual!, I think a chrome or silver colored Merle Haggard style pickguard might look good on this guitar, but I'm sure what ever you choose will be great! Look forward to the next video! Cheers.
Really looking forward to this and you mentioned something I have been thinking about a lot - How to do the neck pocket. I am currently making a hollow body guitar of my own design and was thinking of making a metal version when I’ve finished the current one. I have been thinking a lot how the hell do I do the neck pocket and get a good tight fit.
I am very happy to have found your project as I am just starting a PBass version myself and you have provided me with tons of good information. I was curious what your template is made out of and what thickness is your copper?
Thanks! My template is made from corian which is a counter-top material. It's easy to cut with wood working tools and sands beautifully and is very hard. I get scraps of it at a local store that cuts counter tops for people. The copper I used on this is .043" thick which I think is too thick. The resonators I build all use .032" thick material which would have been a much better choice for this guitar.
Great start. I am a telecaster fan myself. Thinking out loud here....is a metal Resonator Tele possible? Would the shape, scale length or ? be a pitfall? Looking forward to hearing what copper twang sounds like.
Already looks amazing James! I thought you were going to use that roller tool to turn the edge. Nothing so barbaric as banging it over with a hammer. 😁 Great to know you can shorten the turn a little on the rezos and great results without the notches. I'm looking forward to see what you will do for support in the neck pocket. Just finished a single pickup LPJ. Sounds killer, a rock and roll machine. Course it's a P-90.
I don't think it's needed for this application. The copper I bought was rated dead soft so even softer than 1/8 soft, it should already be annealed. The heat cycles a guitar goes through are very mild and it's only 20"x14" surface area so I don't expect much expansion and contraction over it's lifetime. I'm not at all concerned about cracking. But I've had several comments on this so starting to think I'm missing something. I'll mention it in part 2 and see what kind of input I get, which is scary because there are a lot of people who don't actually know that are willing to proclaim their brilliance and give input. Lol!
I have been thinking about doing the sides in a different material but haven't decided yet. I don't think annealing is necessary here. If it were going to crack it would have when i bent the edge over. Not at all worried about it. Thanks.
It's supposed to be rated as dead soft according to the paper cert hanging on the rack near it. I'm assuming it's already annealed and softer than 1/8 hard. That's if you trust the dirty wrinkled paper taped to the rack tho. It is really soft when you work it so there's that anyway.
Is the body stiff/strong enough? I would worry that if the material is easy to bend, it will get damaged easily or not support the loads that it needs to support @@Ninety2guits
As it sits in the video without the back soldered in, no it is not strong enough. I am currently working on the internal bracing and strengthening which goes in before the back goes on. Good eye on your part, it needs strengthening. Thanks.

Well... shoot. Yes I have seen that trick. If only you could have reminded me it would have saved me a 1/2 hour. Next time.
My apologies @@Ninety2guits :)
Awesome sauce!!! I can’t wait to see the finished guitar.
I think a single pickup esquire with no pickguard would look stunning. Great video, looking forward to the next one!
6:41. Really smart.
"We choose to this not because it is easy, but because we thought it would be easy."
Hahahaha! That's good!
years ago, I ended up tigging copper together, I used left over copper wire from wiring the house, when sanded, it had no seam
Years ago I borrowed a tig welder from you and made a gas tank for my Jeep. I'm still not a very good tig welder Lol!
This will be fun to watch, 👍👍
That was pretty interesting to watch James.
I'm feeling like I'm getting the sniffles too. Hope you feel better soon. Cheers mate.

Lol, I couldn't do it either!
I made a Strat out of 18 gauge brass about 15 years ago. That was a major pain in the ass, but it turned out real good.
I was just watching your video "some GT guitars". You've made a bunch of cool stuff! Very nice.
Really cool! I’m planning a telecaster build because I have heard they are easy to do, as you mentioned. I figure I can learn by making a tele and then branch out from there.

You are a legend for sharing this information! I was thinking of getting my cad drawing water jeted but I'm not sure the price will be worth it.
You can soften the edges with a blow lamp so they will bend very easily 😉

Nice copper. That seemed easy, but I think you are now very good with metal working.
Thanks Randy. Hey it's almost Wednesday. Any new candidates for your weird tool Wednesday series? I love those videos, you have stumped me on every single one of them so far.
The lipstick pickup would look pretty sweet against the copper. That gets my vote, even if you don't use it much.

Hi, Are you going to aged or fire painting the Copper ?
Can I ask why you don't anneal the copper for bending the edges?

Shouldn’t you have annealed the copper before bending it?
I’d incorporate, brass, aluminum/ silver. 3 colored metals in the build.

I hate Copper Cuts!! Watch your fingers!
Funny you mention that. I was being careful with the copper and then cut my finger deeply on a metal shelf... Aaarrrgghhh!
Sorry, I used to do some work with copper and brass. Both take a while to heal from a cut.@@Ninety2guits
