The reason '80s comedies worked is they had a funny script to start with, then let the funny actors within that movie add to it. The problem with Feig/Apatow is they have a decent idea but don't take the time to develop the script, instead going the route of "you're funny actors; make something up".
This was one of the better generic comedies from the time. The High Priest was the funniest character, and that’s the only performance I needed to be happy when Oliver’s in anything.
History of the World Part 1 will FOREVER be my favorite comedy. I was 10 years old when I saw it, me and my friends could recite it verbatim. At 41 i can still recite it verbatim.
Year One gets a pass for that " Well, there won't be any berries in the fruit salad now, so we all lose" line. I dont know why but for some reason me and my friends all died at that part. Dont even really remember if we laughed again but I remember we quoted the crap out of that line.
I may get raked over coals for this, but I consider the Judd Apatow era of comedy kinda overrated. I mean, I still like some of the movies from that era so it's not a total loss, but you hit on some of the reasons I got tired really quickly. There were a lot of redundant characters and they set an obnoxious precedent where everyone was sassy with rambly dialogue that felt like they didn't know how to pump the brakes on jokes. If I had a dollar for everyone who thought coming up with stuff extemporaneously automatically made it good, I'd be a wealthy man.
Totally over rated I agree. I had a couple friends raving about how he was a 'genius' and made the funniest films. *So I asked them to QUOTE ONE JOKE from one of his films.* They couldn't.
I agree, I think part of it is summed up the Kevin Smith quote in the video. A lot of people tried to emulate them, used the same cast, but ultimately came up with movies that weren't as good. Apatow himself included.
Hats Off Entertainment Have you ever seen or heard of that "Boris and Natasha" movie from 1992 ? That would be perfect for an episode of Forgotten Failures.
Oh GOD! While I want him to cover it, as I'm FAAAAAR too lazy to bother making a review channel to hack that one to ribbons and would love to see someone else do the heavy lifting, I simultaneously don't want him to be subject to that depressing sack of garbage. It's a crappy Naked Gun cash-in that's by far the WORST of the Jay Ward movies. Worse than Dudley Do-Right. And the sad thing is that it had some great SCTV talent behind it. But as a dyed in the wool Bullwinkle fan, I felt personally insulted by how freaking idiotic the film was. And how they deal with the live action version of Rocky and Bullwinkle in that film... shudder... you'd think Andrea Martin as Rocky would be fun, but it isn't. Not at ALL. I mean, the actual Rocky and Bullwinkle has problems, mainly with the pointless Mary Sue they shoved in, but at least there was a respect for the source material.
I recall seeing this movie while out of the country and getting a celebrity crush on Juno temple. I never get celebrity crushes. That's really all I remember
The only thing I remember about this movie was one of the strangest marketing attempts aimed at a niche audience; way back in the day, I used to frequent Gaia Online, which was an anime-themed forum website that had a focus on making custom avatars with cool accessories and whatnot. One day, when this movie was coming out, they sent users on the site an ad to try and get folks to get excited for this funny new movie, and they made a unique set of ancient armor that matched what characters would wear in the film. It was such a strange attempt to draw attention from a userbase largely made of teens who liked anime, but at least the ad provided a plain-looking sword to contrast a lot of the over-designed weapons the site was littered with, which is honestly why I remember it at all.
I think part of its failure is that this current generation just doesn't connect with biblical stuff the way boomers and older generations did. Back then everyone went to church at some point and understood references made in movies. It's just not like that anymore.

RIP Harold Ramis. A true legend.
One of my favorite movies of all time, I don't know why it got such a low score in rotten tomatoes
This is a win for me. There’s a lack of seriousness but it’s what it should be. A bunch of actors having a great time and making a funny movie.
Year One gets a pass for that " Well, there won't be any berries in the fruit salad now, so we all lose" line. I dont know why but for some reason me and my friends all died at that part. Dont even really remember if we laughed again but I remember we quoted the crap out of that line.
7:24 Groundhogs Day sounds like a title for a hypothetical Groundhog Day sequel...
It's just a remaster of Groundhog Day released to theaters.
@@SeekerGoldstone genius! 😂
I’ll prefer to think that high fidelity, where Harold Ramis plays John Cusack’s father is his last role.
There’s also his cameo in Knocked Up
Or even his role in Orange County.
*So I asked them to QUOTE ONE JOKE from one of his films.*
They couldn't.
I agree, I think part of it is summed up the Kevin Smith quote in the video. A lot of people tried to emulate them, used the same cast, but ultimately came up with movies that weren't as good. Apatow himself included.
I agree 2 or three of them were really funny and the rest were just formulaic. I actually like this film better than most of his.
You might've gotten raked over the coals 10 years ago, but in hindsight, Apatow was totally overrated.
This movie grew on me after a couple viewing and actually is in my rotation of silly movies I like to fall asleep to.
Lol what a compliment
I watch it every year tbh
Hats Off Entertainment Have you ever seen or heard of that "Boris and Natasha" movie from 1992 ? That would be perfect for an episode of Forgotten Failures.
Yes it would.
Rocky and Bullwinkle vibes!
An underrated classic!
Year One started off promising, and then it ran out of ideas.
I love this movie and quote it often. Sooo many great scenes. Never understood why it was panned.
I watched Year One before I was aware of the concept of movies being failures. All I know is that I loved it a lot.
Love this movie!! Could watch it over and over without getting bored of it.
This and Your Highness blend together for me.
I watched this a week ago on Netflix with a few beers, wasn't great but I chuckled a few times
I still love this movie. I can watch it any time.
Come on. "I'm peeing on my face too. On the inside. " There are a bunch of great lines.
People like you are why comedy is dead.
@@AnAverageGoblin comedy is dead cause they don’t make movies like this anymore old man
@@AnAverageGoblin comedy is dead?
@@AnAverageGoblin Comedy is subjective, just because it doesn't meet your tastes doesn't mean it's dead
If you want a historical buddy comedy parody, Almost Heroes with Chris Farley and Matthew Perry is a good time
Me and my grandpa nearly died of laughing at the eagle scene when I was a kid. Great movie in my book.
Underrated gem
Very underrated comedy, not the greatest, but surprising how well Chris Farley and Matthew Perry worked off each other.
Great fun time
No 😐
Brooks stuff is just brill, the History of the World didn’t need a modern version.
I literally couldn't stop myself laughing out loud at the "15 commandments" bit.
Exactly.
I remember that I was on a church mission trip and we had a free day to see a movie and this is what we saw. I'm sure they regretted that later on.
This is definitely a movie I watch whenever I see it’s on a streaming service.
This is one of the best movies of all time
'Dinner for Schmucks' is genuinely funny and heartfelt. I hope you've had the chance to watch it before, Joe.
Being a remake helps with basic story
It really is.
I definitely like Dinner with Schmucks. I mean i see why it wasn't popular but i still like it
@@Burner-B It absolutely does. You're right.
I think part of its failure is that this current generation just doesn't connect with biblical stuff the way boomers and older generations did. Back then everyone went to church at some point and understood references made in movies. It's just not like that anymore.
Harold Ramis did this? Oyyy, sucks this had to be his last one.
This film looks like a Tropic Thunder trailer come to life.
Sadly this was legendary helmer Harold Ramis' final picture before his death in 2014 what an amazing human being he was !
