Excellent review and everything you said applies in 2020. I recently purchased this lens from eBay and I'm finding it very sharp with my 6D and my very demanding 5Ds. Another point that needs to be mentioned is the price, this is the cheapest L wide angle zoom made by Canon.

Thanks for your comment. It says a lot that it still looks sharp on a 5DS! I have hardly used mine since moving to EOS M, but I recently bought a Viltrox speed booster that will make this lens more usable on APS- C.

@@PhilUKNet how're you liking it with the speedbooster Phil?

@@Linteria To be honest, this has been a crazy year and I haven't had much of a chance to get out and take photos. This is the one lens that benefits most from the speed booster. It's nice to get some width back, there's an extra stop of speed and no noticeable difference with IQ.

@@PhilUKNet that sounds awesome. My issue with the speed booster is softness with my 50 1.8 STM. Only affects stills, but I mostly shoot stills. On better glass I’d imagine the IQ holds up a lot better. Also, I hear the overpriced metabones is so expensive because the focal reducer is better. I might check that out in the future.
      Love your content man.

Have you tried the new RF mount cameras? They're ridiculously light and way better than EOS M. Bigger true, but you can't put any of these cameras in your pants pocket now, can you? For instance, the EOS R6 with the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is sooo light. I was shocked by how light. Anyway, just thought I'd say that when you mentioned not wanting bulky cameras anymore. The RF 24-105 STM is also lightweight. The RF 24-240mm definitely falls into the bulky category but for a 200mm + focal length not that heavy TBH. I feel like it's splitting hairs to keep EOS M around at all but apparently, they like it in Asia quite a lot. I think the R6 and this lens would be a nice match since it is only 20MP.

I haven't - yet - but I am interested. You raise an excellent point and it's something I've been thinking about lately. It does seem now as if Canon won't be doing any more development on EOS M, thus the line is effectively dead. Since getting married, having kids, buying another house, etc, my finances haven't really allowed much of an investment in camera gear, but I did notice that the EOS RP body isn't a lot more than I paid for my EOS M6. The R5 and R6 are out of my budget at the moment. With an adaptor I could use my EF and EF-S lenses and buy some RF lenses later when my finances improve. Considering the EOS R bodies are all full frame, the prices seem very reasonable. Thanks for your thoughts. Your comment came just as I was thinking about which direction I should go. I will probably end up going the way of EOS R / RF.

I'm upgrading from my 1300d with kit lens and planning to get a 6d, 50mm 1.8, and this. Is that a great combination?

I have no experience of the 6D, but it's full frame and gets good reviews. Likewise, I don't have a 50 f/1.8 but it is a decent lens, fast and cheap. On a full frame camera the 17-40 will give you a useful wide angle lens. It's not perfect, but it delivers decent results and I think it's the cheapest L lens that Canon makes. It's up to you of course, but in your situation I would consider upgrading to EOS R and RF lenses. DSLR's and EF lenses are finished.

@@PhilUKNet I agree with EOS R and RF being the best but I am broke and cannot afford it. This setup costs around $1,000 from where I’m from and the EOS R’s costs around $2,000 just for the body. Thanks for the insight!

@@janwackkk I haven't been following the industry lately, but I thought there were now some budget R bodies and RF lenses. I've been using EOS M and EF-M for about 7 years. I still have some EF lenses, but I certainly won't be buying any more. Canon are clearly putting all their R&D into R and RF. It may be more expensive now, but I think it will be a better long term investment. In addition I have read that lens designers can do things with the RF mount that were physically impossible with EF. From what I can make out, the new RF lenses have great optics. Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do!
