    I concur, professional dog trainer/behaviorist for over 40 yrs. Most people don’t know their dogs. Peeps use dog parks to socialize. If dogs don’t know each other there’s a natural decision to be made between dogs when they meet. If communication goes well, play might be able to continue. Might! Socialize dogs at AKC training centers. It’s much safer. They check vaccinations too.

    My dog has Liver Disease, diagnosed early last year. I was devastated and I’m feeling like a terrible dog parent being that we went to the dog park quite often due to my dog being so social. My dog could’ve also acquired it some other way. Who knows, but I’m sure there are things that dogs can catch at Dog Parks!

      That makes me happy to hear. Just keep your head on a swivel. We had a client going to the same dog park for years and never a bad experience. One day a dog showed up that put her dog in the hospital in a matter of about twenty seconds. Multiple punctures and lacerations. That dog should have never been there. Unfortunately, things can go South in a hurry, and typically things at the dog park go great... until that one time they don't. We've seen some successful dog parks that operate with a team of volunteers that work there and help to screen any new dogs for problems. They also help to keep the owners more involved so that things aren't happening when no one is watching. If this is taking place we don't see nearly as many issues. Again, I want to love dog parks, but when I have twenty or thirty new clients per year that are coming to me because their dog got injured at a dog park I just can't in good conscious support the average dog park.

      @@TopDogProfessionalTraining Yes, That's what we do. We always have a committee member there (almost always) cleaning up, reminding people to clean up and not afraid of telling people ( nicely) your dog shouldn't be here. If there's an owner issue, we would cal the PD. But that's never happened. We also use it for training and education inviting in trainers and other dog related people. We've had a number of PD K9 demonstrations and have a bench dedicated to one of our past K9's. Folks have been wonderful purchasing our merchandise for sale. We keep the park running all on donations. But I do understand your point, there are some skirmishes now and then. we also treat the park with diatomaceous earth regularly for flea and tick control. We also have bird houses and bat houses for natural insect control.

      1) So a chance of injury makes not having fun in public a problem? Maybe just take reasonable precautions. But you can't guarantee problems never occur. It would suck to go through life refusing to ever have fun outside of a closely curated experience. That sounds like a miserable life, if one applies that to every part of their life. A kid could fall off a playset at a park and snap their neck. It doesn't mean most parents would refuse to take them to a playground unless they are in a bubble costume with someone holding their hand every step of the way.
      I've been going to dog parks for 10 years. For 5 of those years, I went at least 5 days a week. I can count on my hands how many fights I've seen. No, I am not counting a short barking match or argument. In all of those fights, the dogs did not make contact, but were doing the aggressive posturing and snapping with no contact. One of those fights was bad because a 100 pound lady owned a 120+ pound St Bernard and another huge breed that I didn't recognize. Her dogs were the primary fighters, but they ran in barking and making the situation worse. And I had to wheel barrow them back out of the fight because their owner was passively shout-whispering "No, don't do that" and didn't control her dogs.
      So yes, I realize bad things can happen. And if those two dogs were more aggressive, and there was nothing but a bunch of 100 pound ladies around, then a dog could die. But that isn't rationale for sheltering away from all danger forever. You could be just as likely to die in a car accident too. But you have to live life to the fullest.
      2) Dog parks aren't curated and can be a breeding ground for diseases. Sounds IDENTICAL to a playground. There is no one there to check your child's vaccination records. Yeah, kids don't sniff butts or junk, but kids get dirty, and they get a ton of viruses and bacteria from the dirt. Anthrax is a surprisingly common thing in the dirt. MRSA. Tetanus. HPV etc. Why is it a scary thing for a dog to potentially be exposed, but not a kid? Or would you apply the same logic to your child, and keep them sheltered their whole life?
      - From a technical/on-paper perspective, your argument is correct. It's impossible to argue that these things can't happen. But from a rational perspective, we all take risks in life. Some aren't worth it. Some are high risk low reward. Going to a dog park and letting your dog have fun instead of sitting inside all day (or travelling hours to some curated hand-holding dog park) is going to lead to many less full and happy lives out there. Public dog parks are low risk, high reward. Especially if you are a competent dog owner who is prepared to break up a fight in the rare case that it happens.

    I live in an affluent area with a really nice dog park. I have been walking past this thing every night for 7 plus years. Watching both Humans and Dogs. At first I though it was cool but after seeing fights between both dogs and humans with both of the groups (Small dogs and large dogs are divided among 3 fields). I wouldn't want anything to do with either. Small dog owners are like their dogs yippie and chatty and overly protective. Large dog owners are slow, uninterested and honestly lazy. There are always exceptions in both groups but I don't see those people hanging around much after awhile. Honestly I get more upset at the owners than the dogs and don't want anything to do with either group... Makes me want to get a Cat... almost.

      Ya dog parks are like the mad max thunderdome of the dog world. It's not a giant leap to imagine what type of parents most of those owners make. Ahem, absent ones. Doesn't matter how many dogs are maimed or die (ya that's happened) or people hurt, stupid wins for some reason with these parks. You know 90% of them let their dog off leash in non off leash areas too which is super arrogant. Narcissists mostly, probably why they like socializing with each other? No idea. Can't make sense of dumb.

    You know what's even worse, totally illegal and done all the time? People treating big open areas or public non-dog on-leash parks like they are off-leash. These people I swear they must be the most inconsiderate narcissists. There must be a serious dopamine kick when they see their dogs running around free or something going on. They just don't care that some dogs are threatened by their dogs running around off-leash. Or maybe some individuals are afraid of dogs. Perhaps some dogs are trained with good recall but most are not, and it's illegal anyway there's no 100% promise from your dog it will always obey you. Accidents of coarse happen. A lady just broke her ankle at one park near me, that sucks to heal and she's also older. Until by-law or whatever gets serious about it, it will continue to be like this and injuries and avoidable traumas will be the cost. Dog parks by their nature perpetuate this mentality. I simply don't understand why local government hasn't done more about these problems. Nobody would pen up a bunch of kids unsupervised and let them do whatever they want and they don't even have sharp teeth and typically can't out run you if they misbehave. It's bonkers.

    I believe we got really lucky at our dog park. The only thing we've had is a little weirdness with other dogs on the walks but that's tapered off since we've stopped taking him. He just... hasn't been interested when we go. If we're lucky he might get one or two other dogs to chase him but that's about it. He's gotten a lot more picky with who he plays with and they play on HIS terms, Chase (him) followed by boxing. That's all he wants.
    As soon as we get a house with a yard, I'm getting him a sister who also loves to chase and box.

    • @humanonearth1
      @humanonearth1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He doesn't like the dog park. Most dogs don't. It's completely uncontrolled. Seeing them play and pant doesn't mean they like it. Dogs are complex, they might even tug toward it b/c of the smells there but dog parks are just dumb accidents waiting to happen. It's not natural for dogs, it's just theater for owners and people too lazy to give them any other form of exercise or attention. Which is to say, people who shouldn't have dogs to begin with. Which obviously compounds the entire problem.

    My two husky mixes are usually very good. They are my service dogs but my husband does not keep up with the command, When the boys, (my two dogs, they're brothers) will see other dogs before us, they'll pull and I have to let go, because I am disabled and will sound like their aggressive and if the other dogs retaliate, mine will get aggressive. Now if I am with them and will see, I'll tell them to leave it and it takes time sometimes, but they will leave it. What is your best advice to give me for when they see other dogs before me . As my care taker was getting them out of the vehicle, she did not see people walking their dogs toward her but the boys did or smelled them. Jumped out and pulled her that she fell onto stones and sidewalk and got scraped up. A good Samaritan guy pulled them back and gave them to me. What is the best way to handle this because it is a variable meaning you never know when they'll see other dogs. Do hope that you can give me good advice to stop this. And I totally agree with you about dog parks, that is why I stopped taking them to the dog park, therefore I was thinking that it was that they were not acclimated to other dogs.

    I do walk my Dog with brief interaction. I only allow him to socialise with Dogs I know. Dogs are vibrational beings, they feed off other canines. Socialization are overrated. The first three to four months is pack association with handler and immediate family. We overstimulate them, and what a daunting task to meet other big unruly characters. The puppy must first bond naturally and maturedly with owner, that is socialization; then the next process at 4 months, start gradually with Dogs that are mature and wise.
